The Penguins' hopes boil down to Tristan Jarry (PensBurgh)

It's a lot to ask for a goalie to come back from an injury and shine in Game 7...But that's what the Pens need.

It’s the biggest question that could hold the key to the series — and season — for the Penguins. Coming into the series, not too many people liked the Pens’ chances, even if they had Jarry (..and Crosby...and Dumoulin..and Rickard Rakell). Yet they’ve battled and brought it to a Game 7. Kreider only had two goals in the first five games of the series, after pumping in a career-high 52 in the regular season. However, the Pens have still been the stronger of the two teams for the majority of the series. The Rangers finally did that in Game 6, with star players in Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad finally stepping up and taking advantage. Unfortunately for Domingue and the Penguins, the health and time needed to get Tristan Jarry back has not allowed for a quick conclusion to the feel good story.

“We had plenty of opportunities to finish the game and finish the series,” Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said. He trails only Jari Kurri and Mark Messier for the most in a series in franchise history. Included in that span are some colossal collapses, including a 2013 Game 7 loss to Boston in which the Leafs blew a 4-1 lead with 11 minutes left in regulation. “That was not the kind of game we expected to play. “He has done a great job since arriving in Vancouver and we are eager to see the team continue to perform under his leadership as they did during the second half of the season.” With nine points, Crosby leads all scorers in the series and is tied for fourth in the playoffs. We’re going to do everything we can and I can’t wait to get on the ice.” Carolina won Game 5 to retake momentum but was unable to eliminate the Bruins on Thursday night. “I was really nervous and I didn’t like to keep the Canucks waiting for my decision,” he said. Boudreau’s hiring made an immediate impact as he became just the third coach in NHL history to win his first seven games with a new team. Florida looked to be on the verge of a regulation victory when Gustav Forsling tripped Nicklas Backstrom with 1:09 left. Igor Shesterkin stopped 31 shots to win at PPG Paints Arena for the first time this series after getting chased by Pittsburgh in Games 3 and 4.

The road map has been laid for the Penguins to find success in Game 7. Crosby has been able to stop the Rangers momentum with long shifts in the offensive zone that turn the tide of a period. Penguins starting goaltender Tristan Jarry was ruled out for Game 6 early in the day. It may not seem like it, but the Penguins outperformed the Rangers at even strength in that period. The Pittsburgh Penguins lost 5-3 in Game 6, forcing a Game 7 at Madison Square Garden. The bad news, is the Penguins have had two chances to finish off the Rangers and have failed both times. The problem for the Penguins in these elimination games has all come after the opening frame.

Four of the six games of this series have featured teams blowing leads of at least two goals. Of special note is that the Penguins have not been credited with even one shorthanded scoring chance. But at minus-0.7, he still was “under water,” and in getting far out-played by his counterpart (the Montreal Canadiens’ Carey Price was a plus-9.6) once again provides an example of goaltending providing the Penguins’ biggest postseason problem. That year, at least, Murray was good (1.9 goals saved above expected) – but New York’s Robin Lehner was spectacular (plus-6.1) Chris Kreider’s winner with 1 minute, 28 seconds left in Game 6 on Friday night was soft enough that the spotlight needs affixed to Louis Domingue’s play during this series. But recent Penguins playoff flameouts have one thing in common: losing the goaltending battle.

The Penguins held the practice at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex before flying to New York for a Game 7 showdown Sunday in their first-round series. Goaltender Tristan Jarry was the first player on the ice and continues to look as if his return could be imminent. How about this: Sidney Crosby was on the ice, and he was not wearing a non-contact jersey.

Dealing with the possible end of a season has affected Sullivan’s teams differently in recent years. Still, Jarry seemed to be a full participant in Saturday’s practice and actually moved quite well from side-to-side. The finality of a Game 7 isn’t exclusive to players either, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan insisted. “Sometimes there’s a lot of pressure when you have a Game 7 at home,” Carter said. Sullivan’s perspective on the matter is also likely framed by the success he’s experienced in this setting. Same as the win-or-go-home nature making Game 7s must-watch TV, Carter probably likes these special events because he’s fared extremely well in them.

If you go in with the right mindset and you leave it all out there, most of the time you're gonna come out on top. The past week has been a rollercoaster for not just Penguins fans living and dying with each game, but for everybody in that locker room as well. "That's the nature of playoff hockey. "They're obviously on the ice, that's encouraging. "He's in good spirits," head coach Mike Sullivan said.

Return of Sidney Crosby buoys Penguins heading into Game 7 (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Sidney Crosby returned from what appeared to be a head injury on Saturday, as the Penguins practiced at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.

"The Crosby line in the beginning, up until Sid got hurt, was dominant, regardless of who they were out against," Sullivan said. "That’s certainly a boost for our guys." Sullivan said Crosby skated on his own Friday morning and “was in a good place.” Might be the only way, really. The five-on-five play from our standpoint was really strong. Meanwhile, his two-way prowess could really come in handy considering Rangers coach Gerard Gallant once again gets the last change. Yet for Penguins fans near and far, there’s arguably nothing more meaningful than Crosby returning to the Garden one last time this season. Crosby thrives in these moments. They’re obviously on the ice. It wasn't a burly defenseman burying him into the boards, but it wasn't nothing, either. He’s doing his very best to get himself back and ready as quickly as he can. He's day-to-day and will travel to New York, nothing more.

Crosby was knocked out of Game 5 and the Rangers have won the last two games, facing elimination.

He has also been an important counter to the Rangers' scoring trio of Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider and Frank Vatrano, as the Penguins have outscored them 4-0 in five-on-five play when Crosby has been on the ice. In seven career Game 7s, Crosby has two goals and three assists. Crosby suffered his concussion early in the second period of Wednesday's Game 5, leaving the game after taking a hit to the face from Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba while fighting for possession of the puck.

Sidney Crosby back at practice for Penguins (PensBurgh)

Before jetting off to New York for the decisive seventh game of their first round playoff series against the Rangers, the Penguins took part in one (final?)

While nothing is certain, it looks promising that Pittsburgh could get their starting goalie and maybe even their captain back right in the nick of time. Brian Dumoulin continues to progress off the ice. That likely means that Radim Zohorna will be making his NHL playoff debut in a Game 7. They’re obviously on the ice. Too much can be read into practice participation — after all Rickard Rakell (concussed in Game 1) has been on the ice with the team for several days now, including today. Coach Sullivan on the status of Crosby, Jarry, and Rakell for tomorrow: “We’ll take each day as it comes.

Molinari: Penguins Have No Business Winning Game 7 … But Don't ... (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

The Pittsburgh Penguins will have a lot going against them in Game 7 against New York, but there are a few factors working in their favor.

Make no mistake, New York is a quality team and should get better over the next few seasons unless that salary-cap ceiling scuttles it. Getting Rickard Rakell, who was hurt in the first period of Game 1, would be a nice plus, too. That clearly was the pivotal moment in this series. There’s no shame in losing a best-of-seven to a club of that caliber; the shame would be for the Penguins’ core of Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang and Crosby to have this as the final act of its remarkable 16-year run. Perhaps it is a reflection of the culture and unrelenting will to succeed that have existed in the franchise at times over the course of its existence, but it’s not as if it’s the by-product of a gene that’s passed from generation-to-generation of Penguins players. Sure, he is just a second-pairing defenseman who has been held without a point in four of the first six games, but no one in the league has done more to influence the outcome of a series than Trouba.
