Kiszla: Avalanche needs coach Jared Bednar to be more than Ken ... (The Denver Post)

Is his job as coach of the Avalanche nothing more than to look as handsome as Ken doll on the team bench? Or should Jared Bednar be held responsible for ...

Maybe it’s time for Bednar to take Logan O’Connor or Alex Newhook off the healthy scratch list and put them in the lineup. Yes, it’s early in the series. “Years past, we might dwell on it and get down on ourselves and each other,” said MacKinnon, admirably level-headed in refusing to point a finger of blame after the loss. When the going gets tough, where does this team’s killer instinct go to hide? From the jump of Game 2, Colorado had none. Or should Jared Bednar be held responsible for Colorado being asleep at the wheel?

Colorado Avalanche Player Grades, Game 2 (Colorado Hockey Now)

Bowen Byram: B – Played smart again tonight. Incredible sliding saving to make up for coughing up the puck in his own zone. Erik Johnson: C – He was involved ...

Andre Burakovsky : D – His passing was off tonight like the rest of the team. It’s hard to blame this game on him, but Binnington is certainly winning the goalie duel right now. Mikko Rantanen : C – Big games need their big players. Artturi Lehkonen: C – Crazy he didn’t record a shot. Led the team with five shots but that was really it from the star defensemen. Not much for the other lines.

"We did a good job, and we forechecked hard tonight," St. Louis coach Crag Berube said after the game, via NHL.com. "We put pucks to good areas and were on it. When the puck turned over or they get their possession, we reloaded well, and I thought that we did a good job coming back in our own zone, protecting the middle ice, and our 'D' did a [heck] of a job of defending the rush, defending in our zone. David Perron put the Blues up 2-0 on a power play and later 3-1 in the third period. St. Louis broke through in the second period with a Jordan Kyrou goal 5:45 in. St. Louis would add two goals later in the period to put Colorado away. "We played a connected hockey game," Binnington said.

3 Takeaways From Blues' 4-1 Win over Avalanche in Game 2 (The Hockey Writers)

The St. Louis Blues bounced back in Game 2 against the Colorado Avalanche, posting a 4-1 win on the road to tie the series.

I started with FanSided as a Baseball Contributor. Now I am writing about the NHL and the St. Louis Blues for The Hockey Writers. I grew up in Central Illinois as a huge fan of every sport. They must withstand the inevitable push in Game 3 from them, as it will be a fast and furious start. He’s completely changed the trajectory of this playoff run for the Blues, as I’m convinced that they would not be in this position with Ville Husso in net. He also trusts his team to bounce back and make their own adjustments, and a veteran team like this did so in Game 2. The Blues needed to prove that this wasn’t the same team from 2020-21 that got swept by the Avalanche, and they did so. They can’t get into a track meet with this Avalanche team, as they already lost a game while allowing that to happen in Game 1.

"We got outworked and outskated," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said.

3 Takeaways from the Avalanche's Loss to the Blues in Game 2 (The Hockey Writers)

The Colorado Avalanche and the St. Louis Blues locked horns again at Ball Arena in Denver Thursday night in Game 2 of their second-round Stanley Cup Playoff ...

Author of five novels for young adults, including The Scar Boys, Life in a Fishbowl, and Hard Wired. Lives in Littleton, Colorado with two middle school-age kids, one awesome wife, and three pets. Otherwise, Kuemper made a series of impressive saves early to keep his team in the game. In the regular season, he had a 7-8-0 record with a .895 SV% and a 3.27 GAA. In the postseason, Binnington is now 1-6-0 versus Colorado, with a .924 SV% and a 2.85 GAA. Jordan Binnington turned in another strong performance in Game 2, stopping 30 of the 31 shots. After being outshot and outplayed by the Avalanche in Game 1, the Blues came out with a ferocious intensity, playing a physical, smart brand of hockey to defeat the Avalanche, 4-1. In Games 2 through 6, MacKinnon had zero goals and two assists, and Makar had zero goals and three assists. His career numbers against the Avalanche are lackluster at best. Blues forward David Perron, playing in his 100th playoff game, had two goals in the contest. After the Avalanche outlasted a 51-save performance from Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington to secure an overtime win in Game 1, they took to the ice looking to take a commanding 2-0 series lead. Mikko Rantanen, Colorado’s leading scorer during the regular season with 92 points, has yet to tally a goal in these playoffs. The 33-year-old veteran’s career numbers against the Avalanche are gaudy. In 39 games, Perron has 34 points.

With his second goal of the series, Kyrou joins the list of Blues players who now have five or more goals in this postseason. Manson was wearing a microphone in Game 1 when he scored his overtime goal. He gingerly skated to the bench, but was back on the ice after intermission. The Blues had a 5-on-3 advantage late in the second period when Devon Toews was called for tripping and Valeri Nichushkin for goaltender interference after slamming into Binnington, whose stick went flying. That’s the second-most by three teammates in franchise history, trailing only 14 from Peter Forsberg, Valeri Kamensky and Claude Lemieux. “We knew this was going to be a long, hard series. It captured all the screams as he and his teammates celebrated. They answered back ... Now, the onus is on us.” “We made some good plays,” Perron said. “We didn’t have our jump tonight,” MacKinnon said. We did a great job.” “We played a connected hockey game,” Binnington said.

After the Colorado Avalanche squeaked out a 3-2 overtime win in Game 1, I wrote the following: “If every game this round looks like last night at 5-on-5 and ...

They are the better team in this series, they just have to play like it. The Blues are extremely dangerous and by ceding home ice advantage to them in this series, the Avalanche are now officially playing with fire. We have all watched this team explode for half-dozen goals in a nanosecond with some regularity this year, but given how Game 2 unfolded, as soon as St. Louis took a 2-0 lead, it felt like the game was out of reach, a feeling that was confirmed by the 4-1 final score. Sometimes that’s just how the cookie crumbles, but because the second round of the playoffs has now replaced the Detroit Red Wings as the Avalanche’s biggest rival, an effort like this is more difficult to write off as simply just a bad day at the office and not part of a larger pattern of taking their foot off the gas after impressive playoff performances. In Game 2, they didn’t get their thirteenth shot on goal until around eight minutes into the second period, and the Blues completely owned the most precious real estate in front of the net on both ends. In Game 1, Colorado controlled the entire game from the second period onward, as exemplified by their thirteen to zero shot advantage in eight minutes of overtime.

Avalanche vs. St. Louis Blues Game 3: Three keys to victory for ... (The Denver Post)

The Avalanche enters Game 3 of its Western Conference semifinal series against the Blues with mixed feelings.

Blocking shots is a key ingredient to a long playoff run and the Avs need to prove they are willing to sacrifice. Get the puck behind St. Louis’ defenseman and make the Blues work at taking it end to end. They were highly competitive in Game 1 but seemed disinterested in playing at an elite pace in Game 2. Speaking of competitive, the Avs need to up their game from the last one. That was highly evident in Game 1 but more of a rarity in Game 2. ST. LOUIS — The Avalanche enters Game 3 of its Western Conference semifinal series against the Blues with mixed feelings.

We did a good job in the first two periods and in the third, [goalie Jordan Binnington] held the lid for us (making 11 of his 30 saves). He had a good push and it was a good win." "We've got to stay composed, under control and kind of minimize the chances they have," Perron said, "and try to find that momentum the next shift because they just keep coming at you and it's all five of them with [defensemen Cale] Makar and [Devon] Toews. They do a great job. He led a 2-on-1 rush with linemate Pavel Buchnevich, kept the puck and beat Avalanche goalie Darcy Kuemper to the short side, past his glove. "It was exciting to play with 'Buch,'" Perron said. He's competitive, he hangs onto the puck and doesn't lose it." I have a lot of pride wearing the Blue Note."

He scored a goal in three of the games, and finished his only goalless outing against the Predators with three assists.

Colorado Avalanche vs St. Louis Blues (5/21/22) Betting Odds ... (Lineups)

While the Colorado Avalanche looked like an unstoppable force, the St. Louis Blues have played valiantly in this series.

Colorado can easily hang with St. Louis, and the Avalanche just need to make the right adjustments back. Game 1 was won by the right team, as Colorado dominated that game from start to finish. But St. Louis dominated in the face-off circle, winning 60.7% of the opportunities with the numbers sitting at 37-to-24. I’ll take the spread because I think MacKinnon and co. David Perron has 11 points this postseason run and 5.1 Expected Goals, with the latter stat leading all players still alive this postseason. He's stopped 163 of 172 shots in the postseason.#stlblues The offense will carry this team to a cup, not Keumper. St. Louis out-shot Colorado 32-to-31. He’s only recorded eight total points through the run, but he’s been a positive influence on the team at large. Their 10.02 Expected Goal Differential only trails Pittsburgh during this run, although the Penguins are now out of the playoffs after an epic collapse. The Blues are still moderate underdogs across the market, catching over +150 at some books. The Blues even dominated during Wednesday’s 4-1 demolition.
