The Golden State Warriors take a 1-0 lead over the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference finals with an emphatic 112-87 win in Game 1 on Wednesday ...

the warriors broke the game open early in the third quarter and are on their way to a blowout win in game 1. steph got off to a slow start but he's been awesome since the first quarter. wonder if dallas is ready to concede and take the starters out here While the Mavericks did miss a bunch of open looks, it also felt like they started to settle for 3s as the game went along. They started off 3 of 19 from downtown in the first quarter, and it didn't get any better from there, as they finished 11 of 48. They scored 16 of the Warriors' 28 first-quarter points, and nearly matched the Mavericks by themselves in that frame. Seven different Warriors scored in double figures, and six of those players had at least five rebounds as well. Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, who both struggled to find their offense in the first half, finally got going in the third, combining for 20 points on 8 of 13 from the field. During the heyday of this Warriors championship core, they made a habit of breaking games open in the third quarter. While the Warriors led for the majority of the first half, the Mavericks only trailed by nine at the break and were still well within striking distance. Luka Doncic had 20 points, seven rebounds and four assists to lead the Mavericks in defeat. They are now 7-0 at home in the playoffs, and will look to remain perfect in Game 2, which is set for Friday night.

For his part, Curry -- who graduated from Davidson College last weekend -- seems charmed that he is both mentor and rival to a new class of NBA stars. The Warriors beat a Dallas squad that attempted 19 more shots than they did from beyond the arc and ran a 5-out scheme for much of the night to maximize spacing, a practice mastered by the Warriors during their dynasty run. Now, after three years in the wilderness while nursing injuries and losing key contributors, the team has adopted a combination of homespun Warriors wisdom and practical magic. All the while, the Warriors relied on a lanky center with limited range to bolster their interior defense and rebounding, and they took twice as many shots from long midrange than they did at the rim. The Warriors' 112-87 Game 1 blowout win against the Dallas Mavericks at Chase Center on Wednesday night was a timely reminder that, in the NBA, championships are still the finest source of inspiration. "When I look at some of those guys, you're reminded of how young they are," Curry said, contemplating the NBA's starscape while the Warriors prepared for the Mavericks' arrival in San Francisco. " Jayson Tatum is 24.

However, the Mavericks clearly have a lot of fixing to do. “Doncic is as difficult a cover as there is in this league and we just asked Wigs to try to hound him and guard him as best as he could. Still, the Warriors were expecting a battle after halftime. If the Mavericks have shown anything during the playoff run – and throughout this season, really – it’s that they are resilient beyond question. It’s going to be a good series.” “We’re not going to dwell on it, but at the same time, we know that we have to get better. The Mavericks have been resilient all season and especially so in the playoffs. “Of course this is going to be tough,” Dončić said. Tack on the 51-35 rebounding deficit and they were out of this one quickly after halftime. We’ve lost the first game (at home) and gotten back into the series. No panic buttons are needed after their 112-87 loss to the Golden State Warriors in the opener of the Western Conference finals. And we won’t be fooled into thinking it’s a precursor to doomsday like so many national analysts were when it happened the first two times.

Assuming the Dallas Mavericks re-sign Jalen Brunson this summer, the need for another guard isn’t overly huge. At a time when it’s impossible NOT to be excited about the Mavs future, let’s throw ourselves deeper into the rabbit hole and imagine what could be if the draft falls the right way this summer. This year’s NBA Draft is one of those special times the Dallas Mavericks actually get to make their pick.

The Warriors are long, but Doncic can still get to the lane and to the rim. They’ve got to hit the free ones against a team capable of scoring like the Warriors. He doesn’t have to be outstanding every night, but his confidence was clear against Golden State and that wasn’t always the case in the previous two series. His first half foul problems forces Dallas to play both Dwight Powell and Davis Bertans more than he probably wanted to and it caused some of the defensive cracks which broke the damn in the second half. Everyone tightened up from there, which resulted in Doncic trying to do more as the game wore on and the Warriors sending help on drives earlier, which resulted in turnovers and tough looks. Kevon Looney tempted Doncic in the same way DeAndre Ayton did in the previous series in terms of allowing him to shoot the three. This is a minor thing, relative to the bigger picture of getting blown off the floor, but it felt worth mentioning. Luka Doncic got into the lane and made the right read, which resulted in 15 three point shots in the quarter. The Mavericks made a few attempts at a run and coach Kidd kept his starters in longer than one might’ve thought considering the score. Dallas started to find some offense, but the Maverick defense seemed unable to recover like we’ve seen with regularity throughout the regular season and playoffs. With Doncic starting on the bench, the Mavericks slowly worked themselves back into the game as the Warriors finally cooled some from the field. The Dallas Mavericks got blown off the floor in San Francisco Wednesday night, falling to the Golden State Warriors 112-87.

The Dallas Mavericks face the Golden State Warriors in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on Wednesday night. That’s what’s made them special for almost the past decade. Said Kidd: "When we go back and look at the open shots that we created, it's a lot of them. Yeah, the Mavs - even with Luka’s 18 points - are hurting. "He understands what they're trying to do,'' Kidd said of the Warriors' successful defensive approach. Throughout the second quarter he repeatedly reached up to his right shoulder, indicating discomfort there. Doncic has 20, Brunson 18 and Dinwiddie 17. On the other side, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins and co. In 10 playoff games this season, Doncic is averaging 31.5 points, 10.1 rebounds, 6.6 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Golden State Warriors: Three things to watch in ... (NBC Sports)

Luka Doncic and Stephen Curry will get the headlines when the Mavericks take on the Warriors, but the defenses and benches will decide who wins.

I trust that, but if the Warriors from the fourth quarter of Game 6 against Memphis show up for every game and every quarter this series, they will win. But if Doncic hunts Poole off the floor, the Warriors lose a weapon and have to play bigger lineups. Dallas plays defense on a string probably better than any team still going in the postseason — the Mavericks aren’t stacked with great individual defenders, but they have a lot of solid ones all on the same page and not making mistakes. The Warriors generally will let a star go off and put up a big point total but work to shut down everyone else — Jokic had amazing games in the first round, but no other Nuggets player found their footing. Andrew Wiggins will start with the assignment, but Doncic is patient and will hunt the weakest link, which could make Poole nearly unplayable in crucial moments (expect Doncic and the Mavs to hunt Poole mercilessly). However, the Warriors’ best playoff lineup — with Poole, Curry and Thompson in a three-guard set — is undersized and Doncic will hunt those smaller players and feast.

His game would have fit in very well in the system that the Warriors have, and he would have been left open a lot (due to the fact that teams have to guard Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole). So it was a matter of just playing with a lot of force and really bringing the effort." We can feel good now but this team was down 2-0 and won the series last round." "He's just brilliant," Spencer Dinwiddie said. "So it requires a ton of effort, and for the most part, that effort was there. The Warriors are leaving Game 1 happy with their performance, but they know this is just a starting point. Wiggs is going to keep doing it, but it's just one more thing to think about and that's good playoff basketball." It was the third-lowest career scoring playoff game for Doncic and was just the third time out of 24 postseason games he failed to score more than 20 points. "It's just one more thing to think about. According to Thompson's assessment, being with Golden State has allowed Wiggins to be the fullest version of himself as a player. "But I think I've got to be better. Still, someone had to take the brunt of that load. Heading into this series, the Warriors were preaching a team-defense mentality.

Stephen Curry, Warriors Telepathy on Display Against Mavs (Sports Illustrated)

Golden State coasted to a Game 1 win vs. Dallas to open the Western Conference finals.

And that’s how the highlight of the night came to be. And Looney, seeing Curry coming, set a hard screen that knocked the pursuing Finney-Smith out of the play, giving Curry room to catch, turn and shoot. After throwing the pass, Curry immediately turned and darted toward the arc. Thompson caught a rhythm after a fast-break layup, exploding for 11 points in the period. And Curry got on one of those rolls where it seems he can do no wrong—even when it sort of looks like he’s about to do something wrong. It wasn’t initially a great night for the Warriors’ stars either. This is the deepest the Mavericks have been in the postseason since 2011, the year they won the title. But that’s just the thing with these Warriors over the last eight years: It’s often hard to tell where the line is between talent, luck and flat-out magic. “They’ve been through the bad and the good. … So that was an example of those guys just knowing each other well, and Draymond knowing exactly what Steph was going to do.” SAN FRANCISCO – Steph Curry was trapped in the corner, all escape routes and passing lanes cut off, leaving few options, none of them great. “So there’s a lot of value in that.

They were cheering on their guys.”. .A lot of folks just automatically assumed because Phoenix was playing a Game 7 at home against the Mavs this past Sunday, that the Suns would win and advance to the Western Conference Finals. When Warriors coach Steve Kerr was asked if he was concerned about how the Suns defended Luka Doncic and how the Suns’ offense collapsed as the series progressed: “I’m not concerned about Phoenix at all. “They drafted (Jalen) Brunson. They’ve done a lot of things right, and it’s paying off for them now.”. .Kerr remembers when the Warriors were playing the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Finals from 2015-’18, how LeBron James would target players and hunt certain mismatches. In a press release from the NBA, during Game 7 Sunday at Phoenix, the Mavs: “On multiple occasions, several players and a member of the coaching staff stood for an extended period in the Mavericks’ team bench area, stood away from the team bench, and were on or encroaching upon the playing court during game.” Coach Jason Kidd said: “I know about the fine. “What they’ve accomplished not just this year but over the last four or five years, even when they were struggling, they were developing (Dorian) Finney-Smith, they were developing (Maxi) Kleber,” Kerr said. “In Milwaukee it was a franchise that was at the bottom, and we were trying to help build something and develop players,” Kidd said. “But when you talk about those traits, they all have one thing in common and that’s winning, and that’s what he does. Yeah, I think with the Nets I was still a player,” Kidd said. “Luka reminds me of Luka,” Kidd said. When you talk about those traits, hopefully at some point he will be right there with those guys, just not his ability to play basketball but to have those championships.” “Just have fun,” Kidd said. “Then the biggest thing is being a defensive-minded team. In Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals against the Warriors on Wednesday night, the Mavericks really struggled to move the ball and they reverted back to these ways of leaning on Luka Doncic to try and bail them out essentially. Maybe this should have been expected given that the Mavericks had to fight their way through a seven-game series with the Suns only to go on the road against a championship-level team in the Warriors for Game 1 of this series, but Golden State never looked worried in this one and they seemed to handle Dallas’ game plan on both ends of the floor perfectly.
