Louisiana native and former LSU standout Jarvis Landry is signing with the Saints, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Friday. The union comes just under two weeks after All-Pro safety Tryann Mathieu similarly returned to his roots. The two veterans crossed paths for one season (2011) in college, and they'll now team up once again in an attempt to return the Saints to the playoffs.

Jarvis Landry to Saints on One-Year Deal (Sports Illustrated)

Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry has agreed to a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints.

Part of the appeal for Landry is going back home, having played collegiately for the LSU Tigers, a place he's kept in touch with through his charity work. In some ways, Landry's toughness and willingness to play through anything likely hurt him with negotiations in free agency. The Browns are scheduled to host the Saints including Jarvis Landry in week 16 of the regular season on Saturday, December 24th.

Ex-Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry has agreed to join the New Orleans Saints in his home state of Louisiana.

In four seasons with the Browns, Landry made two of his five Pro Bowls (2018 and 2019) and started 56 of his 59 games in the regular season. The Browns signed Landry to a five-year, $75.5 million contract extension in April 2018. In the end, Landry requested his release after he couldn't reach an agreement on a restructured contract with the Browns and a trade didn't materialize, a league source said. After Beckham left during a chaotic stretch in which his father disparaged Mayfield's performance with an Instagram video, Landry avoided speaking to beat writers in a Browns setting. "Reality behind all this is I came back to play in the best shape of my life, I got hurt week 2 with a high grade MCL Sprain, Partial quad tear and bone bruise," Landry tweeted at the time. I do think he has a natural competitiveness both in route running and in route catching. “Organizationally, we are very excited to add David," Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said earlier Friday after the first of three rookie minicamp practices. He also threw a touchdown pass to Beckham. "He has versatility outside and inside. "Then came back way to early and ended up staying hurt the entire season. The Browns acquired four-time Pro Bowl receiver Amari Cooper on March 12 in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys. Later the same day, the Browns granted Landry permission to seek a trade. Financial terms have yet to be disclosed.

Landry is the second high-profile free agent to sign with New Orleans this month.

Despite the loss of Winston, the Saints finished the 2021 season with a 9-8 record while failing just short of the postseason. The Saints' offense also includes running back Alvin Kamara, a Pro Bowler in each of his first five seasons in New Orleans. A two-time Pro Bowler with the Browns, Landry's impact on the field and in the locker room helped Cleveland end the franchise's 18-year playoff drought three years after the franchise endured an 0-16 regular season.

Jarvis Landry's free agency wait is over, as the five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver revealed Friday he had agreed to join the New Orleans Saints.

In four seasons with the Browns, Landry made two of his five Pro Bowls (2018 and 2019) and started 56 of his 59 games in the regular season. He also threw a touchdown pass to Beckham. "Then came back way to early and ended up staying hurt the entire season. Now Landry is a member of the Saints. Like Landry, Beckham is a free agent who won't be back with the Browns despite occasional speculation to the contrary. In eight NFL seasons, Landry has started 113 of the 123 regular-season games in which he has appeared and compiled 688 catches on 1,045 targets for 7,598 yards and 37 touchdowns to go along with 40 carries for 239 yards and five touchdowns. Financial terms have yet to be disclosed. The Browns acquired four-time Pro Bowl receiver Amari Cooper on March 12 in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys. Later the same day, the Browns granted Landry permission to seek a trade. Former Browns GM John Dorsey acquired Landry in a 2018 trade with the Miami Dolphins, who drafted the player in the second round out of Louisiana State University in 2014.

NFLSU: Jarvis Landry Signs With New Orleans Saints (And the Valley Shook)

One week after the New Orleans Saints brought home one of the very best Tigers ever, Tyrann Mathieu, they signed a second one.

It’s funny, for basically all of the Sean Payton era, Saints fans like myself begged New Orleans to take LSU guys and the franchise just wouldn’t. Sure they took a flier on Will Clapp as a seventh round pick in 2018 and they eventually traded for Kwon Alexander in 2020 but other than that the Saints weirdly didn’t go for Saints players. Depending on how you look at it, Landry is either one of the best players of the last decade, the Les Miles era, or the entire history of LSU football. In eight seasons (four with Miami, the last four with Cleveland) Landry’s caught 688 passes for 7,598 yards and 37 touchdowns and made five straight Pro Bowls from 2015-2019.

Jarvis Landry heads home to sign with New Orleans Saints (Dawg Pound Daily)

The Cleveland Browns had shown some interest in bringing Jarvis Landry back but in the end, he wound up signing with the New Orleans Saints.

Suddenly, the receiving corps in New Orleans is crowded — but it could also benefit Landry since it will allow him to focus primarily on playing the slot, which is where he excels. While the specific details are not known, Tom Pelissero did say he could make “up to” $6 million. Landry was a star player for LSU after growing up in Louisiana. He not only gets a new life in the NFL but will be able to play in the state where he was born, which is always a fun storyline.
