Stream It Or Skip It: 'Sneakerella' on Disney+, A Gender-Swapped ... (Decider)

The Gist: A modern take on Cinderella, Sneakerella follows shoe stockroom boy El whose passion is designing sneakers. His stepfather and stepbrothers don't ...

The updated conclusion of the relationship between El and his stepdad is also heartwarming, and it’s genuinely comical that the stepbrothers are obsessed with going back to New Jersey instead of spreading their wings in one of the greatest cities on earth. The film, like Cinderella itself, is a musical, but the numbers reflect the urban setting. It’s a feel-good film with enjoyable updates to a beloved story. El (Chosen Jacobs) and his community of neighbors — including local restaurant owner Mrs. Singh, his best friend Sami, and his fairy god-neighbor Gustavo — are tight-knit and respectful of each other’s cultures, which is truly a great thing to see in a production aimed at younger kids. When El meets Kira, the heir to the sneaker maven Darius King, he begins to believe he might have a chance and decides to enter his designs in Sneakercon where the Kings are looking for the next new designer. Jacobs and his love interest Underwood are full of really great, youthful energy and it’s obvious that the adults are also having a great time.

Lexi Underwood Interview: Sneakerella (Screen Rant)

Sneakerella star Lexi Underwood chats about the role reversal and family dynamics in Disney's modern Cinderella musical.

That dynamic between all of them, and the support also the Darius gives Kira in the end - I think that all of that is beautiful. I feel like they just remind each other a lot of each other, and they both are determined to create the destinies and the life that they want. I also love how the royalty is transferred to a family business. Also just in that sneaker industry that has always been [male-dominated], and just now is starting to get out of the space of being male-dominated. What I love most about this is the fact that there's a gender role reversal. But Kira is inspired enough by El's passion for sneaker design that she negotiates on his behalf in front of her father (played by former NBA champion John Salley). Will they be able to achieve their dreams together and walk in each other's shoes while doing it?

Is Sneakerella on Netflix? (Netflix Life)

Wondering if the family-friendly musical comedy Sneakerella is available for subscribers to stream on Netflix? Don't worry, we've got you covered!

But unfortunately, the feature Sneakerella is not one of the many enchanting options available in Netflix’s lineup, and it seems very unlikely that will change any time soon. The musical comedy motion picture Sneakerella is yet another fine addition to the lineup and offers viewers a fantastic re-imagining of the classic fable. The spellbinding story of Cinderella has been redone several different times, and each iteration has a special place in fans’ hearts everywhere.

Sneakerella Review: Chosen Jacobs's gender-swapped version of ... (PINKVILLA)

El Morales is an aspirant sneaker designer from Queens who works as a stock boy in his late mother's shoe store. Read Pinkvilla's review of the film below.

A cunning piece performed by the villainous yet dimwitted stepbrothers and a rap fight between El and King are two highlights of the film. Sneakerella is a cross between High School Musical and In the Heights. The setting is a Disney-fied New York City (read: safe and tidy, with happy people singing and dancing on streets and subway trains). It transfers the HSM image to Queens and Manhattan with less levity and more street cred (picture Sharpay riding the subway) Some characters, particularly fairy godfather Gustavo and star athlete Darius King, needed more screen time, but it's interesting to watch the standard Cinderella roles played by the opposite genders. Sneakerella manages to make the narrative seem fresh and new by twisting a familiar setting and familiar people. Of course, there are the conventions: the ugly step-sisters and stepmother, the fairy godmother-like role model, the slipper, and the midnight regulations. However, Sneakerella's narrative is told in a manner more like Disney's animated adaptation, which was largely influenced by Charles Perrault's fairy tale of the same name. El attracts attention with his unique kicks when her family throws an event encouraging new designers to fight for a contract.

John Salley Interview: Sneakerella (Screen Rant)

Sneakerella star John Salley chats about how his new Disney+ film handles family, his own love of musicals, and why shoes matter.

John Salley: My mother says, "They start at the bottom, go up, and go back to the bottom. So, make sure that when they start at the bottom, go up, and come back to the bottom - they're impressed. And then The Wizard of Oz; then I loved The Wiz. Patti LaBelle, can't leave that out; Richard Pryor. Taking all these great people of color and still having a story that runs along the same line, but with a little twist, is exactly what happens in Sneakerella. We just switch some of the roles. I was showing families and fathers to allow your children to be as creative as they are. But I am in business with one of my daughters, so being able to parallel was amazing.

On The Scene: Disney+ Cast Of "Sneakerella" Attend World ... (theknockturnal.com)

We spoke with Chosen Jacobs, Lexi Underwood, John Salley, Bryan Terrell Clark, and more about their role in the movie and their modern spin on the classic ...

The moment you change these genders, the moment you make these people of color, we bring with us a history and a story that cannot be told any other way but by us and so I’m excited that on Friday, my little niece is going to get to see a princess that’s not begging for you know, the prince’s attention, but has agency and is fly, and if anything, she can offer something to her potential friends you know… I think they also have a bit of heart and they have their own goals and ambitions and maybe they get a bit blinded. I’m a little bit of a theater baby and a television and film baby. But I do feel like the musical element of it, the fairytale element of it is perfect for a Broadway actor to transition into a piece like this.” I’m just appreciative to be a part of such a beautiful story like Cinderella with our own spin and our own sauce.” They obviously do some things that are not great and they are the evil step siblings, but they also have a bit of heart as well and a lot of comedy. She knows what she wants, and it’s also that imagery of seeing a young black girl going out and setting after what she wants and not allowing anybody to distract her or to get her off the lane. John Salley: “My character embodies black excellence and it shows power and it shows a concerned family and it shows a loving family. I feel really grateful for the fact that I was able to bring her to life and I’m really excited for young girls, especially to see the role because I think that it’s really inspiring. You have to be able to tell yourself that you’re worthy to tell yourself that you are enough.” Lexi Underwood: “The fact that for the first time in ever or quite a while, you get to see a princess who’s not a damsel in distress waiting for a man to rescue her. And it was a moment where I had to look at myself and thank God for the village that was around me to say that the work itself in who we are is worthy and enough.

'Sneakerella' Review: Bringing that Disney Charm to a New ... (The Cosmic Circus)

Brian reviews new Disney+ original Sneakerella, with an assist from Ayla, who gives a mom's perspective on the film.

There’s a great theme of believing in yourself and not giving up on your dreams, even when there are bumps in the road. Some of the plots felt rushed to fit the film into a time frame of around two hours. But eventually, he sees the light and starts to see the beauty and talent of El and his designs. My perspective on Sneakerella is a little bit different than Brian’s. I’m evaluating this film through the lens of a parent of a young child. This film may only be in the caliber of a Disney Channel Original Movie from my childhood, but the lead was enough to make it worth viewing. Kira King had some less than satisfactory family dynamics as the princess of a dynasty, which appears to have given Underwood so much to work with. He doesn’t appear all too often throughout the film, but he was so charismatic and lovable as the magical being helping El achieve his dreams. Lexi Underwood was fantastic as the female co-lead of this film. Factor in the dancing and singing throughout the film and he was an incredible choice for the lead. Darius King is also, as you probably guessed, the owner of the company that makes the shoes El was after. That is, until one afternoon El, along with his best friend Sami (Devyn Nekoda) decides to skirt Trey’s (the stepfather) orders and attend a highly anticipated sneaker release in the city. The story is told from El’s (Chosen Jacobs) point of view.
