NY Rangers defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 7 with a 4-3 score in overtime, winning first-round playoff series.

The Rangers were able to rally from a 3-1 series deficit and ward off elimination twice throughout the playoff series. This Rangers team became just the third in franchise history to overcome a 3-1 series deficit, and is the first to reach Round 2 since they did so in the 2016-17 season. The NY Rangers Artemi Panerin scored the winning overtime goal to bring the Rangers to a 4-3 Game 7 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, winning the first-round of the Stanley Cup playoff series.

Penguins blame series loss to Rangers on helmet rule: 'It stinks ... (Forever Blueshirts)

The Penguins are really blaming the "helmet rule" for losing the series to the New York Rangers.

The New York Rangers are advancing to Round 2 because they fought for and deserved it. He did not HAVE TO come off meaning the loss is fully on them. I’ve reviewed it myself several times and the on-ice result had nothing to do with Pettersson’s helmet coming off. As the players went down, Lafrenière’s arm was up around Pettersson’s head causing the helmet to come off. A player on the ice whose helmet comes off during play shall be assessed a minor penalty if he does not exit the playing surface, or retrieve and replace his helmet properly on his head (with or without his chin strap fastened), within a reasonable period of time. Alexis Lafrenière and Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson got tangled up behind the Pittsburgh goal.

Sidney Crosby blasts NHL's 'terrible' helmet rule after Penguins ... (New York Post)

Sidney Crosby believes the NHL's "terrible" helmet rule played a role in the Penguins' 4-3 overtime loss to the Rangers in Game 7 on Sunday.

We didn’t get that next one tonight, that probably was the difference, but I think even when we had those leads we still played the right way.” I think that he loses his helmet, he comes back to the net and he plays a guy out front, I think that’s a nothing play.” “I don’t know, I think we played the right way,” Crosby said. “I think if you look at Game 5, we had a tough span of a few minutes and Game 6 probably an even shorter span than that when they got back in the game. “I think it stinks,” Sullivan said. I think that’s a rule made by the NHL that could be changed,” Jarry said.

Hey stupid, you should have put your helmet back on (Bluelinestation.com)

Here's what happened. Alexis Lefrenière was pursuing the puck behind the net when he came in contact with Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson. They both went ...

The helmet rule is the dumbest rule in hockey. Instead of whining about a missed call, the Pittsburgh Penguins should look at themselves and maybe they should create a summer reading list for their players that includes the NHL rulebook. The fact remains that the Penguins had two two-goal leads in consecutive elimination games and blew them both. What’s ironic is that the Penguins were victimized on a similar play against the Islanders last season in the playoffs. Of course, the idiots have to weigh in. Fourth, count the number of Penguins on the ice when the goal is scored. It’s sad that Sullivan had to take the low road after the game. He could have put the helmet back on. There are five Penguins on the ice and no less than three between Zibanejad and the goal. That’s why he had to go to the bench. Pettersson should have put his helmet back on…instead of complaining to the refs. They kept the puck in the Pittsburgh zone and Mika Zibanejad scored the tying goal.

Round Two Preview: Canes vs. Rangers (BlueJackets.com)

RALEIGH, NC. - The Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers are set to go head-to-head for the first time ever in a seven-game series in the Stanley Cup ...

In addition to Fox and Kreider, Game 7 hero Artemi Panerin and Mika Zibanejad, who had seven points in the final two games of the series against Pittsburgh, always pose a threat when they are on the ice. If Jordan Staal's line is once again tasked with shutting down New York's top line on home ice, how will the Rangers handle the line anchored by Vincent Trocheck, who combined for 19 points during Round One? Will their remaining forward options be able to compete against a trio of Andrei Svechnikov, Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis? "I think the first round is the toughest, physically and emotionally. The valiant performances also came after suffering a lower-body injury during the final week of the regular season, then being run over by David Pastrnak in Game Two, forcing him out of the contest and causing him to miss Game Three. However, Shesterkin ran into some trouble against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Round One. The 26-year-old allowed 25 goals in the seven games, an average of 3.66 goals against. Andersen has been out of the lineup since suffering a lower-body injury on Saturday, April 16 against the Colorado Avalanche and has yet to take part in a practice with the team. The Canes ability to remain disciplined will be tested to an even greater level during this series. In two of the games he was pulled in favor of Alexandar Georgiev. They're a really good team. "They're a good team. During the regular season they converted at a 25.2% rate, fourth among all teams. While several overtime contests aided Fox's time on ice to above 28 minutes per night, Slavin led Carolina with an average of 23:02 in Round One.

Bubble sweep by Hurricanes means nothing to the Rangers now (New York Post)

Before this postseason began, the Rangers fielded lots of questions about the 2020 bubble playoffs, where they were swept in the qualifying round in three ...

“I think when we’re ready to play, we’re as good a team as anybody in this league and we’ve proven that. Brady Skjei, meanwhile, faced his former team in the bubble after being traded to Carolina mid-season and injured Fast with a big hit in Game 1. We just beat a hell of a good Pittsburgh team, I know they had some injuries, but we beat a hell of a good team and we found ways to win in battles. Rangers head coach Gerard Gallant was relieved of his coaching duties in Vegas in January 2020, two months before COVID-19 brought the sports world to a halt. With no fans in the building, it’s a different game, I think. After the Rangers’ triple-overtime loss to the Penguins in Game 1 of Round 1, Fox said he considered that to be his first-ever playoff contest.

2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs: Hurricanes vs. Rangers second-round ... (NHL.com)

NHL.com previews the Eastern Conference Second Round between the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers.

Hurricanes: Vincent Trocheck had seven points (three goals, four assists) in the first round against the Bruins. Carolina's second-line center had three of them on the power play, all assists. New York averaged the fourth-most shots on goal per game in the first round (38.6) but allowed the most (44.3). He rebounded with three straight wins to finish the series with a .910 save percentage, .917 in Games 5-7 (nine goals on 108 shots). Aho was limited to two assists in the last five games against the Bruins but could be due for a breakout in the second round based on his playoff history. Carolina thrives on its ability to play north, apply pressure, smother opponents and sustain puck possession time in the offensive zone. Rangers: Shesterkin was busier in the first round than any Rangers goalie in history. The Rangers weren't in position to make the playoffs when the 2019-20 season was paused due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. Georgiev is only expected to play in this series if Igor Shesterkin is pulled from a game, like he was twice in the first round, or if he is injured. They went to Toronto because the NHL extended the playoff field to the top 12 teams in each conference. Those games were played without fans in attendance at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. The Hurricanes were coming off a trip to the conference final in 2019. The Rangers also needed seven games to eliminate the Pittsburgh Penguins, coming back from 3-1 down in the best-of-7 series. The only one New York won was 2-0 on March 20, when Carolina had a 44-18 advantage in shots on goal and were shut out by backup goalie Alexandar Georgiev.

Canes Announce Second Round Schedule (BlueJackets.com)

The Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers will begin their best-of-seven series Wednesday night at PNC Arena.

TBD TBD The two teams previously met in the 2020 Eastern Conference Qualifying Round, as the Hurricanes earned a three-game sweep of the Rangers at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. Carolina posted a 3-1-0 record against New York during the 2021-22 regular season.

When does the Hurricanes-Rangers Stanley Cup playoff series start ... (Charlotte Observer)

Carolina Hurricanes vs New York Rangers second round of NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. Who are Hurricanes playing? When do Hurricanes play?

He directs the team in a north-south game, similar to how the Canes run. His style has fit the Rangers’ roster perfectly, and he led them to a 52-win season. Fox, who tied for second in the league with 33 power-play assists, plays a role for them similar to DeAngelo in Carolina, and Panarin is deadly, too, with 32 power-play assists of his own — and the game-winner with the extra skater in overtime in Game 7. But this is one position at which, again, on paper, the Rangers have an advantage. In the Rangers’ final 14 games, they were just 6-for-37 on power-play opportunities. The Rangers’ best goaltending performance against Carolina this season was by Georgiev, who had a 44-save shutout in Raleigh. But early in the series against the Penguins, he looked not only mortal, but downright bad, getting outdueled in a score-fest by Pens’ third-stringer Louis Domingue. Much like the Canes’ Tony DeAngelo, Fox is a creative defender and a high octane offensive threat. The Rangers also feature what many refer to as “the kid line”: Alexis Lafreniere, 20, Filip Chytil, 22, and Kaapo Kakko, 21. Sure, each player has a bent toward offense or defense from the blue line, but all four of the Rangers’ top defenders can manage assignments against the top lines from opposing teams. Trailing by a goal in the third period, Mika Zibenajad scored to send the game into overtime, and Artemi Panarin finished on a power play in the extra session to lift the Rangers over the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-3, in Game 7 of their first-round series. Back in early February, the Canes had a large advantage in the division, but the hot-shooting Rangers, led by a strong if unexpected season from Chris Kreider and elite Vezina Trophy caliber goaltending from Igor Shesterkin, caught up.

Zach Wilson goes crazy celebrating epic Rangers Game 7 win (New York Post)

The Rangers' biggest fan on Sunday night may have been Jets quarterback Zach Wilson.

He also assisted on Panarin’s game winner in the overtime period. Per Wilson’s Instagram story, the two appeared to grab dinner before the game. In Game 7, Pittsburgh held a 3-2 lead late into the third period, until Mika Zibenajad tied the game up with a late goal.

Rangers' most-important stars riding into Hurricanes series red-hot (New York Post)

Mika Zibanejad gave a small shrug of his shoulder, then grinned. The Rangers center had just been asked about his production in Games 6 and 7 against the ...

Things will not get easier against the Hurricanes, who can dictate play with a hard forecheck and straight-line hockey. “You still gotta play your game. To hear Gallant tell it, they just need to be themselves — and the messaging has trickled down. I thought we did a better job focusing on ourselves.” We talk about being the better defensive team and sometimes you get away from your own game. “When they look like they’re having a tough game, they’re trying to probably play a little bit more defense. And I think when Mika starts to play his game, he was outstanding. And that’s what we want him to do.” He’s Mr. Reliable back there,” Jacob Trouba said Sunday night of Shesterkin, a far cry from earlier in the series, when Rangers coach Gerard Gallant had to make clear that he would indeed be sticking with the same starter in nets. “I didn’t feel like I did anything differently in terms of shooting the puck. Of course, it is not that simple — not when Sidney Crosby’s line was such a factor in the series. Shesterkin was chased from Games 3 and 4, looking like a shell of himself.
