Brentford's Ivan Toney and Rico Henry said their families were subject to racial abuse during Sunday's Premier League clash vs. Everton.

Everton said they were working with authorities to track down those responsible. Brentford said they were aware of the incidents and a report had been made to the police. "I never usually speak out on things that don't physically harm me or my family," Henry said.

Ref Watch: Should Everton have had another penalty vs Brentford ... (Sky Sports)

Should Tottenham have been awarded their penalty for a handball by Burnley striker Ashley Barnes? Did Gabriel Jesus deserve a penalty when Kurt Zouma made ...

The directives this season is that if it's shoulder height or above and it's away from the body, then [it's] a penalty [and they have] been given all season. The connection is made because Zouma is trying to block the ball, Jesus is spinning his body round and he's already going backwards with his feet. When anybody pulls a shirt they are taking a massive risk, but the ref felt Ajer was being pulled as well. Ironically, if they go back and give the penalty, Branthwaite would have stayed on the field. I would suggest that if Michael Oliver gave this as a penalty, the VAR would go with him. And would it have meant Braithwaite remained on the pitch?

Everton: Frank Lampard team decision indicates £16 million man's ... (Prince Rupert's Tower)

Everton boss Frank Lampard did not start Allan against Brentford in absence of Fabian Delph indicating perhaps the Brazilian may have an uncertain future.

His tackles and interceptions could break up the play and give Everton a fair chance on the counter. Lately, Allan was reduced to a bits and parts role as Delph remained Everton’s prime defensive midfielder, running the show in the midfield. Fabian Delph was ruled out after picking up an injury against Watford. The Englishman had become the backbone of the side in the relegation battle.

Joe Thomas with five moments you might have missed as Everton were beaten by Brentford in the Premier League.

It was an out-of-character moment for the striker, who will miss the rest of the season through suspension. My apologies from the bottom of my heart to the whole Everton family.” This happened after Richarlison's penalty as well - both incidents leading to a steward having to carry off the items in a special crate that was repeatedly featured on the Match of the Day highlights. Things looked far rosier on the hour mark than they did four minutes later, by which time Brentford had not just equalised but then gone on to take the lead. He was then involved in an off-the-ball row with Toney after Brentford initially refused to kick the ball out when Richarlison appeared to need treatment. His two penalties against Burnley were calmly tucked away despite it being a relegation six-pointer and, on Sunday, the chance to give Everton a lead to protect with their 10 men came amid huge pressure.

The VAR Review: Barnes handball, penalties for Richarlison, Jesus (ESPN)

We take a look at the weekend's big VAR talking points, with a host of penalty decisions taking centre stage.

VAR review: This was a simple VAR decision. But as well as being a case of clear and obvious, the other important consideration is the change in application explained by PGMOL boss Mike Riley at the start of the season. In Sorensen's case, that would have been the second caution and therefore a red anyway. If the VAR had advised there should be a penalty to Everton, then the red card to Branthwaite would have been cancelled. Of course, intent isn't relevant with Zouma on Jesus either, but it's the consequence of the contact that is important. Unfortunately for the 19-year-old, that he didn't mean to foul Ivan Toney doesn't matter where a red card for DOGSO is concerned. As for the red card to Branthwaite, the VAR checked that the dismissal was correct but it was never going to get overturned. Of course, not every foul leading to a penalty should be a yellow card, but Sorensen was fortunate. If the VAR believes this description fits the replays, he will not advise the referee he has made a mistake. Also, it was decided there was no mistake in showing the red card to Branthwaite for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (DOGSO). What happened: The score was goalless when Ashley Barnes and Davinson Sanchez challenged for a bouncing ball. VAR review: Taken in isolation, it's doubtful that the Richarlison incident would have been talked about quite so much.

Liverpool could get unexpected boost from Everton twist as parallel ... (Liverpool.com)

Everton are still favourite to avoid the drop despite a Premier League setback. Liverpool fans may be disappointed, but they could be in line for a boot.

For as long as the Reds are on top, it is in the best interests of both clubs that Everton remain in England's top flight, with Klopp completely transforming Liverpool's fate since the day he arrived in October 2015. Everton have a long journey ahead of them to close the gap, one which looks insurmountable. And Everton won't fare any better as the Reds continue to improve, especially with Lampard — who has lost five of six games to Klopp as a manager.
