The fire spread into southeast Colorado Springs, forcing the evacuation of about 50 homes and shutting down the Colorado Springs airport for several hours.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says the Alturas fire in Security-Widefield was started by a sheriff's deputy's vehicle. Officials said the fire was about 15 percent contained at 182 acres as of 9:46 p.m. All evacuation orders have been lifted, though crews will continue to monitor the area for hot spots. Nobody was injured by the fire and no structures were lost.

Police have not released the identity of the woman killed in the Colorado Springs fire at Skylark and Falcon mobile home parks.

At the mobile home parks, high winds and explosions from propane tanks spread the flames to nearby units, a fire department spokesman said. Debbie Wilson, 56, and her roommate returned to find their home severely damaged with their four cats dead inside. Officials initially said no injuries were reported, but that a search of the burned homes was ongoing. I didn’t want to stop in case something else exploded,” she said. Authorities previously said all eight homes were at the Skylark. Authorities haven’t confirmed that the woman he saw trapped was the person who died.

The Colorado Sun first reported the woman's death Friday. Eight homes were destroyed, and others suffered some damage, fire officials said.

A mandatory evacuation notice was issued for a neighborhood southeast of Colorado Springs on Thursday.

The deputy was trying to make contact with a suspicious vehicle and drove across a field. Please note, travelers are not able to be picked up at this time. The grass caught on fire and the vehicle was destroyed as the fire ended up scorching more than100 acres. About 50 homes were evacuated.

"There were some fences that were burned and potentially destroyed, but we were able to protect all of the homes of the residents that were affected by this fire," he said. One of the fires — called the Akerman Fire — burned in open space along the 6700 block of Akerman Drive, near the intersection of Peterson Road and Stetson Hills Boulevard on the east side of Colorado Springs. As of 10 p.m., the fire was 100 percent contained, according to the Colorado Springs Fire Department. It burned 30 acres.

Localized extreme fire danger is expected in El Paso County today, mainly for areas along and west of I-25 where wind gusts could be up to 60 or even 70 mph. Even before a fire threatens your home, you'll want to have an emergency plan in place for you and your family. A couple of homes were damaged and some fences were destroyed.

A fire in Colorado Springs destroyed eight homes in a mobile home park. Another forced a shelter-in-place at the Colorado Springs Airport.

By 11 p.m., the fire had grown to 400 acres and was zero percent contained, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. The deputy was investigating a report of a suspicious vehicle and drove into a grassy field, where the car got stuck. Colorado officials have warned that 2022 could be the worst wildfire season in the state’s history. The deputy was not injured, she said. By 4 p.m., crews were battling a new grass fire — called the Alturas fire — at Milton E. Proby Parkway and Powers Boulevard, near the Colorado Springs Airport at the city’s southeastern edge. Many of the residents in the park are retired, she said. A helicopter helped fight the fire, according to a photo on Twitter. As the deputy tried to get the car free, the grass caught fire and flames enveloped the patrol car before the fire raced into the field, she said. A grass fire in the 6700 block of Akerman Drive in the Stetson Hills neighborhood led to the evacuation of 500 homes, affecting roughly 1,000 people, officials said. Firefighters were to remain through the night to patrol for flare-ups. Help me!” from a nearby trailer as the fire broke out. Colorado Springs FIre Department is currently on scene of a grass fire near Stetson Hills Boulevard and Anna Lee Way.

At about 2:30 p.m. CSFD provided an update on the fire at the Skylark Mobile Home Park. At that time, CSFD was reporting the Skylark fire was 100 percent contained after eight mobile homes were destroyed and propane tanks caused flames to reach up to 50 feet. The first fire sparked before noon in an area near Stetson Hills on the northeast side of the city. Evacuation orders were lifted for the fire near Stetson Hills Thursday evening.
