Special moments have followed Savoie from the basement of his family’s suburban Edmonton home to rinks in Winnipeg, Sherwood Park and Dubuque, a gym in St. Albert and beyond. He was always ahead of the curve and according to his dad “basically came out running.” Running turned into riding a bicycle with no training wheels at 2. Shane Wright is a tremendous prospect but he's not the be all and end all of your favourite team's rebuild, and there will be stars to emerge out of the 2022 class, as there are out of every draft class, that will likely rival him even if he becomes as good as he's capable of being. The alternative was a draft lottery with GMs logging in through Zoom in the wee hours of the morning from Finland, where this year’s IIHF World Hockey Championship is taking place. In a draft year where the consensus No. 1 overall choice isn’t seen as one that will change a franchise, Ducks fans might be fine with another less-than-desired lottery finish. But with a guaranteed top-three spot in tow, the team might be content with any offensive talent they can grab. Especially when they have 12 draft picks this year and 34 draft picks over the next three years. These guys will tell you they aren't worried about where they go, or where they're ranked (as Shane told the broadcast in his pre-recorded interview) but this is a huge moment for him. But there could still be some good pivots available toward the end of the top 10, and plenty of other compelling prospects if Detroit decides to once again pass on taking a center early. The Blue Jackets have now had 17 lottery picks in 22 years as a franchise. The Athletic's Scott Wheeler offers his insight on a draft lottery that pretty much went according to the odds and lacked big surprises. Canadiens GM Kent Hughes spoke to the media shortly after his team secured the first overall pick.
Montreal, the host of the 2022 NHL Draft, is set to become the second host team since 1985 to make the top selection. The Devils have the No. 2 pick.

The Montreal Canadiens are not only hosting the NHL draft in July, they'll have a chance to be the headliners after winning Tuesday's lottery.
Montreal was originally scheduled to host the event in 2020, but the last two drafts were held remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic. The remaining slots from six to 16 remained unchanged based on where the teams finished in the standings. No team could move up more than 10 spots. The NHL instituted two new rules this season. The New Jersey Devils shook up the draft order by winning the second of two lottery drawings and moving from the fifth to the second slot in the draft order. The Canadiens followed a turbulent season in which they finished last in the overall standings by retaining the right to the No. 1 pick.
San Jose Sharks will have the 11th overall selection at the NHL Draft on July 7 in Montreal.
There was also a 3.3 percent chance the Sharks would win the second lottery draw and draft No. 2 overall. The exception was in 2018 when the Sharks took defenseman Ryan Merkley 21st overall. New Jersey finished with the NHL’s fifth-worst record this season at 27-46-9 and had an 8.8 percent chance of winning the second lottery draw. The Montreal Canadiens won the lottery and will draft first overall. The Sharks finished the regular season with the 11th-worst record in the NHL at 32-37-13. This will represent the 13th time that the Sharks have drafted inside the top 11.

Additionally, only the winner of the first drawing is eligible for the first overall pick, otherwise it will be awarded to the last-ranked team in the regular season standings (Montreal). Should Columbus win the first drawing and move up from 12 to two, Montreal will receive the first pick. Due to the new league lottery rules set in March 2021, any team that wins a drawing can only move up a maximum of 10 picks, meaning only 11 teams are eligible to select first overall. Anaheim has selected second overall twice in franchise history, taking Oleg Tverdovsky in 1994 and Bobby Ryan in 2005. 12th Overall (<1%) 11th Overall (19%) 10th Overall (73%) Wright, an 18-year-old native of Burlington, Ontario, had 94 points in 63 OHL games this season. After a disappointing 2021-22 season where they finished with 77 points (32-37 record) and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season, the Sharks were slotted 11th heading into the lottery. In the last seven years, San Jose has drafted inside the top 11 twice, selecting center William Eklund at No. 7 last season and winger Timo Meier No. 9 in 2015. The only other time in Sharks history that they picked No. 11 was in 1994, when they drafted Jeff Friesen at that spot.
After another season near the bottom of the standings, the Devils landed the 2nd pick after the 2022 NHL Draft Lottery.
The Devils selected Alexander Holtz with the seventh overall pick in 2020. The 2022 NHL Draft will take place at Bell Centre in Montreal across two days. In 2019, the Devils were number one again, selecting Jack Hughes. In 2011, the Devils also won the Draft Lottery, but rules at the time would not let the Devils jump up from the 11th-best odds to pick number one. It's will be the fourth straight draft in which the Devils select among the top seven picks. In 2017, the Devils won the Draft Lottery, selecting Nico Hischier first overall. Another season without a playoff appearance has resulted in another top 10 selection for the New Jersey Devils in the upcoming draft.
