Bruins should stick with rookie goalie Jeremy Swayman in must-win ... (NBC Sports Boston)

The Bruins need to win Game 6 against the Hurricanes or their season is over. Jeremy Swayman is the goalie who gives them the best chance of forcing a Game ...

The Bruins need to give him some more help. The rookie netminder got the Bruins back in the series with wins in Game 3 and Game 4 in Boston this past weekend. Swayman deserves to start the next game. Swayman kept the Bruins within striking distance, but they couldn't trim the deficit until it was too late. Swayman didn't play great in Game 5, but he definitely wasn't one of the top three reasons why the Bruins lost. Tony DeAngelo's shot from the point found its way through three Bruins players and past Swayman off a deflection.

Analyzing the Bruins' Game 5 loss: Penalties, turnovers, and bad ... (The Boston Globe)

The Hurricanes outworked the Bruins as they rushed to a 2-0 lead in the first period, and now can win the series in Boston on Thursday.

▪ The first period got away from the Bruins, who were outshot, 10-3, from the first Hurricanes goal to the buzzer. ▪ It’s not difficult to determine why the Hurricanes scored a power play goal to make it 2-0. ▪ Puck luck certainly wasn’t on the Bruins’ side in Game 5. In his next shift, he was behind the Hurricanes goal. Next shift, more of the same. It was the first goal by a Bruins defenseman in this series. The Hurricanes have scored first in all eight meetings this year. Their best looks came in the first period, when they had seven high-danger chances (to Carolina’s two), per Natural Stat Trick. Marchand was kicking himself after this: He had time to cut to the backhand, fake a forehand, and lift a backhand. ▪ The Bruins spent little time in the attacking zone and the Hurricanes recovered quickly to shut down their breakouts. ▪ The Bruins couldn’t stay out of the box, though some of those calls were questionable, and they weren’t quick enough on the penalty kill. The Hurricanes skated away with the game, 5-1. For as badly as they are being outscored (12-5) at five on five in this series, they cannot afford to let the Hurricanes go 2 for 5 on the power play (with 11 shots).

"Not enough up and down the lineup," Cassidy said. The Bruins allowed at least one goal in each period, and gave up 38 shots to Carolina. After the morning skate, Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy told reporters that McAvoy and fellow defenseman Hampus Lindholm (upper-body injury) would miss Tuesday's game.

3 takeaways from the Bruins' Game 5 loss as they face elimination ... (Boston.com)

The Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes traded wins on their home ice through the first four games of their opening-round matchup.

“Certainly not going to put this on Jeremy,” Cassidy said. Swayman looked confident in front of the home comforts of TD Garden in Games 3 and 4. “He gave us a chance after [the second goal]. There was a stretch where we weren’t very good in front of him.” “At the end of the day, you need the guys behind them following,” Cassidy said. “Not enough up and down the lineup,” Cassidy said of the secondary scoring issues. “We knew what we were facing coming in here after the last game, and we’ve just got to do a better job on the penalty kill.”

Bruins vs. Canes Game 5 RECAP: B's backs against the wall in 5-1 L (Stanley Cup of Chowder)

Whoo boy. First Period: It started bad... Carolina Hurricanes · @Canes. That's the start we were looking for! Embedded video · 4:24 PM · May 10, 2022.

You got some of that in Game 3 and 4, we need more of that in Game 6 and 7. You need that effort to matter. - Oh yeah, and the Refereeing in this series, but last night especially, has just been putrid. You need Taylor Hall to be more of a dynamic presence. You need Craig Smith to start scoring. In lieu of actual change that could make the sport as a whole better like re-training or hiring different refs, I suggest next year before the playoffs we don’t say a goddamn word about how the rules are called in the postseason because if say...Charlie Coyle’s uncalled hold and Derek Forbort’s roughing penalty were any indication, you just can’t trust these guys to start calling the book. You need Erik Haula to score. Or do you go to Linus Ullmark, knowing he didn’t start the series well at all? That’s not a sustainable strategy, and the Canes knew it. He absolutely kept them in the game for large swathes of the first two periods...but when the floodgates opened, they really opened, up to and including that act of god goal. — PuckingOff™ (Jason Scales) (@PuckingOff)— PuckingOff™ (Jason Scales) (@PuckingOff) #LetsGoCanesup 2-0 on Tony DeAngelo’s one-timer @ 12:17 of the 1st. Gryz didn’t have a great one either, he was fighting it constantly.

He was asked if his bout with COVID, and the whirlwind surrounding his return, affected his game on Tuesday night. McAvoy said that he was sick and admitted to feeling tired after playing in Game 5. “I know a lot of you are going to ask questions about the COVID stuff, but I cleared protocol today,” said McAvoy. “So that’s where we’re at now.

“He made some timely saves to give us a chance to stay in it. While Cassidy said he hasn’t decided who’ll start in net for Game 6, he didn’t sound like he’s ready to make a change again. One area Cassidy didn’t share as much disappointment in was with his goalie, Jeremy Swayman. The rookie netminder allowed four goals on 37 shots in Game 5. Boston fell 5-1 to Carolina in Tuesday’s Game 5, going down 3-2 in the series to put them on the brink of elimination. They were the better team on it [in Game 5].” Boston had eight shot attempts (five on net) in the first six minutes of the game before Carolina defenseman Jaccob Slavin scored to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead. Cassidy switched up the lines throughout the final two periods. So like, the first goal shouldn’t happen if we’re on our toes defensively, too,” he said. That’s on me to find a way to get them going. Slavin’s goal wasn’t the prettiest looking goal. “The start was good. Through the first three games down South, they haven’t. And the contests haven’t been close, either.

It's obvious Bruins need to get back home. But then what? (The Boston Globe)

They've got to come back to PNC Arena soon. Not to mention, Charlie McAvoy's return seemed to skirt the NHL's COVID policy.

Like taking advantage of Jeremy Swayman’s clumsy first-period save attempt that allowed Jaccob Slavin’s shot to dribble over the line, giving Carolina the lead for the fifth time in five games this series. Raanta’s best and most important work came early in the game, when he made it clear that even an early aggressive start by the Bruins would go for naught. You can see it in their game, the way they are with the fans and everything, you can see that they enjoy playing in this building. And we’ve got to take care of Game 6 before we can even look towards coming back here.” Talk of the game was a subject that didn’t bring much joy either, nor much clarity. How McAvoy managed to make it back on the ice a mere two days after being placed in COVID-19 protocol, a return that seemed to skirt the NHL’s policy of a five-day quarantine from the first day of showing symptoms.

The decision on which defenseman to take out of the lineup if Lindholm returns probably comes down to Matt Grzelcyk and Mike Reilly. Grzelcyk had a rough Game 5 and took two penalties, while tallying zero points or shots on net. Swayman gives the Bruins a better chance to win that veteran Linus Ullmark, so it's not a surprise that the University of Maine product is getting the net with Boston facing elimination in Round 1. "He should be good to go, and Charlie (McAvoy), obviously, so I'll have a decision to make on the back end.

The Bruins can’t get anything going when they play in Carolina. Jeremy Swayman was letting in soft goals, Matt Grzelcyk was taking ridiculous penalties, and the “perfection line” had a whopping ZERO points. Defenseman and now enemy Tony DeAngelo had a goal and two assists for the Hurricanes. He leads them in points this series with eight. After Tuesday’s loss, the Bruins are now longshots to win the series according to BetOnline.ag:
