Perspective: Mother's Day is under attack, enjoy it while you can (Deseret News)

Since its inception, people have wanted to do away with Mother's Day — even the founder, Anna Jarvis. But the holiday is worth saving, even though it's been ...

Or we can honor a deceased mother by joining efforts to provide Mother’s Day flowers and gifts to people who might otherwise be alone and forgotten on the day. Finally, unless your mother demands love in a box, consider doing an activity with her (of her choosing) on Mother’s Day or in the subsequent weeks. Nor do you have to have a living mother, or even a good mother, to celebrate. But it’s worth noting that you don’t have to be a mother to find value in the day. But it was Hallmark’s co-opting of Mother’s Day and the rapid commercialization that led the founder, Anna Jarvis, to hate the holiday. Stretching to the highest rung of inclusivity, Hallmark even sells Mother’s Day cards for dads.

Mother's Day About Impact, Not Perfection (CalBearsMaven)

I am one of the fortunate ones. God has overblessed me by placing four amazing mothers directly in my path – both my grandmothers, my own mother, and my wife.

They get a meal when they might not have it, someone willing to listen when they need it, and encouragement that anything is possible under the most improbable of circumstances. We pray that the love and influence of other mothers found their way into your child, resulting in a positive impact while you get it together. What I have seen is that even the worst of mothers can have a positive impact. They soon come to realize that the goal isn't perfection and mistakes are nothing to fear. It's not possible, and it's a burden that would be too great to carry. None of them are perfect, and I hope they never tried to be.

Mother's Day is gaslighting (Salon)

We celebrate moms for one day a year while doing everything in our power to keep them down at all other times. By Alison Stine. Published May 8, 2022 7:08AM ...

While many parents worked from home, 71% of fathers reported a " positive outcome" of remote work while only 41% of mothers did, according to a 2021 study, perhaps because mothers were still expected to do it all while working their jobs from home: to cook, clean and be the one whose meetings are interrupted, the one expected to entertain children or keep them on school task. The determination of mothers cannot be overstated, but our reward for getting things done no matter what is fewer jobs and promotions, lower pay and abysmal medical care. We know that women, particularly women of color, are paid less than men, but mothers specifically are punished financially more than fathers, which some experts call the " Motherhood Penalty." Single moms are punished most of all. My name never budged on the childcare waitlist I put my son on when he was a newborn. Motherhood is seen as interfering with work in a way that fatherhood does not, and mothers are treated differently. Last year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, around 10 million mothers living with children in the U.S. were not actively working jobs, an increase of 1.4 million more than the previous year. COVID set back women's gains in the workforce to the lowest levels since 1988. New mothers are ostracized, isolated with the encompassing reality of caring for a newborn which some moms, like me, must do totally alone, often not by choice. But in the last two years, my longtime partner moved in with my son and me and has become a constant, dependable fixture in my son's life. As historian Katharine Antolini told the BBC "the floral industry, greeting card industry and candy industry deserve some of the credit for the day's promotion." I still hate Mother's Day. And many other mothers I know do too, in large part because it feels like slapping a smiley sticker on a gaping wound. I used to believe my dislike of Mother's Day stemmed from the fact that I was a single mother, my now ex-husband leaving our family shortly after our child was born.

The importance of Mother's Day (Shawnee News Star)

The Priscilla and Aquillas of the kingdom should be remembered, properly honored, and appreciated for their role in the work of God. Mother’s Day is an opportunity to honor those women who have had an impact on your life. I am exceedingly appreciative to my wife who is motivated by really helping people, really making her corner of the world better and really loving our two sons. I am thankful to Pam Robinson who had no reason to take an interest in me as a Freshmen at OBU but did, and I had a better college experience because of her. Even spending most of her personal money on legal fees in suits against the use of the name “Mother’s Day” showing her displeasure that the day had become over commercialized and misrepresented the original idea. In the early 20th century in America celebrations centered around women calling for peace and unifying after the deep dissension from the Civil War. In 1908 Anna Jarvis, who remained single and without her own children throughout her life, conceived of a day to honor her own mother and all mothers who had given and sacrificed for their children. There is a history that dates back to ancient Greece. In the late 19th Century “Mothering Day” was actually celebrated in the U.K. and Britain during the Lenten season as parishioners would return to worship at their home or “mother” church.

Harris: A Mother's Day tribute; to those who go above and beyond ... (The Augusta Chronicle)

Columnist Dana Harris offers a tribute to mothers, recognizing their effort and sacrifice in fulfilling life's most vital role.

It is crucial that you remain strong and healthy so that you will be better prepared to make the best choices possible as a mom. Of all the challenging job profiles the world has to offer, being a mother must be the toughest one, easily. Motherhood is truly a remarkable gift and a never-ending journey that can take you up the peaks of joy, through the valleys of contentment and right down into the trenches of your emotional limits. She can listen to a conference call, nurse her baby, cook dinner, fold laundry and do squats all at the time. And yet at the same time, it can be the most sacred and rewarding. The role of a mother is a mixture of patience, kindness, tolerance, understanding, discipline, purity, and love.
