FOX announces impressive post-retirement gig for Tom Brady (Musket Fire)

FOX Sports confirmed on an earnings call that New England Patriots legend Tom Brady has a spot as an NFL analyst lined up for him whenever he retires.

It would feel weird to see Brady selling NFTs and remaining disconnected from the sport he loves. Given the ratings success Romo has been, grabbing star quarterbacks out of retirement might be the formula moving forward. Even though he is coming back to the league for one more year, retirement can’t be too far around the corner.

Brady has plenty of interests outside of the game, but it's not easy to replace its role in his life. No one knows when that time will come, of course, as the man who has defied all previously established longevity logic only gave us a preview of what the world might be like once he's no longer on an active roster. Brady has determined his next pursuit following the conclusion of his NFL career: broadcasting football.

Tom Brady Joining Fox Sports: Winners, Fallout, Analysis (Sports Illustrated)

Fox announced this morning that Tom Brady will become its lead NFL analyst once he actually retires from playing. The beauty of this column being called Traina ...

- For months, I have said over and over on the SI Media Podcast that it made no sense at all that Fox would let Buck and Aikman leave after they were with Fox for so long and were thought of by many people as the best booth in the game. It worked in a major way for Tony Romo and CBS. It was a disaster for ESPN and Jason Witten. It was rough for Drew Brees and NBC. But personally, I don’t see how Brady isn’t anything but a smash success in this role. Fox said in its statement today that not only will Brady call games for the network, but he will be “an ambassador for Fox.” My point in taking the victory lap? I just don’t see Brady failing in the role. - The other huge winner is Kevin Burkhardt. Just a few months ago, Burkhardt was Fox’s No. 2 play-by-play caller. What may be even more important for Fox is that it will have someone who is a celebrity just as much as he is a football player on the broadcasts. Was Fox mad that Aikman’s representatives were in negotiations with Amazon? No one would ever admit that, but it sure sounds that way. I’ll be professional and save my victory lap for the end. - The biggest winner here, obviously, is Fox. It will have the greatest quarterback of all time calling its games. Brady’s Fox salary hasn’t been leaked yet (I’m sure Andrew Marchand will have it sooner rather than later), but you can be assured it’s massive. His appearance this past season on the ManningCast was excellent.

Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch announced the news Tuesday during a corporate investor call.

Tom Brady, Once Retired, Will Step Into Fox Broadcast Booth (The New York Times)

Brady has a deal to eventually become the lead analyst during Fox broadcasts of N.F.L. games.

But in Tampa Bay he has seemed to relax, showcasing a sense of humor and comfort with the media that Fox hopes he will carry into game broadcasts. After several years of cycling through uninspiring broadcast teams for “Monday Night Football,” ESPN finally spent big this year to lure both Joe Buck and Aikman away from Fox, where they had called games for 20 years. Players, and especially quarterbacks, have been courted for decades to transition to the broadcast booth at the end of their playing careers. Mike Tirico will take over for Michaels in calling play-by-play for NBC’s “Sunday Night Football.” “These past two months I’ve realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands,” Brady wrote. From these interactions, networks keep lists of players and coaches who they think will be good on television, and often begin aggressively courting them before their playing careers end. Speaking well during pre-game chats or five minute interviews is not the same skill set as broadcasting an entire game or talking for hours in a studio, as Witten unfortunately learned. Tony Romo immediately partnered with Jim Nantz on CBS’s top broadcast in 2017 and was a revelation with his play predicting abilities. But whenever he does retire, the Fox job will be waiting for him. Brady did announce his retirement after last season, but the decision didn’t take. But lately, former players have been immediately plugged into top broadcast teams, with mixed results. And that timing is very much unclear.

Tom Brady Can Be a Great Broadcaster, but Only If He's Honest (Sports Illustrated)

The legendary quarterback has an unmatched amount of NFL experience, but here's hoping he'll be more honest than most ex-players who jump to announcing.

What would make Brady truly worth the hype and the adulation as a broadcaster is if he’s willing to do what he did as a player and avoid the pressure to conform. The football television wars have taught us there is a stark difference between what companies think we want and what we actually desire. What makes Brady interesting as a player are all the flash-point moments in NFL history he has been attached to and how they color his rise to league monolith. His foray into documentary filmmaking was an effort to tell his story on his terms, which often paints Brady in the familiar fairy-tale protagonist role that we’ve been fed since his humble beginnings as a sixth-round draft pick. The one who has been creeping out in moments of humility since his departure from New England. Admitting the tuck rule may have been a fumble. If you’re bored, go back and listen to a game from any point over the last 10 years featuring a team with controversy surrounding it (search for “Antonio Brown” here). Or even a team marred by a recent losing streak.

The check-writers have justified it by pointing to the NFL’s massive and enduring popularity in a fragmenting, time-shifted media landscape. Tom Brady's absurd contract details with FOX Sports revealed (Musket Fire)

New England Patriots legend Tom Brady is making an absurd amount of money with FOX Sports for his post-career broadcasting gig.

Tony Romo and Troy Aikman’s “massive” deals with CBS and ESPN have now been lapped; combined, the two men still make less annually than Brady will whenever he joins the workforce. After years of taking discounts with the Patriots so Bill Belichick could improve the roster elsewhere, clearly Brady no longer cares about the potential effects on FOX’s payroll if he absorbs most of it with a megalith deal. TB12 has accepted a job as FOX’s lead NFL analyst alongside their top game-caller Kevin Burkhardt. And he’s apparently so interested in the position that he’s chosen to work for free!

Brady took it a step further by allowing Brown to live with him like he was a wayward child instead of a serial predator. Over the last 20 years, he’s left a mist of scandals in his wake that have made him one of the more polarizing figures in sports. In Brady’s new role at Fox, he’ll automatically be the face of their NFL coverage. Brady’s career has been a real-life Picture of Dorian Gray. Brady’s moldy personality masks the toxic path he’s taken to reach these heights in his career. For all that cash, he could be a bigger bust than Jason Witten or NewsCorp’s gamble on The Magic Hour. Whenever Brady retires, whether it’s in this decade or the next, nothing will justify this lead balloon of a contract. It’s also the reasoning behind the NFL giving Monday and Sunday Night Football the option to flex games into the primetime slot during the second half of the season.

Tom Brady's historic $375m Fox Sports deal shows familiarity ... (The Guardian)

The quarterback has the knowledge to make a good analyst. But it's his fame and branding the network is most interested in.

Brady has no contemporary in the media space, save, perhaps, for Peyton Manning. He is the most famous celebrity the game has produced, one of the few who crosses continents and sports. Outside of the Patriots cult of no-personality, Brady has bared his teeth a little and has made his personality more public. Some shill copper bands or the Itch Stopper. Brady will stay selling Football and Sundays – and will be paid like Russell Wilson to do so. And then it offered around a package to any of the advert-getting names in the business, settling on college football’s premier voice because of his Q Score. He is also the most important and impactful player of the last 20 years. Even as companies and sports scramble to try to replicate the success of the ManningCast, it will still serve as the second or third option. It’s a neat side project, something to show the cool kids on social media that you’re trying to be different. It chose not to take any risks, either to break the traditional construct of an in-game booth or to build around fresh names. Would the Gusgasm, in all its viral glory, not be at the top of your wants list? The game is the attraction, the announcers just help elevate or deflate the atmosphere. Hiring famous people does not necessarily help or improve the broadcast – often it does the opposite. The New York Post reported that Brady is in line to receive $375m across 10 years.
