Peloton teases new rower at Homecoming event (The Verge)

At its annual Homecoming 2022 event, Peloton announced that the long-rumored connected rower was "coming soon." Chief product officer Tom Cortese also ...

But perhaps the one that will make Peloton diehards most excited is that the company is reopening its Peloton Studios. The Studios is where Peloton films and broadcasts its content, and before the pandemic, it was a place where many Peloton fans visiting New York City would pop in and get some face time with their favorite instructors. When asked about how the rower fits into Peloton’s new software-first strategy, Cortese says that the company “has always been and will always be a subscription business.” That in turn means keeping the fanbase happy with an ever-growing library of content and features. So while Peloton could do more in the future along these guidelines, this is at least a step in the right direction. “The problem with rowing has been it’s kind of inaccessible because the average person like me looks at a rower, and I don’t know what to do.” “Our business incentive is to keep you as a subscriber forever,” Cortese says. In this most recent quarter, even with an increase in subscription cancellations following news of a price hike, the churn rate actually improved to 0.75 percent. This is all in line with Peloton’s overall approach through the years. This year, the big tease is that Peloton officially confirmed a connected rower is coming. Cortese noted that Peloton is going to steadily increase its strength training content. Rumors about the rower have been floating around since 2018, when Bloomberg reported that Peloton had plans to launch it in 2020. We don’t know the specs or when it’ll launch — just that it’s “coming soon.” In terms of design, the rower itself appears to have a similar vibe to the Peloton Tread — sleek, with a minimalist profile and a display to watch classes on. Apple included rowing as a category in Fitness Plus. OrangeTheory is another trendy boutique fitness studio that heavily features rowing.

The company also laid off 41% of its sales and marketing staff in February. Bloomberg reported in late 2019 that the company had been working on one to diversify beyond cycling and running. "Combining cardio and strength — Peloton is excited to add this total body workout into its powerhouse arsenal of content and grow its connected fitness portfolio with even more options for engaging and challenging workout experiences."

Peloton teases rowing machine after years of rumors (Business Insider)

Peloton instructor Adrian Williams teased the new machine, calling it a "game-changer" for users' fitness routines.

In February, The Financial Times reported that Peloton would debut the rowing machine at its Homecoming event and that employees had already been testing the machine at home. With its latest machine — the first totally new product for Peloton since 2018, when it launched its connected treadmill — Peloton is entering a rapidly growing market. 9to5Google reported last August that Peloton could be building a rowing machine, after spotting language about rowing in an update to its Android app.

Peloton Teases Rowing Machine Coming to Its Lineup (CNET)

The fitness equipment maker confirms it will release a rowing machine.

Last month, Peloton revealed it was lowering equipment costs and raising subscription prices as part of an attempt to rejuvenate its business. Another new feature is the ability to track outdoor workouts including running and cycling in the Peloton app, so they will be counted towards Peloton challenges and streaks. New accessibility features for the Peloton Tread were also announced at the keynote. If you’re unable to wait for the Peloton rower, there is already an excellent Peloton-style rower on the market in the Hydrow, which costs £1,995, has a monthly sub of £38 for its classes and tops our best rowing machines list.

Plus: The iPod is dead, iPhones might go USB-C, folding screens get bendier, and a beloved music synthesizer gets an upgrade.

The company used its keynote event to show off a smorgasbord of software and hardware updates. And here’s all the new software updates. The original iPod launched in October 2001, and now its run has come to an end. (Those who are willing to plop down the $1,200 asking price, anyway.) This week, the company announced that the OP-1 has gotten its first major update since its launch in 2011. It’s not the only decision the company seems to have made to get out ahead of legislation. This only underscores that Peloton is a subscription company that wants to keep people engaged in its apps as much as possible.

Peloton Hints That an Interactive Rowing Machine Is On the Way (InsideHook)

Peloton announced that an online rowing machine is in the works, but hasn't provided any more details about it.

The announcement came as part of the company’s Homecoming 2022 virtual event, along with news about the company’s existing apps and news of compatibility with a host of apps for everything from screen reading to working scheduling. “Peloton rowing machine” does a pretty solid job of letting you know what’s for sale and what you can expect from it. It’s a rowing machine with a screen and a Peloton logo; beyond that, details are scarce.
