Sidney Crosby's absence casts the spotlight, again, on Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

The hit Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba threw in the direction of the face of the NHL knocked Crosby out of the Penguins' Game 5 loss at Madison Square Garden ...

“That combination of Sid and Geno, they're two of the best in the league for 15-plus years. One of the best, and most recent, examples came back in that 2019-20 “fire” season. On numerous instances, Malkin has found a way to elevate his game in the absence of the captain. “You never want to see a player like that leave, but we've got the group to step up.” Even as recently as this series, one of the biggest questions after Game 2 was the ability to produce offense when Crosby wasn’t on the ice. Losing Crosby — a player who was named the Penguins team MVP and voted by NHL players as the league’s “most complete player” — is obviously significant. To that point, he had racked up 12 goals and 17 assists in 21 games alongside Malkin. “When you get a chance to play with those guys, it's a unique opportunity. All told, that trio scored 37 goals together in 26 games without Crosby back in 2019. When the Penguins slumped the last month of the season, they sometimes looked like a one-line team. The coach had no additional information other than to say the captain is being evaluated for an upper-body injury. Asked if he believed there was any intent behind it, coach Mike Sullivan answered, “Did you see the hit?

Dan's Daily: It's Still Dirty, More Penguins, NHL Playoff Coverage… (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

More coverage of the Pittsburgh Penguins Game 5 loss, and the New York Rangers dirty hit that injured Sidney Crosby. NHL playoff coverage...

The officials failed the game, and the underbelly of the ugly NHL culture roared. The Washington Capitals had a lead, but the Florida Panthers rallied for a Game 5 win and a 3-2 series lead. I’ve covered the game for 20 years, and I’ve seen a few things. It was an unpenalized attack meant to end the game for the dominant player and give the losing Rangers a chance. Nick Backstrom was not a happy camper, “We gave that game away.” Washington Capitals disgust. I know the difference between a mistake in the moment and a headhunter.

Crosby Being Evaluated for Upper-Body Injury (NHL.com)

Head coach Mike Sullivan spoke with the media on Thursday morning before the team's flight home to Pittsburgh, and provided an update on the captain.

"Geno, he's an important guy for us," Sullivan said. He's just a great leader both on the ice and off the ice. I'm probably stating the obvious, but he means a lot to this organization, he means a lot to this team." "He's a great leader. "Sid will be evaluated when he goes back to Pittsburgh with us today," Sullivan said. "But regardless of what our lineup looks like each and every night, we believe we have what it takes to win," Sullivan said.

Penguins Still Have a Path to Victory, Even Without Sidney Crosby (Sports Illustrated)

Lastly, fans will be looking closely at who is in the Penguins net; Domingue has played to the best of his abilities, but Jarry is getting close to a return. Evgeni Malkin, who is known for taking over as one of the league’s best players when Crosby is out, will need to step up in Game 6 as a threat and a leader. It’s very possible the Penguins will play Game 6 without their captain, but even without Crosby, there is still a path to victory.

Penguins grapple with unknown lineup ahead of Game 6 (PensBurgh)

Crosby? Jarry? Rakell? The status of several key players could be key for Pittsburgh ahead of Game 6 against the Rangers.

And even if the Pens don’t have the services of Sidney Crosby in Game 6, they should still be in a solid position for this series. The Pens’ depth is already being pushed to the limits without Jarry. Key defenseman Brian Dumoulin has also been a big loss, not been on the ice since Game 1 and not looking like having an impending return. We have a lot of depth at all of the positions. It’s not a bad spot to be in, especially since they won the first two games of the series in Pittsburgh already. Sullivan’s words of “significant progress” are encouraging for a coach who is usually very measured and under-stated in terms of progress updates on injured players. For a player with quite a history of using his arm to contact opponent’s heads, you can’t say Trouba didn’t understand the assignment last night.
