Calgary Flames finally won a pivotal Game 5, but can they make it ... (The Athletic)

The Flames are now one win away from eliminating the Dallas Stars after winning Game 5 Wednesday night.

“It’s going to feel a lot better than if we were down (in the series),” Backlund said. And they will be in front of a loud home crowd at American Airlines Center. As Sutter said, each win in the playoffs is tougher than the last. There will be a playoff-savvy Dallas team waiting for them on Friday, a team that has given the Flames unexpected issues in this opening round. Since the 2004 Stanley Cup Final run, every time the Flames have lost a Game 5 with the series tied 2-2, they have lost the series. They are there because the Backlund line showed up on Wednesday. But also because Johnny Gaudreau played the hero in Game 4. Backlund was the only player to be on the ice for all three Calgary goals, except for Erik Gudbranson. Shot attempts were 22-13 with Backlund on the ice, and the Flames had around 73 percent of the expected goals. On Wednesday, the Flames made another important move, coming back from a 1-0 deficit to beat the Stars 3-1 at the Saddledome. The franchise that hadn’t turned a tied series into a 3-2 lead in almost two decades — the club has only done it twice since 2004-05 — finally did it. A period away from being down in the first round. Trailing against the Stars in a pivotal Game 5. “It was loud,” Backlund added. The Saddledome was quiet and it was tense, filled with nearly 20,000 fans who had seen this before.

Dallas Stars: Same Story in Game 5 Loss to Flames (Puck Prose)

The Dallas Stars trail their first round series 3-2 after falling in Game 5 against the Calgary Flames, and it's the same story for the team from Texas.

Through five games, the Stars have scored eight goals, with four of those coming in Game 3. I give goaltender Jake Oettinger all the credit in the world for the way he has played in these playoffs, but it likely won’t be enough to save his team. The bad news for the Stars is that they only mustered one of those four goals.

Dallas Stars Daily Links: A 40 Minute Effort in Loss to Calgary (Defending Big D)

The Stars put forth a 40 minute effort last night, but that clearly was not enough. Plus, playoff updates, a mock draft, and more.

Absolutely loved helping to create this Stanley Cup Playoffs beard project with— Greg Wyshynski (@wyshynski) @timjkavanagh, @lukeknoxand the ESPN graphics team. To get an idea of how things could play out, The Athletic’s NHL writers made picks for every lottery team. A running theme all season long, the Stars’ failure to not play hard the full 60 minutes put them down 3-2 in the series. “We’re going to go home, we’ve always been a good home team this year,” [Jason] Robertson said. But thanks to a late game collapse by the Stars, that streak was broken in Game 5: “We stayed with them for two periods, obviously.
