Five Questions: Grizzlies vs Warriors Game 3 (Grizzly Bear Blues)

Memphis deserves a lot of credit, but for the Warriors the main goal has to be to just keep chucking. The Warriors need to counter that with more off ball movement (specifically cuts), and trying to push a little more so they can get into their sets before Memphis’ defense is set. As for scoring in the paint, the Warriors have capitalized on the gravity that Curry, Thompson, and Poole have. Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and the Warriors as a whole had an uncharacteristic shooting night in game two. That said, it’s not all bad for Memphis. Brooks obviously hasn’t been having a great season shooting the ball, and the Warriors defense is built around daring struggling shooters to shoot. The’ve used energy and athleticism to compete on the glass, though they’ve also benefited from slightly more opportunities, as the Grizzlies have missed six more shots than the Warriors in the series. It’s possible that with Brooks out, the Grizzlies resort to shooters who handle the Warriors defense a little bit better. Despite having two of the best shooters in NBA history, the Warriors have never been as reliant on the three ball as people believe. Is there anything in the NBA more fun than a superstar perimeter player trying to solve the puzzle that is an elite defense? Two of the most exciting players in the league going head to head. Through two games the Warriors have focused on forcing Morant into low-efficiency shots, but that can only go so far. You hang to every play like it could decide the game, and it becomes so much fun.

"It's going to be even more of a grind," Memphis' De'Anthony Melton said of the ongoing series. Morant also found time for eight rebounds, but it wasn't enough to avoid a second straight game in which the Warriors earned an advantage on the boards. "Lot of adversity, a lot of adrenaline and emotion. "We've been in a lot of different series that's taken a lot of twists and turns," Curry said. Brooks will sit out Game 3, when Golden State will attempt to shake off one of the worst 3-point shooting efforts in its postseason history. That's because Game 2 featured an ugly incident in the third minute when the Grizzlies' Dillon Brooks leveled Golden State's Gary Payton II from behind on a break-away attempt, sending the guard crashing to the court and fracturing his left elbow.

Otto Porter Jr. finding shot could be Warriors key vs. Grizzlies (NBC Sports Bay Area)

Kerr could just go back to his traditional lineup of center Kevon Looney being inserted back in to counter the Grizzlies' rebounding.

The other night I think he might have taken one three and maybe made one or two shots in the game and he was a plus-17. All season long, he has referred to Porter as the "Perfect Warrior" for all the little things he does that contribute to winning. He knows his player wants to see his shot swish through the nets, but also knows that isn't going to stop him from playing his game. In two games against the Grizzlies, he has gone 2-for-8 from the field and has missed both of his 3-pointers. Porter will continue to contribute to winning, and space the floor. He's sticking to his word that he won't let his shooting define him, good or bad. The Warriors went 5-10 in games Porter played after the All-Star break. His offensive rating fell to 113 and he had a true shooting percentage of 53.5. But unlocking one specific part of his game could give the Warriors a major edge: His shot. Through the Warriors' first seven playoff games, Porter is averaging 3.3 points per game while shooting 30 percent from the field and 13.3 percent from 3-point range. Kerr could just go back to his traditional lineup of center Kevon Looney being inserted back in to counter the Grizzlies' rebounding. He even played with the closing lineup in Game 5 of Golden State's win against the Denver Nuggets to send them home for good, playing almost the entire final frame.

Stephen A. Smith calls out Warriors' Klay Thompson (SFGate)

ESPN analyst says Golden State's sharpshooter needs to show up in Game 3 in San Francisco against the Memphis Grizzlies.

He put up 15 more in Game 1 against the Grizzlies (6-for-19 from the field, 3-for-10 from three), and had just 12 in the May 3 loss on 5-for-19 shooting, including a hard-to-watch 2-for-12 from distance. I think everybody feels good about where Klay is." "Defensively after dealing with those injuries these last couple of years his wheels just aren't the same defensively," Rose said. Klay Thompson is shooting 29 percent from the field and 22 percent from three point range. Klay Thompson is at 13.5 points. "If Klay Thompson doesn’t show up, that does not help the Golden State Warriors," Smith said.

Heading into a huge Game 3 on Saturday with the series tied 1-1, it'll be interesting whether Kerr might deviate from his typical pursuit of these organic, equal-opportunity outcomes and at least try to manipulate some more Morant matchups, particularly in the first half, if only to start the drain on his tank earlier. This distributes the burden relatively evenly on both sides, and while this approach surely helps Curry from running into the same predictable pitfalls of other heavy on-ball superstars, the rub is a player like Morant can also bask in the defensive breathers he's afforded, saving most of his energy to, well, score 47 points. Here he's assigned to Wiggins, who doesn't move out of the corner as the Warriors run multiple actions until, fittingly enough, Wiggins beats Morant to an offensive board. That leaves Jordan Poole uncovered, forcing Brandon Clarke to rotate up to him, which finally leaves Wiggins in the corner ready for a catch and shoot. Under normal circumstances, Morant would switch onto Curry, but because he doesn't want to do that, Curry is left wide open at the top of the key, at which point Tre Jones has to rotate over to him. It worked in Game 2, when Doncic scored 24 points in the first half (with a staggering 45 percent usage rate) but just 11 in the second half as Phoenix ran away late.

Was Kings owner scouting Mike Brown at Warriors-Grizzlies game? (SFGate)

The Sacramento Kings are reportedly interested in both ESPN broadcaster Mark Jackson and Warriors coach Mike Brown for their head coaching vacancy.

Jackson, of course, is a broadcaster at ESPN. Ranadive wasn't in San Francisco to scout his color commentating chops, but he could have been in the building to grab a few minutes with Jackson afterwards. It's unclear if Brown would even take the Kings job, given how many coaches they've cycled through in recent years. What's more interesting about Ranadive's latest Dubs appearance is that the Kings currently don't have a head coach, and as it happens, two reported candidates for the job ( Mark Jackson and Mike Brown) were in the building on Saturday night.

Warriors offense carves up Grizzlies on way to 30-point win; Ja ... (NBC Sports)

The Golden State Warriors got into the paint and basically got any shot they wanted in Game 3, which led to a 30-point win against the Grizzlies.

Meanwhile, the hot shooting from the Grizzlies to open the game masked that they were not consistently getting good looks, they just made tough shots. The game looked different right after the opening tip, when the Grizzlies jumped out to a quick 10-point lead shooting 6-of-8 from 3. The result was 62 points in the paint, and the Warriors having a 76.7 true shooting percentage when both teams emptied their bench for garbage time. There was no report on the condition of Morant’s knee after the game, he will be evaluated more on Sunday, but he left the arena without crutches or an apparent brace, but walking with a limp. He limped off the court in the middle of the fourth quarter after tweaking his knee against a Warriors double-team. That sequence summed up the night: The Warriors got the shots they wanted against far too little defensive resistance.

Steph Curry and Jordan Poole combined for 57 points in the Warriors' impressive Game 3 win over the Grizzlies.

This is the exact version of Klay the Warriors were looking for, and he returned for a huge Game 3 win. He didn't see the court once in the second quarter, and didn't return until the 5:09 mark in the third quarter. Those days looked long game with the Splash Brother back in The Bay. Porter wound up playing 24 minutes and scored 13 points while going 5-for-7 from the field and 3-for-5 from downtown. In one sequence, he blocked Morant, turned the ball over and then threw down a big dunk the next time the Warriors had the ball. The Warriors then turned the ball over just twice in the third quarter and led by 21 points going into the fourth quarter. Porter only had two games after the All-Star break where he made multiple 3-pointers. With Gary Payton II sidelined for the remainder of the second round and beyond, Steve Kerr needed to find a replacement for his starting lineup. The Grizzlies started the game on fire, with their first 18 points all coming from 3-pointers as the Warriors fell into an early hole. He made his first four shots and stuffed the stat sheet. Kuminga totaled 17 minutes, scored 18 points, went 8-for-10 from the field and nailed two 3-pointers. Here are three takeaways from the Warriors taking a two-games-to-one lead vs.

Stephen Curry is having one of the quieter 25-point nights you'll ever see. It looks like Ja Morant is headed back to the locker room. That's a problem for a team like the Grizzlies that thrives in the frenetic chaos of transition, mismatch hunting and offensive rebounding. It was an occasional curveball, and one the Warriors most prominently used in the second quarter. If this is the version of Klay we get for the rest of the playoffs, the Warriors can absolutely win the championship. Without Gary Payton II in the lineup, the best hope they have is bothering him momentarily. That turned a seven-point lead—which came with plenty of Memphis momentum after Ja Morant sank a half-court shot to close the second quarter—into a 17-point gap that the Grizzlies couldn't overcome. Golden State has never really played this way. He shot below 40 percent from the field in almost half of his regular-season games. It's an advantage this Warriors team has never really had. Five Warriors had at least 17 points in the Game 3 victory, so it's not as though Golden State abandoned their principles against Memphis, but they do seem to have embraced a very simple fact: nobody on the Grizzlies can stay in front of Jordan Poole. Plays like this don't show up in the box score, but they're what made Poole so valuable in Game 3. With the win, Golden State has the opportunity to take what could be a significant lead in their best-of-seven series against Memphis on Monday night in Game 4.

"That's what we've been asking Wiggs to do all year ... put your head down and get to the hole," Green said. Coming off the first two games of the series -- the first won by one point, the second lost by five -- they knew that both of those games could have ended differently if their offense was a decimal better. Green said the Warriors were getting too deep into the paint, trying to kick the ball out, and "dancing" a bit too much on their cuts -- generally being careless with the ball -- which forced them to constantly defend Memphis in transition. "When you get your defense set, you come down with a balanced floor and you can get transition opportunities," Green said. He just understands how to play," Kerr said. "When you establish a tone where you get good shots, then the tough ones tend to go in." But as the Warriors started to stop Memphis from scoring, they settled on the offensive end. "I think it's a good look and I've done it before." "When we're getting good shots, the chances of Klay getting hot are much greater," Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said. They also made an impact on defense, holding the Grizzlies to just 4-of-17 shooting when they were the primary defenders. Kerr disagreed: "[It] was not a good shot.

Ja Morant tweet, Grizzlies comments add spice to growing Warriors ... (NBC Sports Bay Area)

What looked to be a growing rivalry has now reached unthinkable heights between the Warriors and Grizzlies, and it has only been three games.

Brandon Clarke played the dangerous game of calling out Green for his foul on him in Game 1, that resulted in a questionable Flagrant 2 foul and ejection, with several stars around the league sticking up for the Warriors' fiery leader. Jaren Jackson Jr. even trolled them with a "strength in numbers" tweet after the Grizzlies blew out Golden State in late March. They're young, hungry and testing dangerous waters of poking a bear that isn't afraid to bite back. "Yeah, it was a basketball play when we doubled him, and I hit the ball and I was going for the ball," Poole said. The Splash Brothers of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson for far too long have been mislabeled as soft for being the catalyst of a jump-shooting team, that just so happened to make five straight NBA Finals and win three titles. Through three games of the series, we're a perfect 3-for-3 in a player being ejected. The first question he received was regarding that same tweet, and in response, Thompson started laughing. Once The Athletic's Marcus Thompson showed it to him on his phone, frustration of a building narrative was obvious from the soft-spoken sharpshooter. He's one of the game's all-time greatest talkers and has turned the volume up on this series for much more than what he was ejected from Game 1 for. Morant walked to the locker room with a slight limp and an apparent injury to his right knee as the Grizzlies were being blown out with just over six minutes remaining. But the story of the night quickly turned from the Warriors' dominant showing to a since-deleted tweet and comments from Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins. More notably, Morant appears to have hurt that same knee early in the third quarter when contesting a Klay Thompson 3-point attempt, clanking knees with the Warriors shooting guard. Morant didn't take questions from reporters, and though he walked to the Grizzlies' team bus without help, he did so with a clear limp.

Morant injury intrigue, Klay being Klay, Kuminga's 1st start and more to know as the Warriors take a 2-1 series lead by blowing out the Grizzlies.

“As long as my shoulders are squared up to the rim, I can take a 1-footer, a 2-footer,” Thompson said. “They were throwing a lot of different bodies at him,” Jenkins said of Morant. “He’s got a lot that’s on his shoulders right now, and I think he’s rising to the occasion. “Klay has been in a little bit of a rush,” Kerr said before the game. The shot dropped into the basket after Thompson threw up a layup while falling down to the floor. “We did a pretty good job of stopping other guys,” Green said. So it’s not a joking matter that Ja is hurt but all the rest it is total B.S. in terms of the conversation right now.” “It was a basketball play when we doubled him, and I hit the ball and I was going for the ball,” Poole said. The Warriors cemented a 142-112 win over the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 3 of their conference semifinal series in much different fashion in their nailbiting Game 1 win and their frustrating Game 2 loss. So much that Warriors guard Klay Thompson dismissed the comments as “playoff talk.” But the Warriors viewed the Grizzlies’ motives through a skeptical lens.

If it’s serious enough to chase him from even one game, that would be a death knell for the Grizz. It puts the Grizzlies in a defensive no-man’s land. One cut seemed capable of breaking down the entire Memphis defense and the Warriors were cutting like crazy, both on- and off-ball. The Dubs’ spacing is a huge reason behind the success in the paint. What a concept! The Warriors often play a four-out, one-in offensive system with someone either in the dunker spot or on the block.

Kuminga on Saturday became the youngest player in NBA history to start a playoff game.

Kuminga has impressed throughout the season with the Warriors and that production is continuing in the playoffs. The team went to Kuminga in Game 2 when Payton was injured so it appears the seventh pick will continue to see a larger role in the series. Kuminga recorded 18 points, two rebounds and one assist as the Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies, 142-112, to take a 2-1 series lead in the Western Conference semifinals.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – MAY 7: Golden State Warriors' Jordan Poole enjoys a fourth quarter basket against the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 3 of a ...

Porter has no issue with doing the dirty work for the Warriors. He finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists and boasted a plus-30 in 24 minutes. The Warriors opened the second half with a 18-6 run and ultimately outscored the Grizzlies 37-23. The chant turned into a roar after Anderson was ejected when he continued to gnaw at an official. He was replaced by Otto Porter Jr. just past the midway point of the first quarter. “Early on, we were probably getting too deep into the paint, trying to kick it out, we’re dancing a little bit on our cuts and then just being careless with the basketball,” Draymond Green said. Ja Morant was the Grizzlies’ lone lifeline in the third quarter, scoring 13 of Memphis’ 23 points. Wiggins continues to be the Warriors’ most consistent player of this series. Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said Morant was being evaluated and inferred the Grizzlies feel the injury occurred from an intentional act. “He was going after a dribble and Jordan Poole grabbed his knee and yanked it,” Jenkins said. But with Memphis leaving lanes wide open, the Warriors dominated the paint, scoring 62 of their 142 points there. “The ball was really moving tonight,” Thompson said. After shooting a dismal 18.4% from 3-point range in Tuesday night’s loss, the Warriors rediscovered their offensive groove by being more patient and getting better looks.

Curry, who has uncharacteristically struggled from the line in the playoffs, knocked down all 14 of his free throw attempts – accounting for nearly half of his scoring. In addition to the stellar shooting stats, the underrated part of the accomplishment was near-perfect foul shooting. Not only did Golden State drop 142 points on Memphis – the most points the Warriors have scored in a game this postseason – to take a two-games-to-one series lead on Saturday, but the box score was also just as impressive.
