This was a theme from the start of the series and Game 5 provided a reminder how important neutral-zone play is between these teams. So focus on that and have the confidence that I know we do have, and try to learn from our mistakes and move past it and have a good effort tonight." "It's kind of felt like pretty much of the series that we've started with nerves and maybe not quite the starts we're looking for," Brunette said. Washington needs a win to force Game 7 at Florida on Sunday and avoid being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. "We've had a lot of good moments so far in this series and I think that we know what it takes on our good effort and our wins and all that. The Panthers might have to try to close out the series without Carter Verhaeghe, who will be a game-time decision after missing their morning skate Friday with an undisclosed injury.

"I don't know if we're going to be as aggressive as we've been in the past." Washington's roster to open next season is going to look strikingly similar to the one that finished this campaign. Like Pickering, he should become a key part of the power play during the peak of his career. Several teams will be in the market to add a netminder during the offseason, which means Vanecek and Samsonov could be targeted with an offer sheet. He's a towering presence (6'5") who's emerging as a potential power-play quarterback with advanced offensive instincts. None of the Caps' UFAs would represent a major loss if they leave on the open market.

In Game 5, the Capitals held a 3-0 lead too, but they let it slip away to end up with their own backs against the wall. Florida went 0-for-19 against Washington with the extra man, after boasting the league's fifth-best power play (24.4%) in the regular season. Florida dominated the league offensively from the get-go and topped out at a franchise-record 122 points. Florida snapped its 26-year playoff series drought with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Washington Capitals in Game 6 Friday night. After another playoff loss, the Capitals' proud core faces hard ... (The Washington Post)

The box scores will forever show why this latest Washington Capitals first-round playoff exit hurts so much. They led in the third period of Game 4, ...

The students have to be both willing and able, or the results will be some version of the same. If they’re going to be on the celebratory end of those handshakes, the group that heads to the locker room and wonders whom it will face next, there will have to be some younger hands involved. They were the Capitals of Ovechkin and Backstrom when they finally, mercifully won the Cup. And they will be the Capitals of Ovechkin and Backstrom for at least two more seasons because Backstrom’s contract runs through 2023-24 and Ovechkin’s through the following season. At some point — and soon — they have to replace the aging pieces by taking a heavy percentage of both ice time and production. They led in the third period of Game 4, they led by three goals in Game 5, and they led in the third period of Game 6. A couple of inches one way, and it would have given the Caps a 3-1 lead in the game — and probably a 3-1 lead in the series. These have been the Capitals of Ovechkin and Backstrom through all the postseason disappointments — the blown 3-1 lead against Montreal, the struggles against Pittsburgh, on and on. Carlson, the pillar of a defenseman, is signed a year beyond that, when he will be 35. The idea of signing Ovechkin and Backstrom, the franchise pillars who changed hockey in this town, to contracts that essentially made them Capitals for life felt right. The problem isn’t that the pair — now 36 and 34, respectively — can’t still produce. They’re still the most important pieces — Ovechkin and Backstrom and on down through the lineup, Oshie and John Carlson and the rest. Only eight players who hoisted the trophy that June night in Las Vegas skated for the Capitals in this series.

They came damn close from pushing the President’s Trophy winners to the brink. But Ovechkin didn’t get a single shot on goal until the third period as the Panthers really locked down defensively. But they ran out of gas a bit after the intermission, when the game’s flow tightened to an uncomfortable degree. Related, I think, to their aggressive play in the first period, the Caps sure controlled the puck well. With five minutes and forty-three seconds left in the game, Aleksandr Barkov got a layup to put the Panthers up. And the answer is Yes.

The Capitals scored on a wild double deflection in the crease. Oshie then got his stick on the puck in mid-air too, deflecting it just over the goal line. Anthony Mantha hit the puck out of midair with the shaft of his stick, causing the puck to hit off the crossbar.
