Paramount+ May Prevent 'The Lost City' From Crossing $100 Million (Forbes)

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum's 'The Lost City' is essentially the only big studio movie aimed at women being offered up this entire summer.

However, both in terms of what The Lost City still might have accomplished and what else there is in theaters this summer, the theatrical exclusivity window should have been extended. However, it’s not a great look that Hollywood filled up last summer with F9, Candyman, Black Widow, Space Jam: A New Legacy, Shang-Chi, Jungle Cruise, Spiral and Snake Eyes while waiting for circumstances to improve for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, No Time to Die and eventually Spider-Man: No Way Home. Likewise, Disney sent a slew of original and/or diverse animated films (Raya and the Last Dragon, Encanto, Turning Red, Soul, Luca, etc.) to streaming or into theaters under compromised circumstances only to offer up Lightyear as Pixar’s first all-in theatrical release since Onward. That’s not entirely fair, as Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy broke out last summer, but it underlines the current predicament. To an extent frankly not seen since 2013, when Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy’s The Heat was one of the only big “for women/from women” major studio theatricals during that season, summer 2022 is almost entirely fronted by testosterone. The $70 million original is $5 million shy of the $100 million mark. That The Batman sank like a stone after arriving on HBO Max on day 46 (after grossing $370 million) may have been a coincidence, as the WB superhero flick lost most of its screens over the last two weeks anyway. Somewhat lost in the deserved huzzahs over A24’s Everything, Everywhere All at Once defying any realistic box office expectations and becoming one of the biggest-grossing non-tentpoles of the Covid era was the equally impressive staying power shown by The Lost City. The Sandra Bullock/Channing Tatum rom-com adventure has earned $95 million domestic after 45 days in theaters.

Stream It Or Skip It: 'The Lost City' on Paramount+, in Which Sandra ... (Decider)

Starring Channing Tatum, Sandra Bullock, and Brad Pitt, this is dumb fun and nothing more.

Bullock and Tatum develop enough affable chemistry to land a majority – at least 51 percent – of the jokes, as Pitt exits early lest he upstage them and Radcliffe gleefully oozes the snail-snot mucus of a sniveling child of extreme primogeniture. If this sounds like faint praise for a movie that puts in a little bit of hard work and achieves slightly more than the minimum, well, that’s intentional. She soon huffs out of it and into the waiting car of not her driver, but her kidnapper, Abigail Fairfax (Radcliffe), a squillionaire who knows that The Lost City of D is based on an actual real ancient lost city, and wants her to lead him to its treasures. Is it just me, or is it inevitable that Pitt is just making an extended cameo here, and that Loretta and Alan will find themselves contending with jungle fauna, dangling off a cliff, accidentally spooning next to a campfire, running in slo-mo away from explosions to the rockin’ ’80s sounds of Pat Benetar, diddling with gender stereotypes, standing in front of unconvincing green-screen effects, saying dumb things like “That’s my hoo-hoo!” and “Wait, I’m the damsel in distress?”, engaging in meta-commentary about schlock entertainment and possibly falling for each other? Now, if you’re the observational sort, you’ll note that Loretta seems to have found herself in a plot that’s a hell of a lot like one she might write – just spread that ironic brie atop a light table cracker and snack on it! That means donning a pink sequined jumpsuit, not murdering a Millennial social-media promotions moron (Patti Harrison) who speaks in hashtags, and awkwardly climbing atop a stool on a stage in front of a live audience that doesn’t really want to listen to her because right next to her is the megaripped hunktastic model for her fictional hero and book covers, Alan (Tatum), who’s such a tool, he makes Fabio look like Tatum’s character in Magic Mike.

There has, as of this writing, been no announcement of a sequel to "The Lost City," and any description of such would be mere speculation. Not based on a known property, and driven by little more than its genre and the charisma of its stars, " The Lost City" was a throwback not so much to the "Indiana Jones" knockoffs of the 1980s, but to the diverse film landscape of the mid-1990s, when a wide variety of mid-budget movies could dominate the box office. The success of "The Lost City" fulfilled the dream of many cinephiles the world over. As of today, "The Lost City" is available to stream on Paramount+. While certainly a trifle, "The Lost City" was reviewed positively on /Film (and elsewhere), called "a good old time at the movies" by critic Hoai-Tran Bui. Being something of a master of his own mind, as he put it, he was able to, in a superhuman display of mental power, shove his consciousness into the part of his brain that did not take a bullet. Her novels are all in the "Indiana Jones" pulp adventure vein, and just to keep her mind occupied, Loretta included a lot of genuine archeological detail.
