It takes only minutes for Paul to observe, ruefully, the unequal treatment that he and Johnny receive. Gray’s protagonist, Paul Graff (Banks Repeta), is a public-school sixth grader who lives in Flushing with his middle-class outer-borough Jewish family: his mother, Esther (Anne Hathaway), is the president of the PTA; his father, Irving ( Jeremy Strong), is a contractor; and Ted (Ryan Sell), his older brother, attends a local private school, Forest Manor. But Paul’s main emotional connection is with his grandfather, Aaron (Anthony Hopkins), a British-Jewish immigrant whose mother was born in Ukraine. It’s clear that Aaron is the only member of the family who gets the idiosyncratic, dreamy, and impulsive child. Among recent films, “Armageddon Time” most resembles a cross between the Safdie brothers’ “ Good Time” (also set in Queens) and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “ Licorice Pizza”: like “Good Time,” its overwhelming subject is the presumption and the power of white privilege, and, like “Licorice Pizza,” it delves into the infinitesimal details of memory to rediscover the spirit of the past. I’m not at the Cannes Film Festival, but a few days ago the festival came to me, at a New York screening of a movie that premièred today at Cannes. The film is James Gray’s “Armageddon Time,” which is of local and national interest, and which makes the connection between the local and the national its very subject.

But there is great hope and heart on display here, and in the company of the great Anthony Hopkins as Grandpa Aaron (and directly modeled on Gray’s own English grandfather), a real inspiration. Strong is at times terribly unsympathetic, particularly in a brutal belt beating of Paul, who begs him to stop, but ultimately you can tell he just wants for him what he didn’t have growing up, at odds with the love he feels for his son. Johnny already is hiding the fact of living with a dementia-stricken grandmother, essentially an orphan trying against all odds to make it out of what the world already has in store for him. Paul is resistant and soon concocts a scheme to run off to Florida with Johnny in a misguided effort to follow their dreams. Writer-director James Gray has been to the Cannes Film Festival in competition on four previous occasions with We Own the Night, The Yards, The Immigrant and Two Lovers but has yet to walk away with a prize. Gray describes the words he wanted this film to convey: love, warmth, humor and loss, but also clearly class and racism at a time over 40 years ago that sadly still resonates today.
