PGA Championship 2022: Jordan Spieth's slam try, Phil Mickelson's ... (CBSSports.com)

This time last year, the event of the season was about to play out, and nobody had any idea. Phil Mickelson ultimately outlasted Brooks Koepka and Louis ...

Of course, that might be less of a function of the PGA and more of a function of majors in general. At Augusta, McIlroy preached the importance of merely staying in the tournament early, but his reality is that he's lit the field up early when he's gone on to victory. It's given us Rory's career summer (2014), Spieth's near three-major season (2015), J.T.'s first (2017), Brooks-Tiger (2018), Brooks-D.J. (2019), Morikawa magic (2020) and Phil-Brooks (2021). I don't know how much more we can ask this time around, but it's a tournament that seems to always deliver. Among all the important first rounds to monitor that could inform us how this week will play out, McIlroy's is at the top of the list. 6. Brooks Koepka's health: One of the stars of last year's PGA Championship is up in the air for this one. While his presence at Southern Hills won't be quite as big of a circus as it was at Augusta National -- partly because we've already seen him and partly because the Masters is the brightest stage in the sport -- it's still meaningful that he's in Tulsa. He won't win, and he likely won't contend, but Tiger was the champion the last time a major was played on this golf course, and it's always nice to get those players in the field a decade or more later (in this instance, 15 years). Expectations for Woods should be informed by what he did at the Masters. Making the weekend and finishing tournaments is a win when you almost lost your leg the year before, and that's where Woods resides. Southern Hills should theoretically set up perfectly for him -- CBS analyst Dottie Pepper said last week that it reminded her of Augusta National in that it has big greens but small landing spots -- and it would be great to see him get into contention on a Sunday this time around. I'm sad that we don't get a classic Phil presser as defending champ, sad we don't get a proper twilight of his career, and sad that the news cycle of the LIV Golf sideshow is invading the air of best championships in the world. 5. Justin Thomas' drought: It's been insinuated a lot over the last few years, but it's a fair thing to say (mostly because J.T. himself has said it): Thomas is not competitive enough at major championships. It will be his sixth attempt at this event, and the closest Spieth has come to this point was a strange T3 in 2019 at Bethpage in what was perhaps the best putting week of his life (2.66 strokes gained on the greens, double the event's second-best number). He's lost to one golfer in two tournaments since the Masters and takes a ton of confidence into a championship that, along with the U.S. Open, is probably least suited to his style. It's far more difficult to ignore his absence when Mickelson is the defending champion of the PGA, presumably healthy and yet still absent from the second major of the year. This time last year, the event of the season was about to play out, and nobody had any idea.

The 2022 PGA Championship's curious journey from Trump ... (GolfDigest.com)

Donald Trump, Phil Mickelson, Greg Norman and the bizarre story behind the 2022 PGA Championship.

He’s a student of the game and a formidable figure in the game. But he’s the one he has to decide where he wants to play and what he wants to do.” The Trump PGA was on the horizon. The PGA of America was voiding a contract, and that’s never easy. The USGA and the PGA of America compete — for courses and regions and dates. In February, on the eve of the Honda Classic pro-am, Nicklaus attended a dinner for maybe 250 people at the PGA National Resort, where the tournament is played. Bishop got to know Trump through Pete Bevacqua, a trained lawyer who is now the chairman of the NBC Sports Group. But back then he was a former USGA executive who had become the CEO of the PGA late in 2012. When the PGA Tour went to Trump Doral, in the years that Cadillac was the title sponsor of the tournament there, the automobile manufacturer found it hard to share the spotlight with Trump, who would come and go not in a Cadillac SUV but a Sikorsky helicopter. He had been working the crowd – the 29,000 men and women of the PGA of America, the overwhelming majority of them white men over 30 – for years. In 2014, the PGA of America announced the 2022 PGA Championship would be at Trump Bedminster. Finally, Donald J. Trump could check off a box: a Trump golf course would be the venue for one of golf’s oldest and greatest championships. He was the president of the United States and he knew what was coming: white corporate tents on his sweeping Bedminster lawns, the game’s best golfers on his magnificent Bedminster course and his spectacular driving range and in his fabulous Bedminster clubhouse, the whole it on the former John DeLorean estate. And the news came from the PGA of America, not Phil.

Finding a mix of top-tier golfers and low-priced sleepers is the key to daily fantasy golf.

I feel the best about Billy Horschel, so I’m going to ride him as my fourth player. His form makes the most sense at this level, and I’m going to use him as my third core player. Four of these five players have played at a high level over the last few seasons. In addition, there is a good chance that all six of my golfers (depending on the site) must play on the weekend and finish in the top 15. If I wanted to build around two of these six players, it would be Schauffele with Jordan Spieth or Hideki Matsuyama. There are times when I’ll rotate in one of the top-tier players to help create a broader range on my last two players while using three other core players.

PGA expert picks and sleepers for Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, and the PGA Championship 2022 field at Southern Hills.

Who wins the PGA Championship 2022 at Southern Hills? And which epic long shot is a must-back? He is almost certainly going to be in contention at the PGA Championship 2022 with his top-notch approach game. One shocking choice from Johnson: The expert is fading Cameron Smith, even though he has two victories this season and was in contention at the Masters. The 28-year-old hasn't been quite the same since his triple-bogey on the 12th hole at Augusta that took him out of contention. Now, Johnson, the first producer of "Inside the PGA Tour" and longtime ABC Sports golf producer who worked with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, has released his highly confident 2022 PGA Championship picks. At the PGA Championship, the past two winners were surprises, with 50-year-old Mickelson winning last year and Collin Morikawa taking the 2020 title in his second major start. In his last set of predictions for SportsLine, he nailed the Masters for the third time in four years.

2022 PGA Championship Bettors' Roundtable: Favorites, Sleepers ... (Sports Illustrated)

Who looks ready to raise the Wanamaker? Who will disappoint? Our panel of gambling experts, fantasy players and golf writers to break down the field.

Besides losing the Match Play final to Scheffler, he was third in the Hawaiian Open and a quiet fourth at the Players. The man just gets his ball in the hole. And since Southern Hills doesn't appear to be the typical PGA Championship driving brute, and how play on and around the greens will be paramount ... that's right: Cam Smith. Morikawa is one of a few guys that I trust down the stretch if he’s in contention at a major. As you might expect, a quick search on the highest rated golfers in strokes-gained approach to the green reveals some of the best players on the PGA Tour. Of note this week we have Will Zalatoris, Viktor Hovland and Justin Thomas currently in the top 5 in that category. It wasn’t that long ago that most of us had Conners and Scottie Scheffler on the same level and while Scheffler has shot into the stratosphere, Conners still has a chance to make a big move this year. But he’s righted the ship over the past couple months and looks ready to make a move. Woods will have a few factors going for him at Southern Hills that he did not at Augusta National. The walk is far less strenuous, and the temperatures are expected to be in the 80s. He's blown himself up with rounds in the 80s at the 2019 PGA and at the Masters just last month, but he still tied for 23rd at Augusta. Imagine how much higher on the leaderboard he'd have been if that 80 was even just a 75. He couldn't crack the top 25 at Augusta, another course where a short game is mandatory. In just five Masters appearances he already has four top 10s, and were it not for dunking one at the 12th on Sunday last month, perhaps he’d already have a major. Gary Van Sickle: It's the Patrick Cantlay Frown versus the Cameron Smith Mullet. Neither has played in all that many majors so far and both have the short games to win any of the four majors. That’s Thomas. He’s in great form in 2022, can be lethal with the driver, and ranks second among the top 150 players in the world in strokes gained tee-to-green over the last three months and fourth in strokes gained approaching the green in the same time span. Similar to Hugh’s thought pattern above, I want to pick a horse who will control shots into those greens, understand the contours, and put himself in position to score. If Smith can find his way off the tee, he’ll be in position for his third win of the year starting Sunday. — Josh Kendall, golf writer So I’m looking for someone with a track record of excellent play on his approach and then with the putter in his hands. And yes, he hasn’t finished better than fourth in his last 15 major tournament appearances since winning the PGA in 2017. Hanse reduced the number of trees in the recent redesign, but they’ll still come into play this week when golfers hit wayward tee shots. He finished the weekend with a pair of 69s and beat Woody Austin by two strokes. Southern Hills Country Club is located in Tulsa, Okla. It is designer Perry Maxwell’s greatest course and it was rebuilt in 2018 by architect Gil Hanse. Nearly every hole on the course bends left or right to create difficult tee shots. Bryson DeChambeau continues to be in the field, but given his recent wrist surgery, it’s hard to see him teeing it up this week. Temperatures on Thursday and Friday will be in the 80s with wind gusts up to 30 mph in the afternoons. It should be noted that Scheffler calls Southern Hills his favorite golf course in the world. Now, coming off the Masters, the PGA Championship offers a springboard for the rest of the golf season as we head into the summer with Memorial Day next weekend.

'$18 for a freakin' beer?': PGA Championship prices peeve golf fans (Golf.com)

A leaked photo of the PGA Championship's exorbitant menu prices left golf fans (and players) aghast on social media Monday.

Of course, there’s still a conversation to be had about the morality of that decision. This isn’t to specifically target the PGA of America, which didn’t respond to GOLF’s request for comment. Bottles of Aquafina — the tournament’s official water — run at $6 a pop. Rather, it was a reflection of a growing trend of exorbitantly priced concessions at professional sports games. (Expected temperatures for the weekend in Tulsa are in the upper-80s.) can retails for the nosebleed price of $18 — or $1 more than the cost of an 18-pack of Michelob Ultra at your nearest Target. For $19, fans can upgrade their beer selection to a Stella Artois of a similar size or a Mich Ultra organic hard seltzer.

So, although it’s not a high-emphasis statistic, I believe it will play a role. Although there aren’t many “birdie holes” at Southern Hills, expect those players who create opportunities to be leading the pack this week. Plus, although it’s somewhat expected, the last three winners at PGA Championships on Par 70’s ranked no worse than fourth in this stat for the week. The fairways were also widened from about 28 yards to nearly 40 yards, so expect players to utilize the big stick more often. As mentioned, the 2018 Gil Hanse restoration of Southern Hills eliminated the rough around the greens and replaced it with steep run-off areas that will punish players who lack precision with their irons. PGA Championship 2022: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson reverse ... (CBSSports.com)

Could Tiger do what Lefty did just 12 months ago in surprising every single one of us?

Woods has shown up a lot less than Mickelson over the course of his career (current worldwide tournament count goes to Mickelson, 712-419), but he's won a lot more when he's been there (22% to 7% for Tiger). He's had plenty of periods of not play at all, though, for a variety of reasons including but not limited to injury, scandal, recovery and simply wanting to be with his family more than wanting to perform for a sports nation. When he went to Kiawah Island, he was a champion in name only (and a great one at that), and yet he did the only thing that week that he'd done for the previous three decades. He's showing up because he loves golf and takes his status as a champion of this event seriously. If Mickelson taught us anything about historically great players at the PGA Championship last year, it was exactly that. The contrast continues with Mickelson and Woods, except they have completely exchanged roles. The back half of Tiger's story is the opposite of Phil's. When Woods played, he was great. And you would have been right to do so. Tiger is conservative and almost understated on the course. Tiger pushed his body to the limit, and it betrayed him. He went into the week of the 2021 PGA Championship without a top 20 finish since August 2020. Literal books have been written about the subject, and you can list the ways in which they're polar opposites almost reflexively.

How course design will create some awkward moments at the PGA ... (Golf.com)

This week's PGA Championship host course, Southern Hills, has a corner of the property that will make things weird for competitors.

These long days in the Oklahoma sun will need to be long days of Oklahoma sun. That corner of the property is particularly fun, if only for the fact that fans can plop down in that Oklahoma sun and actually enjoy it all from one spot. The tee shot that trickles long of the 6th green will suddenly find itself on the 7th tee box. (If you squint hard enough at the photo atop this page, you’ll see Arnaus off in the distance, stuck at golf’s version of a stop light.) Arnaus waited for a few minutes, as many pros will do this week, as Lowry stuck his peg in the ground and played his approach. TULSA, Okla. — The long days in the Oklahoma sun might feel extra long this week at Southern Hills, for no other reason than the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th holes.

PGA Championship 2022: The reasons Tiger Woods will (and won't ... (GolfDigest.com)

Tiger Woods arrives in Tulsa stronger and better prepared to compete on his surgically repaired leg. Still, he lacks tournament reps that would have him ...

He looked to be moving in slow motion on a cold and windy Saturday at Augusta. Sweating through your shirt on the golf course probably isn’t your cup of tea, but those are the exact type of conditions where Woods excels at this stage of his career. One thing that is certain, however, is that any improvement from the Masters will send an unmistakable message: that Tiger is continuing to progress, and that this latest chapter in a roller coaster career is only just beginning. His victory at the 2019 Masters came at the tail-end of a 16-month build up during which he played 26 tournaments. The weather should help, too—temperatures are expected to be in the 80s all week at Southern Hills, and Woods has struggled mightily in cool conditions since his spinal fusion surgery in 2017. One can only assume that an additional month of full-time work with elite trainers and doctors—we’re talking multiple hours per day, every day—will have his leg ready to handle more than it could at Augusta. He’s also had more time to familiarize himself with his new body’s limitations and to groove the swing he’s pieced together despite limited mobility. He simply has to get his leg stronger, and that’s not going to happen on the driving range or the golf course. Woods showed over the first two rounds at Augusta National that he still has the strength, touch and guile to contend in the sport’s biggest events. Those who watched Woods on Sunday—and on Monday morning, when he returned to Southern Hills to inspect the back nine—say he looks to have more speed than he did at Augusta National, and that he’s moving better. First, Woods has had four extra weeks of training, and while his near obsession with the gym has produced a fair share of setbacks, strength work will play a vital role in this latest comeback. But he showed over the last two rounds that having the ability to keep it together for one or two rounds won’t cut it. Woods told reporters at Southern Hills on Sunday that he refocused his singular gaze away from the year’s first major and toward the second just hours after the Masters finished. It’s going to ache, but that’s the way it’s going to be.

Who will win the PGA Championship in 2022? Odds, betting ... (Sporting News)

The Sporting News breaks down the PGA Championship field for 2022. Find out which golfers are the best bets for the PGA Tour's second major of the season.

Woods is set to participate in the event this year; he missed it in 2021 while recovering from injuries sustained in a Feb. 23 car crash earlier that year. Of course, Young's weakness is the all-important approach game, where he ranks 83rd in SG:APR. Still, he drives and putts well enough to draw consideration as an 80-1 sleeper pick. Bradley doesn't excel in any of the four key categories we're looking at for this week's tournament, but he ranks top-36 in SG:APR, SG:OTT and scrambling from the rough. They each have +400 odds for a top-10 finish and would be great DFS fillers in the sub-$9,000 salary range. Meanwhile, Berger ranks top-10 in SG:APR and scrambling from the rough but like Lowry, is a bit weaker than some other performers off the tee. Thomas ranks top-five in SG:OTT, top 10 in scrambling from the rough and is the best one-putter on the PGA Tour with a one-putt percentage of just under 46. Below is a breakdown of several candidates to consider in this year's PGA Championship field. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods (+6500) ranks lower than usual among the field as he looks to return to form in his second event back from a 2021 car crash that left him with severe injuries. However, since then, his best finish is a T-37 in 2020, so he will be looking for a bounce-back performance this year. Scheffler is playing the best golf of his career and earned his first major win at the Masters in April. He has finished top 10 in each of his last PGA Championship appearances. Any of the top golfers in the field could win this year's major. Can he repeat his success at the tour's next major, the 2022 PGA Championship? That won't be easy.

PGA Championship 2022 - Rickie Fowler is trying to find pieces of ... (ESPN)

Rickie Fowler remains on a quest to find his old game. As Fowler tries to find his form, he faces a question others are asking: stay on the PGA Tour or ...

"I have to work fast on the range, man," Tillery said. The PGA Tour has made it clear it will not grant releases to play in the LIV Tour events, and that any player who went anyway would be subject to a lifetime ban, something that is likely to be challenged in court. But on some level, it would still feel like a seismic event in the world of golf. Fowler insists he's never lost his hunger for the game, even at his lowest points. To me, there's no better feeling than when you know you've beaten your buddies and you kind of have the bragging rights and you accept that when your buddies beat you. My job is to help him navigate that process of what he already knows how to do." He sounded, in fact, like someone very much open to the idea. But the past few years, with Harmon no longer teaching full time, he's been revisiting some elements of his old swing with coach John Tillery. "I don't know if I want to throw names out there or not," Fowler said. That's kind of going back to the competing with your friend and buddies. Although he didn't win at the same clip as some of his peers (five times in the past decade), he had an undeniable allure with fans, both young and old. Long before a TV show like "Ted Lasso" made acts of kindness seem cool again (instead of corny), Fowler was out there hugging people for capturing trophies, even ones he wanted badly.

PGA Championship 2022 live updates: Latest news, field, odds and ... (The Athletic)

Hello, friends, and welcome to the second major of the 2022 PGA Tour season. We're at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma this week for the PGA ...

The combination of these two injuries has sapped all momentum from a player who was last season at the Ryder Cup waving his driver in the air like a sword after driving the green on No. 1 in Sunday singles, happily getting along with all his teammates and turning a lot of jeers into cheers that week. DeChambeau underwent hand surgery after last month's Masters, during which he went 76-80 and missed the cut by eight strokes. Max Homa is sitting here at +6600, and I’m thinking that’s really good value for someone with two PGA Tour wins this season, plus another two top 10s and four top 20s. Here’s a look at McIlroy’s first and second rounds in the last nine major tournaments. He’s No. 7 in strokes gained off the tee, per DataGolf, and he’s proven he has the ability to get near the top of these top-tier leaderboards. Mickelson pulled out last week, an extremely rare occurrence for the previous year’s winner, and that will result in more attention being played to the golf.

2022 PGA Championship odds, field: Surprising picks, predictions ... (CBSSports.com)

PGA Championship 2022 picks for Tiger Woods, Jon Rahm, and the field at Southern Hills Country Club.

Check out the 2022 PGA Championship odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected 2022 PGA Championship leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed eight golf majors, including this year's Masters. Hovland rebounded from being cut at the WM Phoenix Open in February to taking fourth at the Genesis Invitational and finishing second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in his next outing. The putter has let him down too, as he ranks 175th in strokes gained in that category, making him a golfer to fade in 2022 PGA Championship bets, according to the model. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected 2022 PGA Championship leaderboard. One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2022 PGA Championship: Jordan Spieth, a three-time major champion and one of the top favorites, stumbles at Southern Hills and doesn't even crack the top 10. The former world No. 1 had to withdraw from the AT&T Byron Nelson for unknown reasons last week, putting his effectiveness in the 2022 PGA Championship into question.

2022 PGA Championship odds, picks: Tiger Woods predictions by ... (CBSSports.com)

Golf legend Tiger Woods is part of the 2022 PGA Championship field at Southern Hills Country Club.

Who will win the 2022 PGA Championship, which long shots will stun the golfing world, and where will Tiger Woods finish? Woods is a long shot to win the PGA Championship 2022, according to oddsmakers, but his success in majors and extensive knowledge of the course could be major X-factors. The model just locked in its Tiger Woods PGA Championship picks here. He's also had success at Southern Hills, winning the 2007 PGA Championship in convincing fashion. Coming off a second-place finish at the Masters and a fifth-place finish at the Wells Fargo Championship, McIlroy is back up to No. 7 in the world after falling to as low as 16 late last season. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected 2022 PGA Championship leaderboard. However, he's still a 50-1 long shot in the 2022 PGA Championship odds at Caesars Sportsbook, while Scottie Scheffler is the 11-1 PGA Championship favorite as the No. 1 player in the world.

PGA Championship 2022: Another historically and unequivocally ... (GolfDigest.com)

Mike Stachura is still not over the fact that the PGA Championship has moved to May, but it doesn't stop him from doing what he does—make a pick that is ...

No player in the field other than Tiger Woods has won more pro events in the month of May than Rory McIlroy (Woods has eight, McIlroy has seven). He is Mr. May, which sort of says a lot. So I added them up, and, of course still not much clarity, not the right amount of spice for the price (see PGA Championship concession stands). One more thing probably matters in my misplaced major metrics. How about some biorhythms (which, as it turns out was not, but could have been, quite the pickup line in Tulsa in the 1980s)? If a major has relocated to the month of May, surely, someone’s career success in May should be the clincher for my pick. The thing of it is, I want the PGA Championship to feel like August again. (Like the collection of chain saws in that weird neighbor’s garage right next to the oversized spare freezer, this should be a sign that I again am choosing poorly.) I blame global warming or COVID or whatever it is that has turned April and much of May up here in the Northeast to a kind of nuclear-winter-meets-Yakutsk. The PGA is firmly in May now, and it is once again my appointed task to embarrass myself with my historically and unequivocally incorrect major championship prediction. So, to build some August feeling into my PGA Championship calculus, I first culled the field to only those who had played a PGA in August. Turns out, that didn’t help much. Duh, the PGA was played in August two years ago because of the pandemic. I miss the PGA Championship in August. Maybe I’m just nostalgic for sweat-stained Dockers (Tom Lehman at Valhalla in 2000, look it up), ice cream as a beverage or how the difference between the temperature on the golf course at a PGA Championship and that of the media center equates approximately to the difference between the temperature on Venus and Uranus (about 1,200 degrees, give or take). Repositioning it in May just seems like making it less of a major. Or going stag to your prom (not that I would know). Or finding out that Pluto isn’t really a planet. But like the idiot in front of you at CVS with a roll of receipts he swears are coupons, I press on undeterred.

2022 PGA Championship: What to expect as Southern Hills course ... (CBSSports.com)

Major championship aspirations, nervous moments and the Tulsa skyline are all on the horizon as players prepare to step foot on the first tee at Southern ...

With the potential to clock in north of 7,500 yards and playing to a par 70, as we have mentioned, Southern Hills will demand excellence from players in the short game department. You have to work the ball quite a bit, you have to, you really, really have to be good around the greens. You get some grainy, elevated greens to where it's difficult to get the ball around the hole, and over the course of the round in a tournament, that can be quite a few shots. You're not going to hit 18 greens around here and balls are going to repel off the greens. With both par 5s measuring over 630 yards and three par 3s over 200 yards, it is the par 4s which will likely tell the tale of this championship as those are the holes which competitors will be able to separate themselves. There's going to be a lot -- the greens play maybe three quarters of the size that they actually are," said Jordan Spieth, who will attempt to complete the career grand slam this week. "I think the green complexes are perfectly fitting to the holes. That is where Maxwell was often at his best as he contributed to some of the most well-known golf courses in the world. "The thing we love about short grass, I think all of us included, is that it opens up an entire range of possibilities," said Hanse. "I think it gets not only in your head on the approach shot but then the recovery shots are so much more interesting. Short game is a common theme among those answers players have provided when asked to give their thoughts on the new-look Southern Hills. "I think the thing about Southern Hills is that I never understood the topography," Hanse told The Fried Egg podcast. He extended a few holes and removed rough, especially around the green, as Jim Furyk noted before the 2021 Senior PGA Championship. That is exact point Hanse was trying to make.

It might take a little extra work, a little bit harder effort to maintain physically or maintain the skills, but gosh, is it worth it in the end.” Thus, after winning his first PGA Tour title 30 years ago when he stunned the golf world to capture the Northern Telecom Open as a junior at Arizona State University, Mickelson won his 45th. On Saturday, after shooting a 68 of his own, Jordan Spieth summed up the post-round sentiment of many of his colleagues. Mickelson’s putt accentuated a 31 on his second nine that put him at 5-under for the tournament and energized a crowd that was growing with each birdie. “Any time one of us can make the cut, I think it’s really good for,” Marek said. “I have a lot of belief in myself, and I’ve been playing well for quite a while,” Conners said. You need to get the ball up and down and you need to roll in birdie putts. He finished third in the Arnold Palmer Invitational, seventh in the Players Championship and tied for eighth in the Masters leading up to the PGA Championship. He’d been a regular on the first page of leaderboards for a few months now while seeking his first major title and second PGA Tour victory. “I chased mini-tours nine or 10 years after college, always with the goal of trying to get out here. I hit a lot of really good shots and holed some nice putts early in the round, and that really helped boost the confidence. “I’m out here on the putting green hitting putts next to my heroes, and I have a great support team here. Overall, the game was enjoying a spike in popularity akin to when Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson helped drive the sport decades prior, and this resurgence pushed demand for the few available tickets to an all-time high.

2022 PGA Championship: Latest betting odds, favorites and sleeper ... (Sports Illustrated)

The world's best professionals arrive in Tulsa for the second major of the year. Here are your best bets for the week.

For a sleeper, we are going back to Cameron Young at +7000. The last time we picked him, he finished T-2 at the Wells Fargo Championship to continue the blistering start to his career. Southern Hills will force players to be precise on their second shots and if Fitzpatrick can utilize his strong iron play, he’ll be right there in contention as he normally has been this year. They say, “defense wins championships.” Well, putting wins majors and this week shapes up to be all the right ingredients for Cantlay’s first. Contenders are going to be long off the tee here, but those who can find the fairway more often will have the largest advantage. Woods will be in the field but defending champion Phil Mickelson will not. We now head just a few hours north for the second major of the season, the PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa. This will be the first time the club has hosted the PGA since Tiger Woods won in 2007.
