... We didn't win the wall battles, we didn't get pucks out, and as a result we had four, five minutes of extended defensive zone play. The Penguins had a 5-on-3 power play early when Chris Kreider was called for slashing and Jacob Trouba for elbowing just 24 seconds into the game. Lindgren returned to the Rangers' lineup after missing the previous three games following an upper body injury in Game 1 of this series. It was his sixth goal of the series. Mario Lemieux (seven twice, six) has the top three. “They pushed, we had a couple of extended D-zone shifts, and we didn't get it done defensively,” Sullivan said. Lindgren then left the with an apparent injury early in the second period and headed to the dressing room minutes later. “We played a good 60 minutes," Lafrenière said. “We were not happy with what happened in Pittsburgh," Chytil said. "We defended well and played a good all-around game. We played a really good one when we needed it most.” We did a good job of staying calm.

He created a turnover deep in the zone, sent the puck to Barkov and then went into a full sprint for about 100 feet of ice to find a spot to receive the return pass. This was the season of the comeback for Florida, which had an NHL-best 29 come-from-behind wins during the regular season. There had been three two-goal deficits in these playoffs entering Wednesday, but nobody had successfully dug out of a three-goal hole. Bobrovsky slammed the door from there, Giroux scored the insurance goal at 15:55. He returned briefly 20 seconds later during a stoppage in play and left the ice again. With the Penguins leading 1-0 after 20 minutes, Pittsburgh's Mike Matheson hit a goalpost 3 1/2 minutes into the second period. Pittsburgh pulled Domingue for an extra skater with about 1 1/2 minutes remaining. Letang made it 2-0 at 7:58 as he got a cross-ice pass from Malkin and fired a slap shot past Shesterkin on Pittsburgh's first shot on goal of the period. Fox got the Rangers on the scoreboard with 4:49 left as he got the puck inside the blue line, slowly skated up and fired a shot from the top of the right circle past Domingue's shoulder. Domingue then made saves a minute later on a shot by Artemi Panarin and a tip try by Lindgren. The goalie also stopped a slap shot by Trouba and a follow by Panarin two minutes later. The Rangers got their first power play of the night early in the third period and took advantage as Chytil got a pass from Lafreniere in the right circle, turned around and whipped a shot past Domingue to put the Rangers ahead 4-3 at 2:53. NEW YORK -- Filip Chytil scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period and the New York Rangers staved off elimination with a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series Wednesday night.

But the key was that he was on the ice opposite Fox bringing a physical presence and warrior like mentality to the lineup. They still need to get it done on the ice but know from the fore-bearers it can be done. Heart. It's what makes the name on the front of the jersey more than the one of the back. But behind that, he was good when needed and loooked more like the like Vezina Trophy winner than the one chased in Games 3 and 4. His bad turnover led to Guentzel’s second goal of the game, tying the contest at three late in the third. The other big story on the blue line was the welcome return of Ryan Lindgren. Granted, he scored the empty-net goal to seal the 5-3 win with 16 seconds left in the third. Trouba had a goal and an assist, the goal coming on a beautiful move on Jeff Carter and backhand from the slit. That uptick in output came late in the first and second, the latter timeframe when the rally occurred. After allowing Guenztel to tie the game 13 seconds later, Filip Chytil gave the Rangers a 4-3 lead at 2:53 with a power-play goal after getting to a loose puck in the right face-off circle and blasting over Louie Domingue’s. It was his first Stanley Cup Playoff goal in his eighth playoff game. Still not at the place that is the norm for him, but a closer version. Crosby was somewhat off-balance and his body twisted, partly impacted by Trouba’s stick hitting his skate, but Trouba did look like he lifted his elbow and primary contact was to the head. Patrik Nemeth dressed, but didn't play until the final 16 seconds of the game when the result was no longer in doubt.

Sidney Crosby's absence casts the spotlight, again, on Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

The hit Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba threw in the direction of the face of the NHL knocked Crosby out of the Penguins' Game 5 loss at Madison Square Garden ...

“That combination of Sid and Geno, they're two of the best in the league for 15-plus years. One of the best, and most recent, examples came back in that 2019-20 “fire” season. On numerous instances, Malkin has found a way to elevate his game in the absence of the captain. “You never want to see a player like that leave, but we've got the group to step up.” Even as recently as this series, one of the biggest questions after Game 2 was the ability to produce offense when Crosby wasn’t on the ice. Losing Crosby — a player who was named the Penguins team MVP and voted by NHL players as the league’s “most complete player” — is obviously significant. To that point, he had racked up 12 goals and 17 assists in 21 games alongside Malkin. “When you get a chance to play with those guys, it's a unique opportunity. All told, that trio scored 37 goals together in 26 games without Crosby back in 2019. When the Penguins slumped the last month of the season, they sometimes looked like a one-line team. The coach had no additional information other than to say the captain is being evaluated for an upper-body injury. Asked if he believed there was any intent behind it, coach Mike Sullivan answered, “Did you see the hit?

Rangers' Jacob Trouba took out Sidney Crosby from Game 5, will he ... (Forever Blueshirts)

Jacob Trouba had a monster Game 5, but his hit that knocked out Sidney Crosby may land him a suspension.

He did not return to the ice after that shift ended and no penalty was called on the play. Chicago’s Jujhar Kaira was sent to the hospital earlier this season and Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon also felt what it’s like to get caught by the Trouba-Train but was able to return in that game. On the play, Crosby gets the puck in the slot and looks down to control it. Trouba, who kept his head up on the play can be seen bracing for contact as Crosby picks him up late. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby looked like he took an elbow to the head from Trouba late in the second period. In an impressive performance, he was a physical presence officially picking up 3 blocks and 2 hits (there were more).

Jacob Trouba's Hit on Sidney Crosby Gives New York a 5-3 Win ... (The New York Times)

Pittsburgh leads the series, 3-2, but its best player could be sidelined for Game 6 after a questionable hit by New York defenseman Jacob Trouba.

“That’s a lot of minutes that the guys have to pick up and step up. But it was also clear from the first shift of the game that the Rangers were prepared to be more physical. But it was hard not to make the connection. The quick burst of goals from the Rangers came within two minutes and six seconds of one another. The violent blow was levied one game after Gerard Gallant, the Rangers coach, had chastised his team for being “soft” in Game 4 in Pittsburgh, a game the Penguins won easily. But that lead did not last long as Jake Guentzel scored only 13 seconds later to even the tally, 3-3. It was a hit, with uncertain intent, according to Penguins Coach Mike Sullivan, that altered the course of the game, and maybe even the series. Chris Kreider and Trouba were called for simultaneous penalties — Kreider for slashing and Trouba for elbowing, just 24 seconds in the game, and they seemed designed to set a tone. He went to the bench and sat, lowered his head, and then left for the locker room with roughly seven minutes to play in the period. To many skeptical New York fans, he also has a history of flopping in a perceived effort to draw penalties. On Thursday morning, the Penguins were flying back to Pittsburgh where Crosby would receive further evaluation. They led the Rangers by two goals, were dictating play, and the fans inside Madison Square Garden were quiet and edgy.
