5 takeaways from Grizzlies' blowout win vs. Warriors in Game 5 (NBA.com)

Memphis showcases its depth and resolve to prevail in a dominant Game 5 victory against Golden State to extend the series.

The Warriors were eager and able to rid themselves of the stench, it was so one-sided. Said Green: “I appreciated the crowd tonight and the energy they brought to the game. By that point, the Grizzlies had the outcome on ice, 119-67. “I don’t go out there and try to be ’12,’” Jones said, referring to Morant’s jersey number. Something folks might not know is that Jones has led the NBA in assists-to-turnover ratio for fourth consecutive seasons. Said Jaren Jackson Jr., seated between Bane and Jones at the postgame podium: “Resume speaks for itself. Maybe it’s a surprise to the national media because we haven’t played on a big stage. Memphis already had 97 points when Curry and Green exited with nearly 19 minutes remaining, more points than the Warriors would get all game. Facing one of the NBA’s most talented and savvy playoff teams, with about two weeks of game-planning and adjustments baked in, and the Grizzlies facing elimination? Acting coach Mike Brown didn’t dazzle in his second consecutive stint subbing for Steve Kerr (Health and Safety Protocols) but he did at least spread more than half the game’s minutes on the bench. Jaren Jackson Jr., Desmond Banes and Tyus Jones each scored 21, more than anybody on the Warriors side. The Grizzlies’ record this season in games when their dynamic point guard, Ja Morant, was hurt or otherwise absent was 20-5.

"That's just been our team the whole year... Probably. No coach is worth 40 points in a single game. Stephen Curry bailed them out of Game 4 because he's Stephen Curry. He can do that from time to time. The Grizzlies were the NBA's best offensive rebounding team by a mile this season. Finally, in Game 5, he took his first loss, but boy, was it an ugly one. The Grizzlies made 44.4 percent of theirs. Getting Steven Adams back into the rotation clearly seems to have made a difference, and the Warriors, without a shooting big man, aren't punishing him defensively in the same way that Minnesota could. The Grizzlies made 50.9 percent of theirs. Memphis received contributions from up and down their roster as seven players finished the win having scored in double figures. Let's focus on the competitive portion of the game, which was the first three quarters.

Confident Grizzlies dismantle Warriors 134-95, forcing Game 6 back ... (NBC Sports)

A cocky Grizzlies team came out looking to extend the series, the Warriors were cold and disinterested, and Memphis ran away with an easy Game 5 win.

The Warriors have a tendency — even through their best championship years — of playing with their food. This was the cocky, fearless, infectious Memphis Grizzlies basketball fans have fallen in love with. Not Wednesday night, when they had 18 more boards than the Warriors. Most importantly, Memphis grabbed 18 offensive rebounds ( Steven Adams had six), giving them a second chance on 34.6% of their missed shots.

Can Draymond Green Power the Warriors? (Sports Illustrated)

The Warriors will need the best version of Green as they eye another Larry O'Brien Trophy.

Green has reverted to a more versatile role in the second round. He was a minus-45 in the 63 minutes comprising Game 1 and 2. The dip in scoring against Memphis is particularly notable. Green’s defensive brilliance took center stage in Game 4 as Memphis had one final chance to tie the contest down 98–95. Green jumped atop the key to meet Grizzlies point guard Tyus Jones, and he quickly maneuvered around Jones’s subsequent screen as the ball was shuffled to Memphis forward Jaren Jackson Jr. Green blocked the shot and began his roar to the crowd with the victory secured, embracing Curry shortly after in celebration. And as Denver tried to save the series late in Game 3, Green was there to stonewall Jokić once again. Jokić was ejected after a second technical during a blowout Game 2 loss, and his scoring totals across the series came at a far less efficient clip than usual. He’s at his most destructive when allowed to roam as a center fielder, wreaking havoc as a help defender as he pays scant attention to the weak link on an opposing offense. That’s what the game comes down to in the playoffs.” Jokić turned in his usual brilliant production against Green and the Warriors at first glance. He doesn’t bark signals as a back-line anchor as Green does. He’s fourth among rotation players this postseason at +15. Of Golden State’s 10 best three-man lineups this postseason (min. 50 minutes), seven feature Green. The Warriors’ dominance over the sport across the last decade will largely be remembered for Steph Curry’s rainbow threes and Klay Thompson’s magical 41-point night in Oklahoma City. But behind the triples, a steady engine remained: Green controlling the action on the ends, serving as arguably the greatest Swiss Army knife in league history. Green is a plus-980 in 4,198 playoff minutes dating back to 2015, the year of Golden State’s first title.

Grizzlies 'Whoop' Warriors, revealing some potentially fatal flaws (The Washington Post)

To reach the Western Conference finals, the Golden State Warriors must bounce back from the worst playoff loss of the Steve Kerr era.

When the Warriors were at the peak of their powers, they maintained a stranglehold on the action and exhibited an eerie consistency. “When you’re in the bathroom, you just grab the switch, push it down, and it just goes whoosh down the toilet,” said Mike Brown, who is filling in as coach after Kerr tested positive for the coronavirus earlier this week. Candace Buckner: In the NBA playoffs, tempers rise and pettiness rules Golden State still holds a 3-2 series lead and is a perfect 5-0 at home during the playoffs entering Friday’s Game 6 at San Francisco’s Chase Center. Those are good reasons for short-term confidence, but the Warriors’ persistent turnover problems and their wild swings in quality of play have been alarming. Morant led the feverish celebrations on Memphis’s bench, revving his hands like he was riding a motorcycle and shouting “Grizz in 7!” during a postgame interview. That world-beating crew is now a distant memory: Durant, the ultimate stabilizing piece, left for Brooklyn. Savvy veterans like Shaun Livingston and David West are gone. Name a facet of the game, and the Grizzlies almost certainly dominated as they pounded the Warriors into submission. Andre Iguodala returned to the Bay Area this season, but he’s 38 years old and hasn’t played in the second round due to a back injury. Memphis forced 22 turnovers, scored 50 points in the paint, registered 37 assists and won the rebounding battle, 55-37. “We’re going to whoop that trick together if we’re going to whoop that trick. Instead of a series-clinching victory, Golden State suffered a jaw-clenching defeat that revealed several vulnerabilities that could complicate the franchise’s hopes of claiming a fourth title since 2015. Green tried to make light of the Warriors’ predicament by spinning a towel over his head as he danced along.

Warriors look to flush, but learn from Game 5 blowout loss vs. Grizzlies (NBC Sports Bay Area)

By halftime, the Warriors had turned the ball over 14 times while only totaling 13 assists. Memphis took advantage and scored 25 points off Warriors turnovers ...

We have to do a better job of going and seeking a body and boxing them out early, and hope one our our teammates gets the rebound." The Warriors also watched the Grizzlies score 50 points in the paint compared to their 36. Memphis took advantage and scored 25 points off Warriors turnovers as they strolled into the locker room as a team on top, not one afraid of a second-half flurry from the Warriors. "We've had an alertness and an awareness when it came to hitting bodies and boxing people out early," Brown said. It's the Warriors' second loss of the series, and second straight game where they came out flat with the Grizzlies' best player on the sidelines. What was most concerning, though, was the Warriors' lack of effort when came to rebounding, especially on the offensive side. They were down by 27 at halftime, and the deficit grew all the way to 55 at one point in the third quarter. You make the necessary adjustments, and then you flush it. You learn from it and then you flush it. They were outhustled and outplayed from the opening tip to the final buzzer. "It's kind of like when you're in the bathroom," Brown said. "You just kind of push it down, and 'shoooop' -- right down the toilet.

This is not to say that younger, less experienced teams cannot win, but Golden State is a team that is notorious for overcoming adversity in playoff series throughout the years and in case you have forgotten, they went to the NBA Finals five times from 2015-2019, winning three titles in that span. “For us, what we have to realize is this is not the same team we were playing to start this series, so you almost have to make the adjustment in this series, for us, as if we are starting an entirely different series… “It's one game in the loss column in the series. Due to the Warriors' mistakes on offense, the Grizzlies ended up with 19 more shot attempts than them and they were able to get every single look they wanted out of their offensive sets. So I never want to put a limit on this team on what we can do because anything's possible.” Time-and-time again, the Grizzlies’ defense forced a turnover and at halftime, Golden State had 14 total turnovers!

A signature Draymond Green Game on Friday at Chase Center will make the ugly Game 5 loss a distant memory.

But we have the right mindset, the right approach, and all the tools we need to show who we really are in Game 6.” He did it a few times in the regular season. In the second quarter, where the game was lost – the Grizzlies won it 39-22 – he had four turnovers in eight minutes. The Warriors slumbered through Game 5, and many of Draymond’s passes got lost in the lethargy. A ‘Draymond Game’ is one in which he combines intensity and efficiency, firing up his teammates and the home crowd, disrupting the opposing offense and willing the Warriors to victory. But not a signature game, where he sprinkles parts of himself over the entire proceeding, with numbers that are relevant but not a determining factor.

When the Warriors come back and win games they mess around in, it’s so often attributed to their “championship DNA.” And while their unflappability is a positive quality, it should be noted that champions also know how to start a game strong, too. With Kerr sidelined by COVID, Brown is expected to stay in this oxymoronic “acting head coach” role for the remainder of the series. There seems to be more soul into his postgame comments than the game itself. He had a great view of Thursday’s game from the sideline. Yes, this is a Warriors team that needs active coaching. Junk defenses and aggressive timeouts are part of the Dubs’ game plan now. No, this Dubs team is running on a past reputation that simply doesn’t apply to the year 2022. Some ugly wins on top of ugly losses make it feel as if this Warriors team is not built for sustainable postseason success. The Warriors are too good a team to play this poorly, but they’re not too good a team to be beaten on the up-and-up. They dropped three, total, in the Kevin Durant years of the Dubs dynasty. The team’s defensive ineptitude has shown up more frequently as the season progressed. Their rotations have been a hot, ever-changing mess since the campaign tipped off in October.

The team that has led entering the fourth quarter has lost the last three games of this series. But he’s just 5 of 27 from 3-point range over his last three games after going 9 of 19 from beyond the arc in the first two games of this series. The Warriors are the sixth team in the past 10 years to lose by at least 39 points in a playoff game that didn’t end a series. Tatum will need to regain his 3-point accuracy for the Celtics to win this series. Jrue Holiday sealed the victory by getting a block and a steal in the last 10 seconds. The Grizzlies have gone 1-1 against the Warriors since Morant’s injury and are 21-6 in games their All-Star guard has missed this season. “We had a golden opportunity,” Celtics coach Ime Udoka said after the Game 5 loss. Warriors get blown out by Grizzlies in Game 5 (Golden State of Mind)

With Ja Morant sidelined, the Memphis Grizzlies blew out Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors to force Game 6 in the Western Conference Semifinals.

The Warriors pulled their starters with a quarter and a half to go, and the lead got as big as 55 points after Ziaire Williams made a four-point play at the end of the quarter. Kuminga is the youngest player to start a playoff game in over 50 years, and you know, maybe there’s a good reason teams don’t normally start teenagers. It was a weird choice to deploy Kuminga in Game 4 with Ja Morant out and Adams starting, and it was even weirder to do it a second time, especially after pulling him for good after five minutes in Game 4. Clarke was a terror in the offensive glass, especially in the second quarter. Curry had 15 points and four assists, and didn’t take a shot until nearly nine minutes into the game. Jordan Poole came in for Klay Thompson and hit a three, and it looked like the Warriors were crawling back, cutting the lead to 11. Adams tipped in a miss on the Grizzlies’ 7th offensive rebound of the quarter and Desmond Bane got a three-point play to complete the 14-0 run. In the history of the NBA playoffs, no team has ever lost a playoff game by 40 points and gone on to win the NBA title. Brown put in a starters + Kevon Looney lineup to stop the bleeding, and it worked briefly, as Steph Curry put up four quick points and Andrew Wiggins hit a three. Then they went on a 9-0 run early in the second where they got all their points in the lane or at the line, and Brandon Clarke grabbed four offensive rebounds in three minutes. Leading by 16, Memphis got a four-point play when Steven Adams scored through a Wiggins foul, missed the free throw, and Jackson grabbed the offensive board and hit Melton for a layup. The game was close for almost an entire quarter before Memphis finished the first on a 9-0 run, led by the outside shooting and defense of DeAnthony Melton. They shot 7-12 from distance in the first, with Jaren Jackson Jr. scoring ten points.

In Game 3 of this series, the Warriors scored 142 total points and shot over 60% from the floor, showcasing what they can do with the basketball on the offensive-end of the floor. For a championship-level team like the Warriors, this simply cannot happen and turnovers have been a problem for them as of late, as they are now averaging 18.0 turnovers per game in this series against Memphis.

Jannelle Moore on the Warriors: How to fix it for Game 6 (The Mercury News)

What went wrong for the Warriors in Game 5 against the Memphis Grizzlies -- and how to fix it for Game 6.

The Warriors should make a point to get those types of mismatches for Curry and Poole and let them attack. With two shot creators on the floor in Curry and Poole, a shooter in Thompson, and an engaged Andrew Wiggins, the Warriors aren’t at a three-on-five disadvantage on every offensive possession. In the first four games, the Warriors outrebounded the Grizzlies despite being smaller and also scored more points in the paint. Kerr is off the bench, but his stubbornness is being carried on by Brown. In Game 5, Brown didn’t bother to counter the Grizzlies’ adjustments. I understand the need to quicken the pace, and the need to advance the ball before the defense is set. Jonathan Kuminga was in the starting lineup for the third time Wednesday, but now he should not be. The Warriors should hunt Adams every chance they get and eventually play him off the floor. They are the only Warriors that can create their own shot and can facilitate for others. He didn’t even have the ball secured to pass the ball back to Curry for the relocation three. Still, the turnovers that are plaguing the Warriors in the series have been egregious. An off-ball Green would be more effective as the roll man in pick-and-roll situations. It is rare for Draymond Green to let the ball slip through his fingers as he did early in the clip.
