"The pets were infected after being housed near imported small mammals from Ghana," the CDC said. Since then, there have been more than 450 reported cases in Nigeria and at least eight known exported cases internationally, the agency said. "Monkeypox can be a serious infection, with mortality rates from this type of monkeypox virus having been around 1% in other outbreaks. Those cases are typically linked to international travel or imported animals infected with the pox, the CDC said. "At this time, we don't want people to worry," Murthy said. The painful, raised poxes are pearly and fluid-filled, often surrounded by red circles.

Smallpox vaccines have, however, proven largely effective in preventing the spread of the virus. Cases outside of Africa have historically been less common, and typically linked to international travel or imported animals. What Is Monkeypox? (The New York Times)

There have been dozens of cases reported in recent weeks among populations not typically vulnerable to the disease.

Britain had reported nine cases as of Thursday, but Sajid Javid, Britain’s health secretary, said on Friday that the number had risen to 20. It was the first time there had been a monkeypox outbreak outside of Africa, according to the World Health Organization. The virus can spread via body fluids, skin contact and respiratory droplets. They can last for two to four weeks, with severe cases occurring more commonly among children, according to the World Health Organization. Typically it does not lead to major outbreaks — in most years there are just a handful of cases outside Africa, if any. Infected people will also have a fever and body aches.

The U.K’s Telegraph reported the health organization was convening leading experts on Friday to discuss the rise in cases, including how the virus is spread. The rise in cases not linked to travel to Africa has led officials to believe transmission of the virus is occurring in the community. Though the virus is not known to be sexually transmitted, most of the cases have been found among gay and bisexual men or men who have sex with men, but Van Kerkhove warned against fixating on this transmission route. The monkeypox virus does not typically spread easily between humans: it can be spread through close contact with an infected animal, person or materials contaminated with the virus. A WHO response to the outbreak. The virus can also lead to a rash that looks like chickenpox or syphilis.

Monkeypox identified in Massachusetts General Hospital patient (CBS News)

BOSTON - Massachusetts health officials announced they have confirmed a case of monkeypox, the first case of the rare virus identified in the United States ...

However, health officials said monkeypox is not easily spread and the reason they are giving so much attention to this case is because it was not transmitted through contact with an animal or through travel to areas with high cases of monkeypox, but through human-to-human contact. People should just be aware of symptoms, but not be afraid in any way," said MGH Dr. Paul Biddinger. "Really right now, human-to-human transmission really has occurred through close contact, generally speaking. The man, a Massachusetts resident, has been hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital since May 12. What we have seen in the United Kingdom, in Spain and in Europe has been novel and that gives us cause for concern, but I think appropriately people should not be afraid of monkeypox right now. He is in isolation and in stable condition.

European countries confirm more than 70 monkeypox cases (The Washington Post)

More than 70 confirmed monkeypox cases have been identified in Europe as of Friday, with more suspected, according to researchers tracking the virus.

Canadian public health officials said laboratories have not yet completed genetic sequencing of the samples and that one question is the role of asymptomatic transmission. Van Ranst wrote on Twitter that the second patient was a man who had been diagnosed in Flemish Brabant. She said that the suspected cases are in men between the ages of 30 and 55 who have had sex with other men. “Does that mean that we now have to fear a major outbreak here? Although the man had not recently traveled to a country where monkeypox is already spreading, health authorities have launched a full investigation into the case, according to the French Health Ministry. WHO spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic said that WHO was convening meetings “on a daily basis” with experts from affected countries and others in the global health community.

The disease starts with a fever, a headache, muscle aches, chills and exhaustion, according to the CDC. One sign that it is monkeypox and not smallpox is that in monkeypox, lymph nodes swell. In Africa, monkeypox has resulted in the death of as many as one in 10 people who contracted the virus. There is no proven, safe treatment for monkeypox virus infection but the Food and Drug Administration approved a vaccine for monkeypox, which also protects against smallpox, in 2019. It often begins on one’s face and then spreads to the rest of the body. Human-to-human contact is thought to be through large respiratory droplets, the CDC says. They got the virus from pet prairie dogs that were kept near some small mammals that had been imported from Ghana. The incubation period is usually seven to 14 days, though it can be as long as 21 days. They say it is not clear how people in the clusters were exposed but that they include men who have sex with men. Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with a virus that is related to those that cause smallpox and cowpox. Other African countries where it has been found: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Liberia, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo and Sierra Leone. It was first discovered in 1958, when outbreaks occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research. It did not immediately respond to an inquiry from NBC.
