'Good old Game 7': How the Bucks look to regroup for their winner ... (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

On one hand, the fact the Milwaukee Bucks had to do a quick pack job to head back to Boston for Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Sunday ...

“Hey, at the end of the day as I said, hopefully we can play good basketball and put ourselves in a position to win,” Antetokounmpo said. And no, the Bucks aren’t going to be rattled in heading to Massachusetts for the third time. “That gives us confidence knowing that we’ve been here before and we’ve experienced it, we know what it’s like, so it gives us a little bit of whatever you want to say going into this game.” There’s no reason to try and do more than they’ve done. Hopefully we can play good basketball.” Wesley Matthews, George Hill and Holiday must continue to harass Tatum and Brown. That’s something we kind of have to go back, evaluate, but at the end of the day, man, he’s a great player, a great offensive player, and it’s a close-out game for his team and he handled that.” The Bucks made just 7 threes, a 30-point disparity that is nearly impossible to overcome. At the end of the day I still think the best shot in basketball is the layup, but you’ve got to find ways to move the basketball and get some open threes.” “It’s the new-wave NBA right? But the Bucks already have done it for three wins in this series and twice in Boston. Keeping it steady isn’t a mantra for the Bucks, but they have lived by it to great success to date. “But he had it going today.

Milwaukee has already recorded 77 killings, a 40% increase from the same time in 2021. Experts believe stress and pressures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the violence. Seventeen more people were injured in a second shooting about two hours later, which happened a few blocks away. The list also included Philadelphia, Indianapolis and others. Police said a 29-year-old man was in custody. None of the injuries from either shooting after Friday night’s game were believed to be life-threatening.

As a collective, as a team, whatever it takes to win. We don’t want to be the team or feel like we should be the team that is going home. It will be a far different type of game that time around for the Celtics with Tatum unlikely to go for a repeat performance of 46 points. “You got to come out with the mindset like kill or be killed, survival of the fittest. “Being in certain situations and being able to learn from them has been great early in all of our careers. “It was a big-time performance,” Brown said after the win.

Tatum, however, has more dependable offensive help in Brown and Smart and I would bet on a big Al Horford game, too. James Harden took two shots in the second half of Philly's season-ending loss on Thursday. He entered Game 6 shooting just 40 percent for the series, but he wasn't going to go out quietly. I was really late to the Giannis bandwagon. Think about the history of the Boston Celtics, and Tatum is now just the second player in franchise history, joining Sam Jones, to post multiple 45-point playoff games. For that reason, I want to give the Bucks a slight edge in Game 7, Boston's home-court advantage notwithstanding. Tatum's Celtics got the win, sending this series to a Game 7 on Sunday.

Tatum finished the incredible scoring outburst by punishing the Bucks for helping off him with another triple from the left wing, as Connaughton arrived a hair late. And perhaps most important, White logged a quick seven points after checking in for the final four minutes of the opening half. He made one of those plays that absolutely deflates a home crowd to begin the fourth quarter when he picked Giannis’s pocket immediately after the two-time MVP grabbed a defensive rebound. On a night in which Giannis posted the NBA’s first 40-point 20-rebound playoff performance since Shaq in 2001, the Bucks still lost by double-figures at home, largely because few of his teammates joined the party. In one case, with Boston leading 75–64, Holiday was speeding the ball down the floor on a 3-on-2 transition look with teammates on either wing. Holiday has easily been the player to see the biggest increase in shot attempts without his running mate, taking 20 shots in Game 1, 20 in Game 2, 30 tries in Game 3, 22 attempts in Game 4 and 24 in Game 5.

Jayson Tatum scored 46 points to help the Celtics stave off elimination and force a Game 7 against the Bucks in Boston on Sunday.

"Al hurt them early in the series, and they tried to take that away, but it opens up other things for other guys," Udoka said. And I expect to be a part of a great game. "I expect it to be loud. I expect it to be fun. We put it to bed the next day and look forward to getting back to the Garden." I try to bring that every game." "We had the right resolve," Udoka said. "It was a big-time performance," Brown said. He said immediately following that game, he went to the practice facility to get ready for Game 6. That's what we that's what we lean on him to do." Boston coach Ime Udoka said he told his team to not get stagnant in the fourth quarter as they did a game ago and continue to go on the attack. On Friday night, the Celtics again held a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter but made sure to leave with a different outcome.

Jayson Tatum Saves the Boston Celtics' Season With 46 Points (The New York Times)

Was it the 46 points? The crushing 3-pointers? The clutch free throws? Tatum, the Boston forward, was feeling it against the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday.

The Bucks were threatening in the fourth quarter when Antetokounmpo sank a 3-pointer. Tatum proceeded to score the Celtics’ next 10 points, a flurry capped by a deep 3-pointer over the top of the Bucks’ Pat Connaughton. It was a series that deserved a seventh game, and the Celtics delivered. And consider the contributions of Derrick White, a former Division II player and trade deadline acquisition who was all over the place in the final three minutes of the first half. He drew a charging foul on Antetokounmpo. And then he made two free throws, lifting the Celtics to a 10-point lead at halftime. The stage belonged to Tatum. The good news, Udoka said, was that the Celtics had played well in Game 5 — until they stopped playing well. He recalled going straight to the team’s practice facility after the game, and then tossing and turning through two sleepless nights ahead of Game 6. There was no doubt about that after Tatum finished with 46 points and 9 rebounds to help even the series at three games apiece. There were questions about whether Jayson Tatum could coexist with Jaylen Brown — was it time for the team to consider trading Brown? — along with inevitable critiques of Ime Udoka in his first season as coach. “I think we showed a lot of toughness and growth.” Could they somehow find the resolve to extend their Eastern Conference semifinal series with the Bucks?

Celtics vs. Bucks score, takeaways: Jayson Tatum erupts for 46 ... (CBSSports.com)

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 44 points and grabbed 20 rebounds but Boston was too much for Milwaukee.

“Never any doubt or hangover from that game.”— Boston Celtics (@celtics) May 14, 2022 tatum is putting the celtics on his back. We showed a lot of toughness and growth coming out here and getting a win on the road." He scored 17 points in the first quarter to keep the Bucks in the game despite the Celtics' strong start, and kept attacking all night long. His absence has forced Giannis Antetokounmpo to take on a somewhat ridiculous burden, and attempt to carry the Bucks by himself. At times in this series he's been able to do just that; the Bucks have won three games, after all. It's going to be hard for him to play a better one than he did on Friday night. Tatum's 46 points were the second-most in franchise history when facing elimination, and he joined Sam Jones as the only other Celtic to have multiple 45-point playoff games. "Yeah, obviously he hit some big ones throughout the game," Celtics coach Ime Udoka said. Then he repeated the sequence with another fadeaway and another 3. Once up by 18, the Celtics' lead had been trimmed to four with 8:42 to play, and the flashbacks from Game 5 were kicking in. Tatum edged out Giannis for a game-high 46 points to go along with nine rebounds and four assists.

3 takeaways from Milwaukee Bucks' awful Game 6 loss to Boston ... (Behind The Bucks Pass)

With a chance to close out the series, the Milwaukee Bucks suffered an embarrassing loss to the Boston Celtics in Game 6, and here are three takeaways.

The Bucks’ drop scheme defensively opened the door for the Celtics to find a groove straight away, and it worked as they shot a scorching-hot 8-of-15 from three in the first quarter alone. Milwaukee’s overall offense was not much better as they shot just 40.9 percent from the floor, but this poor 3-point shooting was a significant reason why. The Bucks shot 7-of-29 (24.1 percent) from 3-point range last night, once again struggling to find any semblance of a groove from 3-point land.

The winner is going to feel like he's won a prize fight, and the loser is going to be devastated -- and lay in wait for another chance. He's averaging 35.3 points, 13.8 rebounds, and 6.8 assists in the series. After a dud in Game 3 in which he played his worst game of the postseason, shooting 4-of-19, Tatum vowed to be better. "I was excited to play Game 6," Tatum said. Setting an early tone for the Celtics, he scored 18 points in the first half to give the Celtics a 10-point halftime lead. It was exactly the kind of effort a superstar delivers in elimination games. They'd all come to Fiserv Forum expecting to see the Bucks win -- and why not? "That's why he gets paid the big bucks for moments like that," said Marcus Smart, who scored 21 points. He's the third player ever to have three 40-point games against the Celtics in the playoffs. This is a black-and-blue series, the ice bag and Advil counts rising by the game. He made 14 contested shots, according to ESPN Stats & Information, demoralizing the Bucks and their crowd. But they’ll be on their home court, in front of their passionate fans, and they are, by a slim but relevant margin, the more complete team. It was Brown’s 3-pointer off a pass from Smart that gave the Celtics their biggest lead, 68-50, at the 7:20 mark of the third. It was a master class in shot making, and it gave the Celtics a chance to exhale. He buried a corner jumper at the end of the shot clock (87-81), then, after a spectacular reverse layup from Pat Connaughton (when did he turn into Dr. J?), buried a 3-pointer in George Hill’s face — again late in the shot clock — for a 90-83 lead. But down the stretch, he went into full I’ve-got-this mode, and it’s a good thing he did, because the Bucks had the Celtics wobbling. Antetokounmpo finished with 44 points, 20 rebounds, 6 assists, and the knowledge that he is going to have to somehow muster even a little more brilliance in Game 7 Sunday afternoon at TD Garden.

The Milwaukee Bucks must switch more defensively vs. Boston Celtics (Behind The Bucks Pass)

Heading into a critical Game 7, the Milwaukee Bucks need to switch more defensively against the Boston Celtics if they're going to survive and advance.

In the concluding game of the series, the Bucks can’t let Boston catch fire from 3-point land again. With most of their rotation being legit threats from 3-point territory, Boston is generating plenty of open opportunities to pounce upon when the Bucks are in drop coverage defensively. Evidently, the Celtics would try to hunt mismatches in this scenario, but it might be more worth the risk than the gamble of leaving open 3-point shooters in drop coverage. Of course, this would mean fewer minutes for Brook Lopez and Grayson Allen, but they haven’t been productive enough offensively to give the Bucks a reason to maintain their playing time. Across the Mike Budenholzer era in Milwaukee, the Bucks have developed an elite defensive system that stems from a drop coverage scheme. Despite a stellar performance from Giannis Antetokounmpo that included a monster stat line of 44 points, 20 rebounds, six assists, and two blocks, the Bucks couldn’t get enough help from the supporting cast to carry them over the top this time.

Pair of 7s: Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns happy to be home (710 ESPN Seattle)

PHOENIX (AP) -- The NBA's long regular season can be tedious, but make no mistake, it matters. Just ask the Boston Celtics and Phoenix Suns -- two teams.

–PRESSURE IS ON: Suns. Phoenix is trying to make it back to the NBA Finals for a second straight season and had the league’s best regular-season record. Losing in the second round of the playoffs would be a major disappointment. Though the series has been close, the individual games often have been blowouts: Three of the six have been decided by at least 20 points. In Boston’s three victories, the Celtics have shot 41.5% from 3-point range and have outscored the Bucks 153-57 from beyond the arc. –KEEP AN EYE ON: Suns PG Chris Paul. The 12-time All-Star is having a difficult series, averaging just 6.5 assists, which is well below his regular-season average. In the Celtics’ three losses, they have a much narrower 111-102 advantage from 3-point range and have made just 32.5% of their attempts. He has scored a total of 23 points over his last five games and has shot 2 of 14 from 3-point range during that stretch. It’s just a matter of extension, inflexion and if the pain is gone basically with the bone bruise. Celtics F/C Robert Williams III has missed three straight games with soreness in his surgically repaired left knee and is questionable for Game 7. It’s the second consecutive year the Mavericks have played a Game 7. –INJURY WATCH: Bucks F Khris Middleton has missed nine straight playoff game with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Respect to both fan bases making it difficult for the away team.”

In these playoffs, Jayson Tatum has emerged as a superstar offensive talent and his performance in Game 6 just backs this up. Khris Middleton’s absence has hurt the Bucks more than many would have thought. It is kind of hard to believe that this is Jayson Tatum’s fifth NBA season, especially given that he is only 24-years-old. They were +51 from deep in Game 2, +15 from deep in Game 4 and +30 from deep in Game 6, all of which were games that the Celtics won in this series. Tatum is once again going to be a point of emphasis offensively for the Celtics in Game 7 on Sunday and he is the main reason why they have a chance to only only contend for a title this season, but for many seasons to come. Giannis Antetokounmpo has continued to prove that he is the best player in the world for the Bucks, but Jayson Tatum put on a show in Game 6 on Friday, proving to everyone that he can hang with the best of the best in this league.
