DALLAS -- The Stars had to win Game 6 on Friday night just to keep their season going. But in beating the Calgary Flames 4-2 in front of a sellout crowd of ...
It was a moment that was filled with energy, with pride, and with the belief this team can do it again. "It's going to be a war," Raffl said of Game 7. Miro Heiskanen made a scintillating move to get the game-winner, as he moved from right to left and then snapped a shot through a crowd for his first goal of the series. "Obviously, there's emotion involved and you tend to snap if something happens where you think it's not the right call. Luke Glendening was knocked out of the game after a second-period hit from Nikita Zadorov, but he returned and sat on the bench in the third period. But the Stars instead dug in and took control of the game. That was a great performance by Miro. When you stand behind the bench and watch him and you see the emotion he plays with, it's a calm emotion. Raffl was there to push the puck home, a key moment against a Flames goalie who entered the game leading the NHL in goals-against average in the playoffs at 1.21. It was a great sign for a Stars team that's been goal starved for a while. On the second goal, Kiviranta's been solid at being a pest and finding ways to possess the puck, and he did just that. "I think the message was that we've got to go have a good third. Dallas started the game a little slow, but still got the first goal. The Stars were the only team to make the playoffs with a negative goal differential (minus-8). On paper, the season should be done for Dallas. But everyone in the dressing room decided it needed to go on.
The Stars came out of the gate strong showing the Flames they weren't going to be able to walk into the AAC and win. Rick Bowness did have to make a line change ...
The Stars would go on to win with a 4-2 victory over the Flames as the Stars head to Calgary for the do-or-die game 7 on Sunday night. That was a wild 2nd period and somehow the Stars managed to end up on top at the end. The Flames would lead in the shots on goal category 19-10. At the end of the 1st period, the Stars would lead the Calgary Flames 1-0. Here is what happened in the Stars do or die game at the American Airlines Center Friday night. With a win, they force a Game 7 in Calgary, or If they lost, their season would be over and the Flames would advance.
Joe Pavelski and the Dallas Stars were skating with urgency in the third period. If not, it could easily have been their last one of the season.
Calgary is 5-7 in Game 7s, but has lost six of the last seven it has played. It’s a tight game but I’d say that 3-2 goal late in the second was tough,” Flames center Elias Lindholm said. Joel Kiviranta was trying to follow up his own shot, even reaching back after skating past the net, while two Calgary skaters and Markstrom all went down on the ice. We took a step in the right direction of doing it.” We couldn’t get the equalizer,” a rather-terse Calgary coach Darryl Sutter said. “The other night, they came out hard in the third and we didn’t handle it well enough.
The two Dallas franchises have each played seven Game 7s, but they have never even happened in the same year until now.
But Dallas led most of the first half in Game 5 and trailed by just one point early in the third quarter before a 17-0 run by Phoenix, coming seemingly from out of nowhere, ended the game for all practical purposes. The loser has avoided double-digit defeats only twice in six games and the closest game was Dallas losing by seven points in Game 1. Stars’ fans had much happier memories, of course, with the two Western Conference Final Game 7 wins over Colorado when Eddie outplayed Patrick in goal, sending the Stars to their first two Finals here and their only Cup win. On consecutive nights at American Airlines Center, the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars dispatched Phoenix and Calgary for the third time each to set up a Game 7 for each that will be played not only on the same night but at overlapping times. The Mavs face the Suns a seventh and final time in the Footprint Center at 7 Sunday night. Somewhere in the middle of the third quarter there, the puck will drop 1200 miles north at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary where the Flames and Stars will go at it, quite conceivably for hours.
The Flames almost came back in Game 6. On Sunday, they'll determine how this team is remembered.
That is a good line for the Flames and you’d hope they stick together in Game 7. 1. This game was a bit of a deviation from the rest of the series. This was the goal that started the comeback in the second period. He has four points, two of which are secondary assists, has been pulled off the first line at times, and hasn’t looked like the 100-point player he was in the regular season. He played 14:34 in Game 6 taking on more playing time with Chris Tanev leaving the game in the second. Tanev is a critical piece of the Flames’ roster, and blue line. As much as it seems that Dallas is an inferior opponent — and in some ways the Stars are — there are no easy outs in the playoffs. Edmonton is trying to avoid elimination for a second straight game against LA. Carolina blew a 2-0 series lead against Boston. And Pittsburgh failed to put the Rangers away in two straight games. And they’re not the only team in this situation. In the sixth game of an opening round that hasn’t gone according to plan for Calgary, they had a chance to put the Dallas Stars away. Those stakes, and the complete randomness of hockey, are reasons to be nervous about Game 7. The Flames piled up points in the regular season and raised expectations.
The Dallas Stars and Calgary Flames play in Game 7 for all the marbles. One team advances on Sunday while the other goes home.
The Mavericks play Game 7 at 7:00 p.m. while the Stars play at 8:30 p.m. The fact the Stars brought a team like the Flames to a Game 7 exceeds expectations. This is the 8th Game 7 in Dallas Stars history. 3-0 in a Game 7 is their record against the Colorado Avalanche. Let’s say the Stars do win this one, it will be their first win against not-Colorado in a Game 7 since moving to Dallas in 1993. Game 7 has the will to alter a Franchise’s destiny. The Flames are 5-7 in this particular game. With Markstrom in the net.). The Stars put nine pucks past Markstrom in six games. This is the final of five Game 7s over the weekend (BOS/CAR, TBL/TOR, LAK/EDM, PIT/NYR, DAL/CAL). This is the 8th Game 7 for the Stars since moving to Dallas. Calgary is also playing in their 13th. The Dallas Stars and Calgary Flames play in a winner-take-all game to advance on Sunday. This series can go either way as anything is possible in these playoffs. This team can extinguish the Flames in Game 7 and do serious damage through the rest of the Playoffs. Their goals are sporadic (0, 1, 3, 1, 1, 3. This is the only series where a team didn’t score five. Markstrom has the best GAA in the NHL at 1.52 with the same critique. This is a tight low-scoring series where the defense and goaltending are excellent.
The Flames won just 32% of their draws in Game 6, a series low. Calle Jarkrok was 0-for-12. Mikael Backlund was 5-for-18. Elias Lindholm was 12-for-27. Trevor ...
DailyFaceoff has the tools you need for both daily and season-long fantasy leagues, including a lineup optimizer, daily projections, and a whole lot more. The Backlund line had an expected goals percentage of 50.6, which is fairly good. Neither seemed pleasant, and Tanev missed the entire third period. With Tanev and Zadorov both likely question marks for Game 7 – Zadorov might be getting suspended – it seems like that we see Connor Mackey slot in and some new defensive pairings. Coleman, who won the Stanley Cup in each of the past two playoffs, has been excellent in this series. The Flames were very unlucky to not score in the opening period, primarily due to Grand Theft Oettinger.
Anger, for lack of a better word, is good. Especially in a playoff series. The Stars and Calgary Flames are heading into Game 7 Sunday at Scotiabank ...
The Stars needed that desperation in Game 6 to finally flip the script in terms of puck possession and shots on goal and ended up having their best game of the series. "Of course, it helps," Kiviranta said when asked about the role of anger. "I know it's a bigger guy hitting a smaller guy, but it's the first contact on the head that we've been trying for years to get out of the game. "I think it's just our competitive nature and wanting to win and doing whatever it takes to win," Stars captain Jamie Benn said of walking the fine line. On Friday, it would've been easy for the Stars to get upset that Zadorov wasn't called for a penalty. "You come off after a shift and make eye contact with him and he's encouraging us to keep going and be better," Benn said. "These are the hits we're trying to get out of the game," Bowness said. The veteran forward didn't play but gave encouragement to his teammates as they were protecting a one-goal lead. The Stars on Friday struck the perfect balance of emotion and intelligence. Before the ruling was announced, Bowness said there needs to be some accountability. Of course, anger, like all good things, has to be taken in the proper dose. The Stars and Calgary Flames are heading into Game 7 Sunday at Scotiabank Saddledome, and there's expected to some serious anger going around.
CALGARY — Most Calgary Flames players lack Game 7 experience in the NHL playoffs, but their coach doesn't. Darryl Sutter owns the best all-time record among ...
"You want to have emotion, but there's a balance," Lucic said. The last time this team went the finals, we lost a Game 7, but to get to that Game 7, you had to win in a Game 7." "It's a quiet place," the coach said. The Stars' most recent Game 7 was also in Alberta two years ago in Edmonton's playoff bubble. Due in large part to the work of Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger and Calgary counterpart Jacob Markstrom, the series has been low-scoring. "I totally disagree there should be a hearing considering there's been slewfoots in this series." That's, in the end, what separates you from where you stand in the league too as a player. Sutter returned to the Flames just over a year ago. "In the long run, that's what separates you and I've been through several of those game sevens. It's an opportunity to be a hero too." There's guys in this series that haven't been as productive as they'd like. Ten players in Calgary's current lineup have never won a playoff series, while all but four Stars have done so.

“For guys that haven't been in Game 7s, it's time to step up,” said Flames head coach Darryl Sutter. “If there's guys in this series who haven't been as ...
“Just excited, going to be awesome playing in front of the C of Red again,” Backlund said. That same message was echoed when Mikael Backlund spoke with the media. “You obviously know it’s a do-or-die game and from my experience through Game 7s you’ve just got to go out there and play,” Lucic said. Why was the Stars' path to this pivotal point influenced by the ... Arizona Coyotes?
Game 6 was a Game 7, of sorts, for the Stars because they were facing elimination, just as they are again. The Stars were already close to playoff intensity when the series began while the Flames were almost two weeks out from playing a meaningful game. The Flames are the team that finished with 111 points and atop their division. For one, the Central Division was a tougher slate to get through this season than the Pacific. And after the deep hole they dug themselves into at the start of the season, the Stars have had some sort of playoff urgency going back to November. That playoff-type intensity only ramped up in March and April, when the Stars were in a fight for their playoff lives while the Flames were skating along fairly comfortably. After all, the Flames were heavily favored and the Stars have forced it against them, but given the firepower the Avalanche have and the way they dominated the Predators in the sweep, the chances would have certainly been lower. Of the eight first-round series, none has been played with the score within one goal for more time than the Stars and Flames. If you only count regulation, eliminating the triple-overtime contest between the Rangers and Penguins, it’s not even close. They were only 13 minutes behind the Los Angeles Kings for the No. 1 spot in the league in that category. Oettinger’s production through six games is the bottom-line reason the Stars are still in this series. Through the first round of the postseason, Oettinger has been the best goaltender in the NHL, posting a .954 save percentage, which is 0.11 percent better than second-place Jacob Markstrom. Without Oettinger, the Stars would not be pushing their first-round series to seven games, and there’s an argument to be made that without the Wedgewood trade, Oettinger wouldn’t be as dominant as he’s been. Many of the players on the current Stars roster were there for the 2020 game and many were around for 2019 as well. But the greatest impact was the final day of the regular season. The Stars were overworking Jake Oettinger. Prior to acquiring Wedgewood, Oettinger had started 19 of 21 games, with a couple of Holtby starts sprinkled in.
We're down to the final two games of Round 1. We explore how each team can advance, and we predict the outcomes.
It's just a matter of how much of a factor he'll be in the game. But outside of the Penguins' lineup, the key for the Rangers in Game 7 is not to be such a defensive pushover in the early part of the game. The other key to Game 7 is to hope that the Stars' stars are the difference-makers. For all of their own high-octane talent, what the Flames can't have is a repeat of Game 6, in which they're trading rush chances and getting frustrated that Oettinger is repeatedly up to the task of stopping them (side note: Calgary knows traffic in front of the goaltender is allowed right?). The Flames slamming the door and yelling on the bench won't help; injecting that passion into sound defensive-zone play, smart breakouts and a punishing forecheck that slows Dallas' best line will put Calgary on a fast track to the second round. What the Flames need is quiet confidence and leadership to not let a terrific opportunity slip away. Path to victory for Dallas: Pick up the pace. But these were the things that Shesterkin handled brilliantly in the regular season that have just not translated to the postseason. Wyshynski's X factor: Shesterkin might still have the sound of Penguins fans chanting his name as he takes the ice in Game 7, haunting him along with his performance in this series. The Penguins built a lead in Game 6 because the Rangers were, to quote coach Gerard Gallant after Game 4, "playing soft." Crosby was a primary factor in much of Pittsburgh's offensive success before being knocked out of Game 5, but the formula is there for the taking regardless of who's dressed in black and gold. When he's not in the lineup, the Penguins are an easily flustered bunch -- giving up two-goal leads in Games 5 and 6, post-Crosby -- whose special teams troubles are exacerbated. So while slowing down the likes of Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad and Artemi Panarin is helpful, the way through for Pittsburgh is recognizing that, for whatever reason, Shesterkin is not impenetrable.
