And “The Minutes,” a pitch-black satire of small-town bureaucracy that had scored some of the year’s best reviews, received a nomination for best play, but was shut out from other categories. Best revival of a play is a contest between “American Buffalo,” “for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf,” “How I Learned to Drive,” “Take Me Out” and “Trouble in Mind.” “Plaza Suite,” a Neil Simon revival that stars real-life marrieds Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, earned a nod for its costumes, and nothing else. Beanie Feldstein, who took on the role made famous by Barbra Streisand in “Funny Girl,” was overlooked and the revival only scored a single nomination for Jared Grimes’ supporting turn. The nominations are welcome news for both “Paradise Square” and “A Strange Loop,” which were punching up against more star-driven Broadway shows and could receive a lift in ticket sales. “MJ” has battled controversy for failing to engage with allegations that Jackson molested children.

Musical 'A Strange Loop' leads the 2022 Tony nominations, with 11 ... (The Washington Post)

The nominations for the 75th Tony Awards were announced Monday morning.

These include “The Minutes” and “Take Me Out,” among the plays, and “Six,” “Girl From the North Country” and “A Strange Loop,” among the musicals. For best revival of a play, the nominees are David Mamet’s “American Buffalo,” Ntozake Shange’s “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf,” Paula Vogel’s “How I Learned to Drive,” Richard Greenberg’s “Take Me Out” and Alice Childress’s “Trouble in Mind.” The lack of a category for performance by an ensemble is felt keenly this year, as several plays and musicals in contention seem worthy of such a prize. “Company,” “Caroline, or Change” and “The Music Man” will compete in the musical revival category. The awards for the truncated 2019-20 season were finally handed out last September. Some 650 producers, designers, actors and other theater people will now cast their votes for the awards to be bestowed on June 12 at Radio City Music Hall.

A man had his photo I.D. out and in his hand as walked up to the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater on Broadway to see “Come From Away,” but no one checked it. I don’t think capital punishment is the way to go in any state, in any town, in any country in the world. Whenever somebody says, “Do you want to do this?” or “Come and audition for this,” you go and do it if you think it’s a good idea. I hope people take away that there is joy, to choose joy, to choose abandon, to go for the ride. At the beginning, the eyes I see over the masks are people who really want to connect and really want to be together to experience something. Speaking from her home in Wellfleet, Mass., Vogel said she planned to spend the day “doing all of my chores, so I can get on a train and come down to New York tomorrow, which will be exciting.” Here are edited excerpts from the conversation. When that’s the case, it can seem perverse to single out just one performer from a carefully balanced company, though the nominators did just that with their nods to Kenita R. Miller in “For Colored Girls,” Rachel Dratch and Julie White in “POTUS,” and John-Andrew Morrison and L Morgan Lee in “A Strange Loop.” The contest for best performance by a leading actor in a musical is likely to pit Broadway newbies Myles Frost (the star of “MJ”) against Jaquel Spivey (the star of “A Strange Loop”) — never mind Jackman or Billy Crystal in the same category. The first-time nominees Sharon D Clarke ( “Caroline, or Change”) and Joaquina Kalukango ( “Paradise Square”) are likewise the pair to beat for best performance by a leading actress in a musical — never mind Foster. No musical, not even the dreadful “Diana, the Musical” was skunked, even if some awfully good plays, including “Pass Over” and “Is This a Room,” found themselves forgotten. Of the 34 productions the 29 nominators were allowed to consider, 15 opened in April — six in the last week of that month alone. In the case of “The Lehman Trilogy,” they bestowed riches on everyone, nominating all three lead actors — Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Adrian Lester — and expanding the category to make room for them all.

Tony Nominations 2022: The 7 Biggest Takeaways (Variety)

"A Strange Loop," Hugh Jackman, "MJ," "Paradise Square": Here are the biggest takeaways from the nominations for the 2022 Tony Awards.

In addition to the disruptions of COVID, the show lost its lead producer when the Scott Rudin allegations led the mega-producer to step away from all of his work in the industry, including from “The Music Man.” Once the production finally did open, critical reaction was decidedly mixed. Three of the contenders for lead actress in a play (Gabby Beans, LaChanze, Ruth Negga) are Black, and so are half of the actors (Chuck Cooper, Ron Cephas Jones, Jesse Williams) in the six-person category for featured actor in a play. A six-name category happens fairly regularly, but this year’s category for leading actor in a play ballooned to seven, which means there were not one but two additional contenders with enough support among nominators to muscle in. Two of the five contenders for new play (“Clyde’s,” “Skeleton Crew”) were written by Black women. If any other show looks likely to benefit from the nominations buzz, it’s “Paradise Square.” That one got little critical love and has notably struggled at the box office, but it managed to surprise with 10 nominations including one for best musical. Now that the show is the most-nominated of the season — and the frontrunner for the award — that much-needed momentum will continue to build.

How the Pandemic Shaped the 2022 Tony Nominations Landscape (Hollywood Reporter)

From delayed openings and an expanded nomination window to recognition of the season's historic Black playwrights and major celebrity snubs, here are some ...

Another way the 2022 Tony nominations captured the unique nature of the pandemic season is through its recognition of Black playwrights. Despite weathering a nearly two-year production pause, Lucas Hnath’s reconstruction of his mother’s kidnapping, Dana H., is among this year’s Tony nominees that represent the season’s pandemic-impacted closures. More than 10 out of the 29 nominated productions running through spring experienced COVID-related show cancellations due to breakthrough cases of a day or more. The COVID-19 variant’s high transmissibility resulted in a string of cancellations that brought saw nine separate Broadway productions shutting down for single or even multiple performances in one week alone, during one of the busiest — and most financially lucrative — times of the year. Post-return, out of almost 30 productions nominated for the 2022 awards, around half opened, were scheduled to open or began previews between Broadway’s official reopening night on Sept. 14, 2021, and Feb. 1, 2022. Representing up to around 600 days of (paused) creative work, around half of this year’s nominees had already debuted in early 2020 before the industry’s stages went dark at 5 p.m. on March 12.
