The Capitals and Panthers played an overtime thriller on Monday night but a late lead slipped away for Washington.
In that second period, shot attempts favored the Panthers 25-6 and shots favored them 12-4. Samsonov stopped 29 of 32 Panthers shots sent his way as the netminder undoubtedly earned a start in Game 5. Coach Peter Laviolette said Monday that the injury was still of the day-to-day variety. It was the team's fourth power play goal in four games. And in the first period their power play gave them the first goal of the night to put them ahead 1-0. In the second period, and throughout the night, special teams were the name of the game.
Florida comes out on top in tonight's parade to the penalty box, with Verhaeghe scoring the overtime game-winner.
Florida had a lot of pressure on Samsonov and the Caps in these final few minutes, and Sam Reinhart managed to covert on a bouncing puck in the high slot to tie the game with 2:04 to go. Evgeny Kuznetsov finally broke the tie with 10:29 to go in the second on what has become his trademark sharp-angle shot to cap off a breakaway. The rush came after T.J. Oshie laid a massive open-ice hit on Sam Bennett, who turned the puck over to Alex Ovechkin (the hit went uncalled, and it probably shouldn’t have). Ovechkin passed to Kuznetsov to spring him for the breakaway, and Bird Man put the Caps up 2-1. Washington’s PK remained perfect on the series, once again stifling Florida’s PP. Fehervary actually got a clean breakaway chance as soon as he exited the box, but he had trouble controlling the bouncing puck and Bobrovsky read the puck well to make the stop on a five-hole shot. Both teams were having trouble getting the puck to the net, but the simplified game was probably a welcome change. The Panthers’ power play was much better this time around, doing more to limit Washington’s chances and keeping them from doing much of anything. Also, for those of you keeping track at home, this is the ninth minor penalty of the game. 4. Justin Schultz was called for interference just one second before the Mantha and Huberdeau penalties expired, putting the Panthers on the power play for the first time tonight. Alright, boys and girls and babes, time for Game 4 between the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers. The Capitals have the opportunity to take a commanding 3-1 series lead after their decisive Game 3 victory on Saturday, but don’t count the Panthers out just yet. 1. As expected, the game got off to quite a physical start and Garnet Hathaway and Aaron Ekblad were called for matching roughing minors just 31 seconds after puck drop. John Carlson fired the puck from above the right circle and it bounced off a jumping T.J. Oshie’s skate and past Sergei Bobrovsky. It felt a bit like the universe balancing things out after Ekblad’s weird bouncing shot in Game 2. 3. Anthony Mantha and Jonathan Huberdeau took matching minors for interference and tripping respectively, cueing up some more 4-on-4 hockey at 13:11 of the first.

The Florida Panthers got an overtime goal from Carter Verhaeghe as they earned a 3-2 sudden victory win Monday over the Capitals in Game 4 at Capital One Arena.

"You go out there, try to play a game plan, try and play a style and a system that doesn't change from line to line. Connor McMichael and Brett Leason don’t have a point, though they played in just a single game. But if you want to win in the playoffs you have to have everybody.”

“I didn’t like the hit,” he said. The Panthers feel the same way after clawing back in a series that has seen the teams trade wins. “Those are the kind of situations you want to be in as a hockey player,” Reinhart said. Given the combination of nerves and playoff inexperience that contributed to Florida’s struggles in the series, Reinhart’s goal may turn out to be the one that saved its season. “In third period, it was everything in our hands,” Kuznetsov said. Then, with goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky pulled for an extra attacker, Reinhart collected a loose puck after it bounced off Capitals forward Garnet Hathaway and beat Ilya Samsonov with 2:04 remaining in the third period.

On a power play, he jumped and deflected defenseman John Carlson’s point shot with his right skate, and the puck bounced past Bobrovsky. It was his second power-play deflection goal in as many games. He made a few point-blank stops in the second period, drawing more chants of “Sammy! Sammy! Sammy!” from the home crowd. His status for the rest of the series is unclear; he remains listed as day-to-day. After getting out of the first period with the score tied at 1, Washington was lucky to exit the second period in the same position. The Capitals improved to 5 for 17 after Oshie converted in the first period. The bright spot for Washington, which was outshot 12-4 in the period, was its penalty kill. The Panthers, who shuffled their lines and defensive pairings, were on their heels after a handful of early unforced errors but eventually found their way. With Bobrovsky pulled for an extra attacker — and not long after Garnet Hathaway barely missed a long-range shot at the empty net — Reinhart gathered a bouncing puck and got the equalizer from the slot with 2:04 left. The Panthers went 0 for 4 in Game 4. After T.J. Oshie’s hard hit on forward Sam Bennett created a loose puck in the neutral zone that Alex Ovechkin shoveled to Kuznetsov, he waited out Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, then sent the puck over his outstretched body as the crowd erupted and Kuznetsov busted out his bird celly. The puck beat Samsonov, dinged the right post and went in, leading to overtime. Yet as the series shifts back to Sunrise, Fla., for Wednesday night’s Game 5, the Capitals, the NHL’s best road team in the regular season, seemed unfazed.

It’s power play, penalty kill, power play, power play, penalty kill, penalty kill, penalty kill and it’s just, the period’s broken up. We gave up a little bit too much 4-on-4 but we pushed in the third period and got it to where we wanted.” I thought in the third period we got moving in the right direction and pressed and we got to where we wanted, but there’s not a lot of room out there 5-on-5.” “Again, they fired a lot of shots,” Laviolette said. The Capitals’ penalty kill held them off, though, as they escaped the period tied at one. “The third period was our best period,” coach Peter Laviolette said.

“I thought in the third period we got moving in the right direction and pressed and we got to where we wanted, but there’s not a lot of room out there five-on-five.” It’s that effort, Oshie said last week, that has led to the unit’s recent success. T.J. Oshie has flourished in that role with the first unit, with two of his three goals in this series — including the first score Monday — coming from that net-front position. Washington’s power play was streaky in the regular season and ultimately finished 23rd at 18.8 percent. The Capitals’ penalties have yet to hurt them; the Panthers — who had the NHL’s fifth-best power play in the regular season, clicking at 24.4 percent — are 0 for 13 through four games. The Panthers had four 30-goal scorers in the regular season, and those four (Aleksander Barkov, Sam Reinhart, Anthony Duclair and Jonathan Huberdeau) combined for 42 power-play tallies.
The Washington Capitals were just inches away from winning Game 4 but alas this series is tied at two thanks to the Panthers winning in overtime.
It was Verhaeghe’s second goal of the night at 4:57. The Panthers led in shots 32-16. The Panthers led in shots in the third 7-5 and it was evenly matched until the Caps had a chance to win the game… The Caps couldn’t get any shots off in overtime but the second Panthers shot was the one that won it. “In third period, it was everything in our hands. As I said, it is going to be a tough, long series so move on. Instead the Florida Panthers caught a break and took advantage in overtime to make this series a best of three.

The hit helped spring Kuznetsov for his breakaway goal. We were a lot better 5-on-5 and we were making plays. 1. After Verhaeghe’s game-winner, Washington head coach Peter Laviolette remained on the bench to argue with officials. The mood in the visitors’ room was just as notable. Added Verhaeghe: “We kind of got back to our game. “The second period wasn’t our best,” Kuznetsov said, referring to Washington mustering just four shots to Florida’s 12 in the middle 20 minutes. “In third period, it was everything in our hands.
