You’re gonna have to do a lot of things right.” The Blues will have to find a way to slow down Cale Makar, who had 10 points in Colorado’s sweep. “I know we used a lot of (defensemen) in the series, but they all had a job to do and they did it,” Berube said. And that was a big reason we stuck with the seven.” They are watching all the time and they kind of get a really good feel for who’s going good and what they think is gonna work for us. First and foremost, your goaltender has to be your best penalty killer and our goaltenders have been incredible all year.” “They got a lot of high-end players. “I think it starts with the goaltending. “I don’t mind starting the playoffs on the road,” Blues forward David Perron said. 3 Takeaways From Blues' 5-1 Win Over Wild (The Hockey Writers)

The St. Louis Blues punched their ticket to the second round of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs after defeating the Minnesota Wild.

Either way, the Blues are moving on to the second round for the first time since their Cup run in 2019. The Avalanche have a more reliable netminder in Darcy Kuemper if he’s healthy, and the Blues have a seemingly more confident Binnington. Despite being outshot 21-6 themselves in the first and third periods, they made it count in the second period. They took the play to the Wild in the period, which really made it feel like game over for Minnesota. The adjustments of head coach Craig Berube were on display in these last three games, as he found some great forward line combinations and it showed up in this period, as they generated some fantastic scoring chances. The St. Louis Blues punched their ticket to the second round of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs on Thursday (May 12) after defeating the Minnesota Wild in six games.

In the first three games the Wild scored 70 percent of the five on five goals (7-3.) In the final three games, the Blues scored 75 percent of the five on five goals (8–3.) And in their three straight wins the Blues had a huge 6–1 advantage on high-danger goals at five on five. In the six games Thomas played just under 30 combined minutes on the power play and penalty kill. The Blues scored a power play goal (or more in all six games, converted PP opportunities at a rate of 30.7 percent, and killed off 83.4% of Minnesota’s power plays. 8. After a slow start, the Blues seized the advantage at five on five. Once the Blues got out of a jam (the awful Game 3 loss) and pushed back, the Wild went haywire and fell apart. I thought the Wild would go into the first-round meeting and shake off all of the bad things the Blues had done to them. Well, so much for respecting the Wild. After winning the series in six games, the Blues are 13-3-1 against the Wild since the start of last season. I didn’t think the Blues had some psychological grip on the Wild because of a rivalry that’s been so one-sided in recent times. After losing two of the first three games in the best-of-seven series, the Blues were in trouble. The Blues owned 15 of the 20 goals scored over the final three games. Last postseason the Blues were out of gas long before they got swept by the Avs in the first round. Inside the Blues locker room: calmness, confidence and the collective state of mind formed by previous comebacks and shaped by the character that survives ordeals.

Avalanche locks in on deep, dangerous Blues with second-round ... (The Denver Post)

Jared Bednar evaluates the St. Louis Blues similar to how he looks at his own team in the playoffs.

You don’t want to be thinking, ‘Oh, I’d rather play Minnesota,’ and then you have to play St. Louis and you’re already in your own head. Bednar and his staff will give the players Saturday off. Bednar scoffed at that record — as well as last year’s first-round series in which Colorado swept the Blues. The Avs and Blues will begin their seven-game Western Conference semifinal series at Ball Arena, it’s just unclear when that will be. But he wasn’t really paying much attention to it. The Avalanche coach sees great talent, depth and the ability to wear down an opponent over a seven-game series.

"Our mindset from the start was we were so dialed in," Erik Johnson said. "They're a physical team, a big heavy team," Mikko Rantanen said. He also noted that it was a good matchup for the group to get engaged right away, especially now as they take on another hefty opponent in St. Louis, who successfully slowed down Minnesota's speed and transition game. Colorado knew it would be a physical test as Nashville had finished the regular season with the most hits (2,470) and continued that physicality into the postseason. The Avalanche enter the Second Round coming off a First Round sweep over the Nashville Predators, whereas St. Louis took care of business in Game 6 against the Minnesota Wild in order to advance. St. Louis' depth is one of the team's strong suits as they boasted a league-high of nine skaters score 20-plus goals during the regular season, where Colorado recorded the second-most with seven.

Blues notebook: 'Old Reliables' come through (STLtoday.com)

O'Reilly, Perron and Tarasenko led the Blues' offense in series win against Minnesota.

O’Reilly, who led Blues forwards with 19:05 of ice time per game in the regular season, cracked the 20-minute mark 20 times. But you gotta look at a lot of the other guys, the little things that they do. They scored, and they did a lot of good things all-around. For Perron and Tarasenko, their goals came in clusters. So it’s pretty rare, and once again speaks to the depth of the St. Louis offense. All three players scored five goals in the Blues’ four games to two series win.

Thirty-goal scorers Kevin Fiala and Ryan Hartman had zero in the playoffs; same with Foligno. "You're looking for your best centerman to shut it down, and he's not there," Foligno said. But the team was still off. St. Louis goalie Jordan Binnington was almost perfect, picking up 25 saves to stop 83 of 88 shots while backstopping the Blues to three straight victories.
