Is Faster Always Better for Commercial Air Travel? - FLYING Magazine (Flying Magazine)

Rising aviation industry interest in supersonic and hypersonic aircraft is prompting NASA to evaluate the technological and economic viability of commercial ...

When talking about the economics of high-speed commercial airlines, it’s hard not to think about the Concorde built by Aérospatiale/BAC, in service from 1976 to 2003. SpaceWorks says its experience has shown that “when you look at this problem from a commercial perspective, a faster or bigger aircraft is not always better,” as Bradford put it. SpaceWorks aims to study the market to help NASA to gain a deeper understanding “of the potential public benefits that might exist here,” said the company’s CTO Dr. John Bradford in the release. The company folded in 2021 citing lack of funds. Specifically, the company will evaluate “design drivers such as flight speed, operational range, passenger count, fuel type, ticket price, and fleet size. In Denver, a 65- to 88-passenger supersonic jet is currently being developed by United Airlines-backed Boom Supersonic. In Texas, a Houston company called Venus just announced it’s working on a hypersonic space plane for 12 passengers.

NASA gave their Low-Boom Flight Demonstration mission a brand new name: Quesst, named after the Quiet SuperSonic Technology that makes it all possible.

The thunderous sonic boom associated with these planes was one of the reasons the U.S. government banned all supersonic flights overland. Along with a new name for the project, NASA also announced a new identity for the mission with an entirely new logo in blue and green colors. In an official blog post, NASA announced that it is changing the name of the project from "Low-Boom Flight Demonstration" to the much simpler "Quesst."

Perseverance: Nasa rover begins key drive to find life on Mars (BBC News)

The Perseverance robot climbs a slope that could record evidence of ancient Martian biology.

These ventures, which will incorporate another rover, a Mars rocket and carrier spacecraft, should be launched towards the end of this decade. "I don't think that the instruments we have by themselves can provide that level of proof. And so the proof needs to be enormous as well," said Jennifer Trosper, Nasa's Perseverance project manager. It's unlikely the robot itself will be able to make any definitive statements - as smart as its instruments are. Perseverance will go "walkabout", looking for the most enticing delta rock. The sudden deceleration that occurs in the river's flow allows anything carried in suspension to fall out.

NASA, Air Liquide continue working on Artemis 1 WDR issues ... (NASASpaceflight.com)

The vehicle and Mobile Launcher were rolled back to the VAB to work their issues in parallel with Air Liquide's repairs and upgrades, which are now required ...

“Our technical management team has worked with Air Liquide and our facility management director here to develop test procedures that will allow us to exercise the system in a way that will basically stress it more than we would expect during our WDR and launch campaign,” Lanham said during a May 5 media teleconference. The leak was detected inside a “purge can” that enclosed the main hydrogen fluid lines that run into and out of the Core Stage. The tail service masts are one of the few areas that can be serviced at the pad, so it’s possible that the bolts could have been retightened out at Pad 39B for another Wet Dress Rehearsal attempt instead of rolling back to the VAB first. “We’ll go implement the final outcome of the engineering boards and the review boards in terms of exactly what we’re going to do we’re waiting for now and then we’re hoping to pick that work up early next week (week of May 16).” Future plans are to verify the torque on the bolts more frequently, but Lanham noted “we won’t know if we fixed the problem until we get out there,” when the team repeats the LH2 propellant loading sequence next time out at the pad. “They found particulate in the check valve; that was what was holding the check valve open,” Lanham said. Engineers are also troubleshooting outside air that is leaking into one of the connections from the umbilical to the ICPS.) A check valve in the gaseous helium system on the ICPS had also stopped functioning correctly between the second attempt on April 4 and the third on April 14. The GN2 purge supply necessary to allow the vehicle to be loaded with propellant was lost on both tanking attempts in April and a 32-hour long test at the high SLS flow rates was planned to begin on May 16 to demonstrate the effectiveness of repairs and upgrades at the Air Liquide plant. The vehicle and Mobile Launcher were rolled back to the VAB to work their issues in parallel with Air Liquide’s repairs and upgrades, which are now required before the SLS rocket can be completed fueled. A series of issues were discovered during three attempts to perform the Wet Dress Rehearsal (WDR) while the Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System (SLS) rocket were out at Launch Pad 39B. Crawler Transporter 2 returned the Orion/SLS vehicle and Mobile Launcher-1 to High Bay 3 of the VAB early on the morning of April 26.

Did NASA's Mars Rover Really Find A Doorway On The Red Planet? (Screen Rant)

While exploring Mars for ancient life, NASA's Curiosity rover found something interesting: a rock formation that looks just like an alien doorway.

Speaking to Live Science, geologist Neil Hodgson theorizes that the Mars doorway is the result of erosion on the Red Planet. Hodgson believes that the rock making up the outer part of the doorway is strata — 'harder sandy beds' that may have formed in an ancient river. It's one of the closest planets to Earth, was once home to ancient lakes, and has recorded evidence of carbon on the planet — one of the key building blocks for life. While the whole thing looks like something Mars aliens may have constructed millions of years ago, the reality of the 'doorway' isn't nearly as exciting. Uranus is the only planet in the Solar System to spin on its side. Most recently, the internet is raving over a new Curiosity photo that appears to reveal an alien 'doorway' on Mars. Although it's a minuscule speck compared to the entirety of the universe, our Solar System is home to all kinds of mysteries.

Mars Curiosity Rover Snaps Photo of 'Doorway' on Mars (PetaPixel)

NASA's Mars Curiosity rover captured a photo of what looks like a carved doorway that leads somewhere into the depths of the Red Planet.

“This object pierced through the winding of the skyline, like a ‘mysterious hut’ that appeared out of thin air. According to experts, what is likely happening here is the human brain’s tendency to see familiar shapes when looking at unfamiliar environments. The fractures we see in this area are generally vertical.

Earlier this month NASA also published an image from its Odyssey orbiter, which has been at Mars for over 20 years. In fact, it’s most likely the result of natural erosion. It measured the marsquake at magnitude 5. That was until a few days ago when Curiosity discovered what looks like an “alien doorway” in the Mount Sharp region it’s exploring. This image was constructed by citizen scientist Neville Thompson. However, look more closely and you can see the back of the gap.

While scientists said this ancient river delta may be the best place for the rover to look for signs of life, they also need to be picky because Perseverance has only 43 sampling tubes for collection. Scientists had predicted the area may have once been home to a river delta flooded with water and a possible location for the Perseverance rover to look for signs of ancient microbial life once it landed in February 2021.

Mysterious doorway found on Mars isn't an alien's house, say killjoy ... (PC Gamer)

A mysterious doorway on Mars photographed by NASA's Curiosity rover last week is nothing to get excited about, say a bunch of expert geologists, ...

Late last year China's Yutu 2 rover spotted what looked like a cube on the moon, which we speculated could be anything from Spelunky 2's robot to Crota from Destiny, but it just turned out to just be a rock that wasn't even vaguely cube-shaped. While you'd hope NASA would continue to investigate the doorway, at least by making the rover drive through it to see what's in there—it actually can't. First of all, the doorway is smaller than it looks in the pictures, standing less than a meter tall (the Curiosity rover is about 2.2 meters tall). Second, if you zoom in on the images you can see there's actually no interior. Fractures in the rock and thermal stress may have caused a hunk of stone to simply fall away, leaving a gap that just looks like a doorway.
