Bear in mind that even if we just get a Pixel Watch teaser during the Google I/O keynote, there may be more than meets the eye to Google's smartwatch plans. Assuming the images are genuine, it looks to be an attractively curved smartwatch with a near-bezel-less design and a couple of hardware buttons on the side. We've moved on to improvements with Google Search. Following up on last month's introduction of multisearch — you can take a photo and ask a question at the same time — Google plans to add a Multisearch Near Me improvement. But no, in that any Android 13 or Google Assistant talk during Google I/O might reveal more about the features coming to future phones. In a demo, a Google executive requested a song from "ummmmm.... Florence and the something?" The Google App is also going to add a one-tap feature that brings up more context about the website. Google Meet will see improved audio and video quality thanks to Project Starline, first announced at Google I/O 2021. Well, Google is adding a "near me" function to help you take a photo and see if that item is available nearby. The goal is to improve it over time with the rest of the industry. On stage, Pichai acknowledged that there are chances for the AI to develop offensive or inaccurate answers. Google is also pushing ahead into a future without passwords. Google announced that its auto-generated translations are coming to YouTube on mobile, that you’ll be able to just look at your Nest Hub Max and start talking to the assistant, and that your phone will be able to look at a shelf full of chocolate bars and pick one out for you based on what you’re looking for. Google went over its plans for Android 13, and the next version of its mobile OS seems to be going further with the ideas introduced in Android 12. Google is bringing back its Wallet app as a place to hold not just your payment cards, but your passes, rewards program memberships, vaccination records, and more. It also said the company is focused on implementing additional security features for its products by default, in addition to the concept of “protected computing” to do more processing on-device rather than sending data elsewhere. There are pretty much no details on whether this will be a product people can buy, but it’s certainly interesting to see more hints of Google’s plan for joining companies like Snap and Meta in the race to put AR on your face. Yes, Google teased the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro with a few renders, showing that the phones will have some slightly different camera cutouts and back panel. The only real hardware detail we have about Google’s upcoming device is that it’ll have a Tensor chip in it. Not just anyone will be able to try out LaMDA 2, but eventually, Google hopes to bring the tech to search and its other products (though it wants to do so very slowly). The next generation of Pixel phones is on the horizon. Like Google’s current Pixels, the 7 and 7 Pro will have two and three cameras, respectively. The company seems to be flipping its usual script for this phone — previous A models have featured a camera comparable to the one found on Google’s flagship Pixels but had weaker processors. Wear OS has long supported iPhones, but last year's Samsung Galaxy Watch4 was among the first to be Android-only. It's unclear whether this is a theme for the platform in general, or if Google and Samsung are outliers in the overall Wear OS market. However, when Google acquired Fitbit, it agreed to keep users' Fitbit and Google data separate—that's the case here, and so the Fitbit body data collected by the Pixel Watch will be isolated from Google. There are two fitness platforms on the watch though: Google Fit and Fitbit. Osterloh says they'll work together but that Fitbit is “imbued throughout” the watch's experience. Unfortunately, Google says the Pixel Watch will not work with iOS devices—just Android phones.

An upcoming feature in Google Maps is something Google calls Immersive View. It’s a sort of tricked out Street View that lets you swipe to move around in a CGI-rendered 3D space. Last month, Google rolled out a feature called Multisearch. It lets you combine elements in a single search query, like using a photo and text at the same time. Called Near Me, the feature lets you factor in your location while Multisearching, helping to sniff out local restaurants or shops based on photos and text. Google also laid out a variety of new additions to its software platforms aimed at protecting against cyberattacks. Multilingual users will be able to set specific apps to use specific languages, so you can search in English and tweet in German. Support for quick-pairing with devices using the Matter smart home standard will be built in, and it will be easier to cast videos or photos to more televisions, displays, and other screens in your home with additional support for more manufacturers’ products.

Finally, Google Play is adding a new In-App Messaging API for communicating to users that their payments have been declined. It will now be possible to combine multiple plans in a subscription without creating new SKUs for each combination, and more advanced logic is supported to enable custom pricing decisions. To simplify the process of setting up and managing deep links, a new Play Console page is coming soon that will bring together learning resources and tools in a single place. There is also a big update coming to the Android Vitals tool, which is used for metrics about app performance. Through this program, Google is also establishing a closer relationship with SDK providers to help ensure they remain compatible with store policies and help developers avoid versions that could cause problems for their apps. Starting soon, Google Play plans to migrate app signing keys to Cloud Key Management where they’ll be stored even more securely.

Elsewhere in Crashlytics for Flutter developers, the Firebase team has vastly improved adding the plugin to your Flutter app, now making it a simple two-step process. On the latter front, Google has unveiled the concept of “ Baseline Profiles” for Jetpack, which take usage data from your app to optimize the most commonly used parts. As always, Firebase is focused on its mission to make app creators more successful by making development easier and faster. A new beta program called “LiveOps” will allow developers to submit their applications and special events/discounts/etc. to be featured prominently by the Play Store. Google has said that apps using LiveOps on average see 5% more active users and 4% higher revenue. On the security front, the Play Console is also working to make it easier to keep your app’s signing keys safe. Jetpack’s new JankStats library does just what it says on the tin, tracking down and offering statistics about instances of “jank” or dropped frames. Additionally, for Jetpack Compose developers, Android Studio Electric Eel includes an optional “Live Edit” feature that allows changes to your code to be reflected in emulators and previews of your app in real time. Since its stable launch nearly a year ago, Jetpack Compose has seen significant adoption from the Android community, with over 100 of the top 1000 Play Store apps using the framework, including Twitter. Of course, while emulators have their advantages including keeping your app and code visible on the same screen, running on real hardware is always beneficial. During the I/O developer keynote, Google showed the next steps for Android Studio, with a look at the upcoming “Dolphin” release, which is moving into Beta testing phase. The previous version of live editing for Jetpack Compose was limited to changing literals such as in-app text and dimensions. On the privacy front, there’s a new ML-based “ Google Code Scanner” API for scanning things like QR codes and barcodes.

Android Jetpack is a resource of tools and APIs for developers to use to improve their apps. There are also new features coming to Android for Cars along with Android TV OS, but outside of a small tease, Google has only said that we can learn more by tuning into the respective developer sessions on May 12. Jetpack Compose Beta 1.2 includes several new APIs and tools for developers to work use within their apps. Other changes in Canary include a new google Play SDK Index to view dependency insights, Firebase Crashlytics in Android Studio, and a resizable Android Emulator. Android Studio Dolphin Beta and Electric Eel Canary are the two different builds that not only have creative names but their own share of new features. There are also new APIs for downloadable fonts, drag-and-drop for sharing data between apps, and better tools for benchmarking apps.
