Chef Mario Batali Goes on Trial in Boston for Sexual Misconduct (The New York Times)

Proceedings began Monday in Boston for the celebrity chef on charges that he groped a young woman in a bar.

He is also representing Alexandra Brown, who filed a similar lawsuit based on an incident with Mr. Batali during a selfie session in Boston’s Chinatown neighborhood. The case’s progress was stalled in part because of the Covid pandemic. He then grabbed her breasts, buttocks and groin, forcibly kissed her mouth and cheeks, and suggested they head to his nearby hotel, according to court documents. He called her over and suggested a selfie. The allegations in both the civil and the criminal cases are the same: Ms. Tene said that while having a drink with a friend at the bar, she noticed Mr. Batali and took his photograph. The woman Mr. Batali, 61, is accused of assailing is Natali Tene, 32, who has also filed a lawsuit based on the same encounter with Mr. Batali at Towne Stove and Spirits, a bar in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston that has since closed.

Trial opened Monday after Batali waived his right to a jury trial and opted instead to have a judge decide his fate.

He’s expected to be in court throughout the proceedings, which should last about two days, according to prosecutors. “My behavior was wrong and there are no excuses. “This happened to me and this is my life,” said the woman when asked by prosecutors why she also decided to speak out. “She’s not being truthful,” Fuller said. Batali’s lawyer, Anthony Fuller, argued that the assault never happened. A Massachusetts woman who accused Mario Batali of kissing and groping her while attempting to take a selfie at a Boston restaurant testified Monday that she felt confused and powerless to do anything to stop the celebrity chef.

Eataly has a Boston location that remains in operation (located steps from the now-closed Towne) and a Babbo location that closed in 2019. At the time of Batali’s 2019 arraignment for the trial that begins this week, his lawyer reportedly said that the allegations were “without merit.” The 2018 reporting of the incident at Towne Stove and Spirits was a followup to Eater NY’s initial report in 2017 detailing at least two decades of alleged sexual misconduct by Batali. While jury selection was reportedly set to begin today, May 9, at Boston Municipal Court, following pandemic-related delays, Batali instead waived his right to a jury trial; Judge James M. Stanton will decide the outcome. She alleged that he proceeded to rub her breasts, forcibly kiss her, put his hands between her legs, and invite her to his hotel room. “In the moment it was just so crazy, it was humiliating.
