It was Verstappen’s second straight win, coming weeks after finishing first in Italy at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. George Russell of Mercedes (59 points) and Sainz (53) round out the top five. After 57 laps in Miami on Sunday, he accomplished his goal.

Max Verstappen used an aggressive early pass on Charles Leclerc then controlled the inaugural Miami Grand Prix for his third victory of the season.

“We struggled a little bit after five, six laps with the front tires, and then we struggled and basically lost the race in that stage,” Leclerc said. It was a strange event for Haas F1, the only American team on the 20-car grid. After the race, Perez said he’s started talks on a new contract with Red Bull but neither side is in a hurry to complete a deal. “And after the safety car, I really felt that we had a shot to actually take back the lead.” “I think it was our best race so far this year,” he said. Promoters never had a general ticket sale because of crushing early demand and the campus surrounding Hard Rock Stadium was the place to party over the last three days. Serena Williams ducked into Mercedes’ hospitality and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny arrived at the venue with Perez and spent most of pre-race at Red Bull with the Mexican driver. F1 will add Las Vegas as a third American race in 2023. Verstappen started third after Ferrari locked up the front row with Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. in qualifying. Verstappen now trails him by 19 points headed into the Spanish Grand Prix in two weeks. His first day racing around the new Formula One circuit in Miami was absolutely horrible. The 23rd win of the Dutchman’s career sliced eight points off Leclerc’s lead in the standings.

In fact, it only happened five times last season where a driver who led P1 went on to win. "It was an incredible Sunday for us." Max Verstappen put his head down at the start, slipped past Carlos Sainz Jr. by the first turn and then caught Charles Leclerc down the back straight for the race lead.

The bigger sticking point was a chicane at turns 14 and 15, which Verstappen said was better suited for a “go-kart” track. Verstappen was on his way to an easy victory before McLaren’s Lando Norris spun out and the track conditions were — as can be expected for a first-time venue — imperfect. Celebrities swarmed the paddock area before the race — “It was crazy,” Scuderia Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. said — and Dolphins roamed around the campus throughout the weekend. Red Bull Racing’s 24-year-old Dutch started in third, moved up to second place in the opening seconds and took first place — almost for good — on the ninth lap. “It was an incredible atmosphere and it was really incredibly well organized. Verstappen, one of the biggest stars in the sport, won the race.

By the time the smoke settled, Norris was out of the car and Virtual Safety Car conditions had descended upon the track. Sebastian Vettel joined Zhou, Norris and Gasly in retirement after heavy contact between himself and Mick Schumacher bucked Vettel’s Aston Martin into the air in turn 1. With this, Russell extends his top-five finishing streak to all five races of 2022 to this point, solidly placing the Mercedes freshman in fourth place in the drivers’ standings. Pitting under the lap 41 safety car allowed Ocon to secure an eighth-place finish, making up more positions than any other driver in the process. Perez finished just behind Sainz after spending the final leg of the race harassing the Ferrari driver for third place. Gasly had ran wide through the turns 5-7 complex and clipped Norris’ right rear while slowly rejoining the track. Verstappen has now won every race from which he has not retired in 2022, having failed to complete the Bahrain and Australian Grands Prix due to mechanical woes. The race got underway in 90-plus degree conditions, under a scorching Florida sun. The VSC was updated to a full safety car on the next lap, allowing several drivers, including Hamilton, Perez, and Russell to put for fresh tires with 15 laps to go. Perez reported a loss of power on lap 20, and Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner later confirmed to the commentary booth that Perez was dealing with a loss of around 20 horsepower. Mercedes’ George Russell pulled the most opportune strategy call of the day, opting to run 42 laps on a set of hard tires, making his first pit stop on lap 42 under safety car conditions. The top four of Verstappen, Leclerc, Sainz and Sergio Perez remained static until lap nine, when Verstappen made a superb exit out of turn 17 to pass Leclerc on the frontstretch.

AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda finished p12 and Pierre Gasly did not finish the race after suffering a late tire puncture. With a week break until the team travels to Barcelona, Ferrari will be looking to devise a solid plan to crush Red Bulls’ momentum. Last year’s constructor’s winners got off to a shaky start, but it appears the Brackley team has found their groove. Altogether, Red Bull will be happy with this result, as the drivers and world championship leads of Ferrari continue to dwindle.
