Back in 2020, Mike Swigunski had only planned to visit Georgia, a small country that sits between eastern Europe and western Asia, for 30 days.

"But as of now, I just enjoy my life overseas a lot more than if I were going to live in the U.S." "A lot of places don't even open until 10 a.m., and in general, Georgians are working to live, not living to work," he adds. "Without a chef, I'd be eating out a lot more and ordering takeout," he says. "As soon as I saw this place, I fell in love," he says. "If I were trying to replicate my same infrastructure in the U.S., it would probably be around ten times more expensive." Swigunski lives in a two-bedroom apartment with a private Italian garden that he found through a local realtor. "These services are helping other people by inspiring them to create a different journey or start their own global careers," he says. "I was 22 years old, and I was confused on which path to follow … but I knew my mother would have wanted me to follow my dreams." "I was absolutely devastated," he says. As Swigunski recalls, however, he quickly fell in love with Tbilisi's old-world charm as well as its relaxed culture of good food and warm hospitality. Swigunski had only planned to visit Georgia, a small country that sits between eastern Europe and western Asia, for 30 days. But instead of hunkering down with roommates or family, Swigunski was 6,000 miles away from home, alone in a foreign country.

It was not immediately known if the girl’s grandfather and uncle have an attorney who can speak on their behalf.

New Heights and Old Grudges as Turkey Crowns Its Champion (The New York Times)

Trabzonspor claimed the title almost two weeks ago. Its team, and its fans, aren't done celebrating.

In doing so, Messi became the latest sports figure to accept the huge checks being doled out by Saudi Arabia’s leaders as part of a global push to change perceptions of the country, a process many have labeled sportswashing. Caps on commissions are also part of the revised regulations, and would top out at closer to 10 percent than the nearly 50 percent Raiola and others have pocketed in the past. At a meeting in sun-dappled Vienna this week, the framework for the future of the Champions League was finally approved. According to multiple news reports, City also paid fees to intermediaries involved in the deal, including an eight-figure payout to Haaland’s father for acting as a middleman, and about $40 million to the player’s agent, Mino Raiola. Those totals were comparable to the fee for Haaland himself. When their plot collapsed almost the moment it was exposed to the light, though, Ceferin and the other leaders of European soccer were presented with the space they needed to follow through on their strong rhetoric about resetting the balance of power in the sport. Under pressure from the biggest leagues, who complained of too many matches, the number of group stage games was reduced to eight from a proposed 10. Games between the teams have frequently been marred by crowd disturbances — to be fair, not uncommon events at the top of Turkish soccer — but the relationship plumbed new depths in 2015 when a bus carrying the Fenerbahce team came under attack as it traversed a steep mountain road on its way to the Trabzon airport after a game nearby. Well, since the extra places have been earmarked for the leagues with the best record in Europe the previous season, that most likely means even more Champions League spots for teams from the biggest, richest and most powerful league of them all: the Premier League. It’s also a reminder that for all their fighting and sniping and suing, UEFA and the dirty dozen need one another more than they care to admit. That was clear in the celebrations, which have continued for more than a week with gatherings, concerts and rallies. They even have a phrase for the feeling: “Everywhere is Trabzon to us.” Koc railed against the new Turkish champion, saying it had benefited from curious refereeing appointments (claims that seem to be made by all Turkish teams about all of their opponents all of the time). He then claimed the team’s decision to relocate its final home game to Istanbul was an act of provocation; mocked Trabzonspor’s claim on the controversial 2011 championship; and even resurrected the bus shooting, which he argued is still commemorated by Trabzonspor fans, including on a banner at a match this season. That will come on Saturday, when a delegation from the Turkish soccer federation will travel to Trabzon, an ancient city on the south coast of the Black Sea, to deliver a title that had, for so long, seemed as if it would never materialize.

He was a hot commodity as a national champion and most in the tennis world figured he was turning pro. He walked across the podium to that degree last month. "And I told him from the beginning not to worry about team, and to make the best choice for himself." It just so happened that a hip injury led to a nagging back injury later in the summer and he just was not at his best. The Riffice regimen/routine is rooted in a disciplined, goal-oriented approach to … well … everything. A couple weeks ago, the two took the dog for their morning walk around the neighborhood lake in Orlando. That's when Riffice popped the question. The same time Riffice and the Gators were embarking on their title defense. The guy is a leader. Riffice, ranked 28th in the country, is a combined 42-9 in dual singles the last two seasons, with all but 10 of those coming at No. 2.

The risks of this journey into the unknown is one reason some stay near the frontline. Pregnant and with a child, she is striking out into the unknown with little more than a phone number of a friend in Poland. Charities have been warning about the trafficking of women like Irina, vulnerable and alone, as they cross into Europe. Like so much of the civilian response to the Russian invasion, this evacuation is an unlikely and improvised effort run by volunteers willing to risk their lives for strangers. Mark Poppert, an American who has left his home in Doha to volunteer with a local Ukrainian charity, Vostok SOS, is at the wheel of a van that serves as a rudimentary ambulance for evacuees who can’t sit up. “Those who stay need basic living conditions, and we have to maintain critical infrastructure … people will better support our army and country if we are here.” The pressures of war has thrown daily life into chaos and made people vulnerable in other ways. “So the Ukrainians know they have international support,” he says, although it is unclear how many locals pick up on the gesture of solidarity. When the convoy arrives, everyone on the platform is slightly nervous, after last month’s strike on nearby Kramatorsk station. He is a stroke survivor who can barely walk, and his daughter had badgered the couple into accepting an evacuation offer from Druzhkivka before they become trapped there by a rain of Russian shells. Residents of places that might be next have been urged by government and relatives to leave while it is still possible, advice that many heeded weeks ago. “There is no Popasna now,” said Oleh, a construction worker who had tried to ride out the fighting in a basement shelter with his family until their own home was hit.
