The Panthers have finally won an NHL playoff series for the first time since 1996, but they face their Florida rivals, the Lightning, in the second round.

The Lightning also had a tight series, edging out the Toronto Maple Leafs in seven games. The Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning have played in the playoffs before, of course. Behind two overtime victories, the Panthers took out the Washington Capitals in six games.

3 Keys: Lightning at Panthers, Game 1 of Eastern Second Round (NHL.com)

The Florida Panthers are looking forward to getting a second chance to dethrone the Tampa Bay Lightning when they play Game 1 of the Eastern Conference ...

The Panthers and the Lightning each got off to a slow start in the first round and were chasing for most of those series. The Lightning did not hold a morning skate Tuesday. ... The Lightning could dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen, which they did at times during the regular season. Vasilevskiy had a 3.04 goals-against average and .897 save percentage against the Maple Leafs, allowing at least three goals in each of the first six games before making 30 saves in Game 7. The Panthers learned last season that getting into a special teams battle with the Lightning is dangerous. He was pulled from two of his three playoff starts against Tampa Bay last season, going 1-2 with a 5.33 GAA and .841 save percentage in that series. "It's going to be a rollercoaster ride and we can talk about it until we're blue in the face, until you go through it, until you realize and understand it. So that just can't happen, and we know it." We gave away so many energy and emotions the last two years and obviously we didn't have much time to recover. The Lightning won in six games and went on to win the Stanley Cup for the second straight season. But the Lightning know they will have their hands full against the Panthers, who won the Presidents' Trophy as the NHL regular-season leaders in points and led the League in scoring with 4.11 goals per game during the regular season. "They scored the most goals in the League. They've had multiple comebacks. "Everybody knows how good they are," Panthers forward Anton Lundell said.

On May 16th, 2021 the Lightning defeated the Panthers, 5-4, on a late Brayden Point goal to pick up the win (in Sunrise) in Game One of their opening round ...

This is probably more for Florida than Tampa, but the Lightning found out early in the Toronto series what happens when a game is littered with penalties. In Game One they combined for 9 goals, 11 in Game Three, and 8 in Game Four. While they both still possess the offensive fire power to rack up those kind of scores, it’s unlikely they want to get in those types of shootouts. While some of the players have changed, the bulk of the roster remember watching the Lightning celebrate the series victory last year and want to flip the script. In one of those weird scheduling quirks that pop up every once in a while, the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers are meeting in the playoffs almost exactly one year after kicking off their playoff series last season. Things are a little different this year as the two teams reacquaint themselves in the postseason. The highlight of the game was Nikita Kucherov returning from his season-long injury to post two goals and an assist in the Lightning victory.

After being whistled for a pair of infractions within the first eight minutes of the first period, they went on to take four more penalties throughout the game. "At 5-on-5, I think we were the better team." "We've got so much talent, so much depth on our power play, a lot of guys that can shoot the puck. Of course, the Panthers know they could've made it a bit tougher on Vasilevsky by crashing the crease and generating more second and third scoring chances. "I thought he played a really solid game." "It's the little things in the game. Able to fly up and down the ice quite a bit more freely than in Round 1, he fired off two shots on goal tonight. While it does no good to dwell on these decisions, it looked like the Panthers had a very strong case. Pulling away with another goal on the power play, Kucherov scored to make it 3-1 at 15:54. But the goal did not come without a bit of controversy. On the ensuing man advantage, Ross Colton lit the lamp to make it 4-1 with 2:16 left in regulation. "A couple chances, and they put it in the back of our net. "We had the lead almost the whole game," Panthers forward Anthony Duclair said.

The Lightning have proven they are experts at digging out of holes in a best-of-7 over the years. While winning without Point will be difficult and the Lightning have a habit of using Game 1 to feel out their opponents, there’s still value backing the Bolts at a good number in the series opener. 21+. New customers only. The problem is that we saw what can happen when a team commits to gumming up the neutral zone against the Panthers. The Washington Capitals had plenty of chances to upset the Cats in Round 1 but were let down by inconsistent goaltending and some lapses in big moments. 21+. New customers only. There are no secrets to how the Panthers will want to play this series. No matter how Cooper — who is always open to dressing 11 forwards and seven defensemen — constructs his lineup, it will likely take some time for Tampa Bay to make the right adjustments in this series. Long story short, losing Point isn’t just about losing a great player, it’s also about the downstream impact it will have on a lineup that looked very settled as we got to the business end of Round 1. New customers only.

The Panthers have threatened to sell rats for $20 at their gift shop, but as of Tuesday they were “only” $5. “It’s been a good ride, and it’s time to do something else.” Only after the game is complete and preferably following a Florida Panthers victory. “But in the meantime, we’re that magical Cinderella story.” The NHL in the tropics was a novelty then, and the Panthers were only a few years old, many of their novice fans still trying to figure out what a blue-line violation was. We built an identity and a relationship with the fans.” The remarkable lasting magic of the Year of the Rat owes some of its endurance to the dearth of anything else that might have come along to earn as cherished a place in the scrapbook of memories all fans keep. The story gets a little different each time.” Two decades ago it was the serendipity of rubber and plastic rats slapping onto the ice rink.

The Panthers fell right into the Lightning's trap in Game 1 of their ... (Miami Herald)

The Florida Panthers didn't go as far as saying they felt like they should have won Game 1 of their second-round series against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Point is a fixture in the Lightning’s top six and on the power play, and led Tampa Bay with 14 goals in each of the last two postseasons. In the 2019-20 NHL season, Tampa Bay averaged 3.02 power plays per game in the regular season — just the 13th most in the league — and then had the third most power plays in the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs with three per game. Last season, Tampa Bay averaged 3.21 power plays per game in the regular season — the third most in the NHL — and then led the 2021 Cup playoffs in total power plays with 2.96 per game. If the Panthers can replicate their even-strength play, stay out of the penalty box and maybe cash in on one of their own power plays — they went 0 for 3 in Game 1 and are now 0 of 21 in the playoffs — then they could easily regroup to win this series and reach the NHL Conference Finals for the first time since 1996. It made the opening game of this series a flashback to last year, when the Panthers and Lightning met in the first round of the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs, and Tampa Bay rallied in Game 1 to send Florida into a hole it could never escape in the six-game series. This is what the Lightning does, though, and it’s why Tampa Bay has won two consecutive Stanley Cups and now leads the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Panthers, 1-0 in Round 2.
