Penguins loss to Rangers was a missed opportunity (PensBurgh)

The Pittsburgh Penguins had the series won and let it slip away.

From 2006-07 on the Penguins have been the most successful organization in hockey, regular season and playoffs, and exceeded every expectation that anybody could have possibly had for them when this era began. They were good enough to get the lead in those games, they were good enough to mostly outplay the Rangers, and they should have been expected to be good enough to close out those games. John Marino blindly throwing the puck to the middle of the ice with a one-goal lead late in Game 7. If he had given the Penguins that level of play, a level of play that he has demonstrated he is capable of, in his five starts, they win the series in five games. Brock McGinn’s turnover at the blue line that resulted in his penalty that created the power play that won the game. Evan Rodrigues’ retaliation penalty in Game 6 when the game (and series) was in complete control. After having one of the best penalty killing units in the league during the regular season that unit completely imploded on itself in the playoffs. Given how bad they were in the series it was fitting, then, that this unit was on the ice to end the series. They did a fantastic job insulating him and were asking for the routine. The guy has played 150 games in the NHL and has had varying degrees of success. They had the Rangers completely buried with two-goal leads in Games 5 and 6, and a lead with less than six minutes to play in Game 7. The Penguins’ 4-3 overtime loss on Sunday night capped off an historic collapse in which the Penguins not only lost a 3-1 series lead, but blew leads in all three games to close out the series.

When does the Hurricanes-Rangers Stanley Cup playoff series start ... (Raleigh News & Observer)

Carolina Hurricanes vs New York Rangers second round of NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. Who are Hurricanes playing? When do Hurricanes play?

He directs the team in a north-south game, similar to how the Canes run. His style has fit the Rangers’ roster perfectly, and he led them to a 52-win season. Fox, who tied for second in the league with 33 power-play assists, plays a role for them similar to DeAngelo in Carolina, and Panarin is deadly, too, with 32 power-play assists of his own — and the game-winner with the extra skater in overtime in Game 7. But this is one position at which, again, on paper, the Rangers have an advantage. In the Rangers’ final 14 games, they were just 6-for-37 on power-play opportunities. The Rangers’ best goaltending performance against Carolina this season was by Georgiev, who had a 44-save shutout in Raleigh. But early in the series against the Penguins, he looked not only mortal, but downright bad, getting outdueled in a score-fest by Pens’ third-stringer Louis Domingue. Much like the Canes’ Tony DeAngelo, Fox is a creative defender and a high octane offensive threat. The Rangers also feature what many refer to as “the kid line”: Alexis Lafreniere, 20, Filip Chytil, 22, and Kaapo Kakko, 21. Sure, each player has a bent toward offense or defense from the blue line, but all four of the Rangers’ top defenders can manage assignments against the top lines from opposing teams. Trailing by a goal in the third period, Mika Zibenajad scored to send the game into overtime, and Artemi Panarin finished on a power play in the extra session to lift the Rangers over the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-3, in Game 7 of their first-round series. Back in early February, the Canes had a large advantage in the division, but the hot-shooting Rangers, led by a strong if unexpected season from Chris Kreider and elite Vezina Trophy caliber goaltending from Igor Shesterkin, caught up.

Domingue played admirably, but the Penguins had three chances to eliminate the Rangers in Games 5, 6 and 7, and they blew leads in each of those three games and goaltending was part of the problem. The Rangers showed a remarkable ability to come back, but this particular comeback effort was not without controversy. To make matters worse, the goalie whose shadow Jarry was still in—Marc Andre-Fleury—won a Vezina Trophy with the Vegas Golden Knights. An anxious MSG crowd was expecting the end. "They're generational players, and Pittsburgh has been lucky enough to have three of them for the last 15 years," goalie Tristan Jarry said. They all entered the league within a year of one another as heralded rookies, and they lived up to the billing. Former general manager Ray Shero and former head coach Dan Bylsma have their names etched on that 2009 trophy, but it was Jim Rutherford and Mike Sullivan who had taken their places by the time they won back-to-back Cups in 2016 and 2017. "I think it stinks," Sullivan said. This series might have been different had he not been injured for the first six games. Jarry has solidified his place in the organization's future. "But it's something in the back of your mind. By the time they're at their most dangerous, the club will have a wide-open championship window.

The only way the Rangers win this series is if he’s lights-out, which he more than likely will be. The stars have to be able to make a bigger difference this time around. I would argue that the Bruins were a worse matchup for the Canes than the Rangers are, but you can’t count out this New York squad. PNC Arena will be rocking once again but betting on going 4-0 in that building again to win the series seems unsustainable. The Canes of course easily took that series in three games but this series will not be nearly as easy. Throughout the series against the Bruins, the powerplay was oftentimes too stationary and failed to generate enough good chances.

Evan Rodrigues disrupted the New York power play for an unassisted breakaway goal. The Penguins felt they deserved better. The Penguins PK could not hang on, and when the red lights behind Tristan Jarry, it was over. The Penguins had 13 high-danger chances compared to just five for the Rangers.

NY Rangers defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 7 with a 4-3 score in overtime, winning first-round playoff series.

The Rangers were able to rally from a 3-1 series deficit and ward off elimination twice throughout the playoff series. This Rangers team became just the third in franchise history to overcome a 3-1 series deficit, and is the first to reach Round 2 since they did so in the 2016-17 season. The NY Rangers Artemi Panerin scored the winning overtime goal to bring the Rangers to a 4-3 Game 7 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, winning the first-round of the Stanley Cup playoff series.

Stanley Cup Playoffs Round 2 Preview: Hurricanes vs. Rangers (Sportsnet.ca)

They were the league’s best in that regard, putting up a ridiculous +76 goal differential in the process as Raanta and starter Frederik Andersen won the William Jennings. But now Andersen is on the sidelines, and the team’s success will rise and fall with dutiful backup Raanta. He did all that was asked of him through Round 1, putting up a dominant .927 save percentage in the six games he played (young Pyotr Kochetkov had to check in for one tilt after a collision forced Raanta to the sidelines too). If he can keep rolling, the Canes have enough dotted throughout the rest of their roster to push this run forward. As was the case with the Canes’ first-round battle, and as will likely be the case for this whole run, it all comes down to Raanta. Crucial to the Canes’ success this season, as they finished as division champs for the second straight year, was their ability to keep pucks out of the net. If the Rangers faithful are looking for reason to worry heading into this second-round series — here’s one: In every game New York played against the Canes this season, the Rangers’ star sniper, Kreider, scored a goal. While Crosby, Rakell and starter Tristan Jarry all returned for the do-or-die Game 7, it wasn’t enough to slow the Rangers — particularly Zibanejad, who’d found his game once he was able to escape the matchup with Crosby, and kept it rolling after No. 87 returned by scoring a crucial tying goal late in the series finale. Playing a brutally hard-nosed game from the opening puck-drop to the final whistle, they tilted the series with physicality before their skill caught up with them and their goaltender found his game. Amid the chaos of that roster turnstyle, New York stole two games back, keeping their season alive and putting the Penguins on the back foot. It was a wild, wild ride that delivered the Rangers to the second round. And then the veteran Bruins turned around and did the same to them in Games 3 and 4, taking both and outscoring Carolina 10-4. The Canes and Rangers have crossed paths just once in the playoffs before, but you don’t have to dig too far to find that lone bit of history. That’s a good sign for Carolina, whose offensive success has come from all corners of the lineup so far — something they’ll need to continue if they want to keep Igor Shesterkin looking human in these playoffs. Heading into the post-season without their No. 1 netminder, then temporarily losing their No. 2 — a la their current foe’s first-round opponent — Carolina continued to push forward and made it out alive. In Raleigh, the Canes have simply kept building on momentum that’s been picking up steam year over year, the club continuing to add talent and roll forward.

Penguins blame series loss to Rangers on helmet rule: 'It stinks ... (Forever Blueshirts)

The Penguins are really blaming the "helmet rule" for losing the series to the New York Rangers.

The New York Rangers are advancing to Round 2 because they fought for and deserved it. He did not HAVE TO come off meaning the loss is fully on them. I’ve reviewed it myself several times and the on-ice result had nothing to do with Pettersson’s helmet coming off. As the players went down, Lafrenière’s arm was up around Pettersson’s head causing the helmet to come off. A player on the ice whose helmet comes off during play shall be assessed a minor penalty if he does not exit the playing surface, or retrieve and replace his helmet properly on his head (with or without his chin strap fastened), within a reasonable period of time. Alexis Lafrenière and Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson got tangled up behind the Pittsburgh goal.

Penguins/Rangers aftermath: Pens find new way to same destination (PensBurgh)

It wasn’t for a lack of effort or willingness to lay it on the line. Pittsburgh’s downfall was a predictable result — and perhaps inevitable — when dealing with the talent differences on both ends of the ice. On the surface, squandering a 3 games to 1 series lead can be confusing and angering. Game 2, for instance, was just as impactful as any contest, and one that possibly could have gone a different way if Igor Shesterkin wasn’t excellent and Pittsburgh got better goaltending. The Pens scored 25 goals in seven games on Shesterkin, which is both impressive and confounding at the same time. Just disappointing to think about that we had a lead in each game and gave that away.

Hey stupid, you should have put your helmet back on (Bluelinestation.com)

Here's what happened. Alexis Lefrenière was pursuing the puck behind the net when he came in contact with Penguins defenseman Marcus Pettersson. They both went ...

The helmet rule is the dumbest rule in hockey. Instead of whining about a missed call, the Pittsburgh Penguins should look at themselves and maybe they should create a summer reading list for their players that includes the NHL rulebook. The fact remains that the Penguins had two two-goal leads in consecutive elimination games and blew them both. What’s ironic is that the Penguins were victimized on a similar play against the Islanders last season in the playoffs. Of course, the idiots have to weigh in. Fourth, count the number of Penguins on the ice when the goal is scored. It’s sad that Sullivan had to take the low road after the game. He could have put the helmet back on. There are five Penguins on the ice and no less than three between Zibanejad and the goal. That’s why he had to go to the bench. Pettersson should have put his helmet back on…instead of complaining to the refs. They kept the puck in the Pittsburgh zone and Mika Zibanejad scored the tying goal.

Sure, there's the lofty numbers, including a career-high 52 shots that found the back of the net during the recently completed 2021-22 regular season.

I still find it ludicrous that the franchise hasn’t had a captain since trading former defenseman Ryan McDonagh to two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay in 2018. He’s not afraid to get in someone’s grill if they mess with a teammate. I mean, when you’re tied with the iconic Mark Messier for the second most playoff goals in franchise history, you must be doing something right, right?
