The videos and photos of the phenomenon went viral with more than 150 million views on Chinese social media platforms Sina and Weibo. Many of the users termed the phenomenon a bad omen over the Chinese government’s handling of the Covid-19 in the country. Videos show the sky over the port city in crimson color along with thick layers of fog. The people of Zhoushan city in China witnessed mysterious blood red skies over the weekend leading to panic among the residents.

A number of researches have been done on this historic phenomenon trying to understand what might have been the reason. In one of the video clips, an onlooker reportedly said they had "never seen anything like this." The sky did appear to turn red over part of the city of Zhoushan in China recently, as social media images and footage from a number of angles, as well as local media reporting confirms. In a report on May 8, the Global Times reported that the red sky appeared over Zhoushan on Saturday, May 7, and became one of the top trending topics on Weibo where posts gained more than 150 million views.

In a strange incident, residents in China's eastern port city of Zhoushan were left stunned as the skies turned red briefly over the weekend.
