According to a post on the Maggie Peterson Facebook page, Peterson died in her sleep with her family present. The post went on to say that Maggie’s health took a turn for the worse after the death of her husband. Maggie Peterson, known for her role as Charlene Darling, of a bluegrass-loving family, on The Andy Griffith Show, has died. She was 81.

In 1964, Peterson joined NBC’s The Bill Dana Show — which like The Andy Griffith Show was a spinoff from Danny Thomas’ Make Room for Daddy — as Susie the coffee shop waitress for that sitcom’s second and final season. Peterson died Sunday in Colorado, her family announced. The death of Maggie Peterson Mancuso, who acted and sang with bluegrass group The Dillards on The Andy Griffith Show TV program, was announced by family.

There she was discovered by Andy Griffith’s manager Dick Linke, and director Bob Sweeney and producer Aaron Ruben, who developed The Andy Griffith Show. Born Margaret Ann Peterson on January 10, 1941, in Greeley, Colorado, Peterson, her brother and two of his friends formed a small group called the Ja-Da Quartet in the 1950s that rode around on a pickup truck singing to people.
