However, the Broughton consortium - led by former Liverpool and British Airways chairman Sir Martin, and including the billionaire Crystal Palace shareholders Dave Blitzer and Josh Harris - was still in the race. Chelsea had until May 31 to find a new bidder as the UK Government's licence for the club to operate ran out on that date. Tennis legend Serena Williams was also among the backers of the Broughton consortium. Chelsea say a deal is "expected to complete in late May". With the Raine Group - hired by Abramovich to oversee the sale of the club - having chosen its preferred bidder, the government can issue a separate licence to allow the Premier League club to be sold. The proposed deal, announced by the club in a statement in the early hours of Saturday morning, has to be approved by the UK Government and the Premier League before it can be completed.

Conor Coady grabs last-gasp equaliser to complete Wolves ... (The Guardian)

The fitness coach Tony Roberts was frustrated by the “mad five minutes” in which Chelsea scored, but spoke of Wolves’ “strength and spirit as a group” and said he was “disappointed we haven’t won it.” Their dream of Europe nevertheless remains alive. Champions League qualification would make everything more straightforward for Boehly, both in terms of budgets and the club’s capacity to attract players. Given the patchy nature of much of the football before half-time, a lack of confidence in both sides manifesting in a curious game that at times managed to be simultaneously half-paced and frantic, he quickly became the centre of attention. He was studiedly casual on Saturday, wearing sunglasses and a long-sleeved T-shirt with sleeves pushed up to the elbows, one trainer-clad foot propped on the back of the seat in front of him. But as Conor Coady headed an equaliser deep in injury time, the reality dawned: Chelsea, out of form and out of sorts, still face a major fight to secure their place in the top four. Boehly was at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, sitting in a largely empty corporate box, although the chairman Bruce Buck joined him at half-time.

9/10 Lukaku let down by defence as Chelsea draw with Wolves (ESPN)

Romelu Lukaku scored twice, but it wasn't enough to earn Chelsea the points against Wolves, who came back to draw 2-2.

Was denied by a fantastic save early in the second period but struggled with his end product after that. FW Romelu Lukaku, 9 -- In the first half, he saw his first shot blocked, missed Kovacic's pass after making a good run, then kept Saiss off before hitting a decent shot that was saved. Capitalised on Wolves' mistake and slipped Lukaku through for the second goal. GK Edouard Mendy, 6 -- Had nothing to do until he made a good save to deny Pedro Neto shortly before half-time, though he could have been punished for pushing the ball back into a dangerous area. MF Reece James, 6 -- Often defended well, making a key header to deny Neto at the back post. His late changes weren't enough to hold on to the three points.

It saved the club from potential bankruptcy in 2003 and undoubtedly played a huge role in the Blues’ success on the pitch. Certain terms have reportedly been included to protect the club from a financial standpoint: As iconic as the stadium at Stamford Bridge may be, it is one of the smaller venues for a big-six EPL team. He was able to loan Chelsea the requisite funds to backstop the loans. Abramovich was willing to spend on the club since the beginning. At the time, Chelsea was struggling to make payments on a $92.5 million Eurobond. Chelsea had essentially mortgaged the future against TV revenues to pay for stadium upgrades. At the time of purchase, Chelsea was operating at a $33 million loss. Nineteen years later, the club has operated at a loss in 14 seasons (74%) of Abramovich’s total tenure. In 2019, his $3 billion bid for the club was rejected by Abramovich, who was uninterested in selling at the time. At the time of writing, Chelsea’s aggregate debt burden is approximately $1.89 billion. The ramifications for almost two decades of potential financial mismanagement will be borne by Boehly’s ownership group. This isn’t the first time Bohely has tossed his hat in the ring for Chelsea, either.

Todd Boehly was present for Chelsea's 2-2 draw against Wolves, and judging from that performance, his wishlist should be drafted as soon as possible.

Judging the Wolves match, it would be nice to get a suitable replacement for Timo Werner. He has had ample opportunities to cement his place in the Chelsea starting XI, which he has now done. There are other problems to fix in the Chelsea squad, but Rome was not built in a day. The lack of control in midfield against Wolves is something for Boehly to think about and mark as a necessity for Chelsea to return to winning ways. Although he did not have a terrible game, he was sloppy in possession and slow to recover. A point each was all the teams could salvage, but I guess Boehly can begin to think about where he needs to spend this summer. It felt like a heavy load had been lifted following Chelsea's official announcement of an agreement with Todd Boehly that came in the early hours of the day.

No-nonsense, brilliant defensively and scrappy – Chelsea are ... (The Athletic)

Chelsea's title win might feel underwhelming to some but their performances have been typical of league champions.

Sam Kerr has continued to bang in the goals but when she succeeded Kirby as Footballer of the Year, Hayes praised her attitude as much as her finishing. But in the remaining 18 league matches of the league season, Chelsea’s defensive record was remarkable. As Chelsea have switched between a back three and a back four, Carter has played practically every defensive role, from full-back on both sides to sweeper, and has never looked out of place. In the final third, it’s a similar pattern. She was similarly impressive in the goalless draw with Arsenal five days later. And this situation has been roughly replicated across the pitch. And this title win hasn’t been about stars hitting their peak. Bright hasn’t missed a game, but captain Eriksson — probably the WSL’s best defender the previous season — has struggled with injury. In the men’s game, Liverpool still have a chance of winning an unprecedented quadruple. But winning the title isn’t about remaining unbeaten, about huge thrashings or victory in the showdown matches (and Chelsea soundly beat Arsenal in the FA Cup final between those two league games, anyway). They only kept one clean sheet from their first four league games, then gifted three goals to Wolfsburg in a remarkable draw in their opening Champions League group game. Their defence has been superbly resilient, which would have been unthinkable at the start of the campaign.

Arsenal took the Women's Super League title fight to the last day of the season, but for the third straight year, it was Chelsea lifting the trophy.

Arsenal broke the deadlock at West Ham, returning them back to the top of the table, but somehow, it seemed obvious that Chelsea would go on to win. And it only took a few more minutes: Ji proved her quality again, sliding in forward Pernille Harder down the left flank to allow the Germany international to roll a pass inside to Reiten, who fired home. And entering its finale, it was at the top of the table that the action reached a fever pitch. Chelsea hit back when Erin Cuthbert was alive in the box from a corner and thrashed home a belting half-volley to send the packed home crowd into an eruption. Within 10 minutes, United went back ahead with a volley at the back post from forward Ella Toone. Arsenal substitute Jordan Nobbs sat on the bench watching the Chelsea match on her phone, roaring with excitement at the sight of every United goal. That set the stage for Sunday. Hayes stressed consistency in the build-up: It would be a normal week, players would train and play as they always did, delivering a much-needed win. Chelsea faced Arsenal at the Emirates, and the hosts edged to an important 3-2 win. It was the perfect way to end a landmark season, one that was surely the most entertaining in WSL history. The stakes could not have been higher: They were playing on the final day of a drama-filled WSL season, just a single point ahead of second-place Arsenal, who were playing 21 miles to the east against West Ham United on the other side of the city. LONDON -- Chelsea emerged from the tunnel for the second half at Kingsmeadow Stadium on Sunday with just 45 minutes to settle a Women's Super League season like no other. That's why, when Chelsea look back on this title-winning season, they will remember it as a period when they were pushed to their limit like never before.

Emma Hayes lauds 'outrageous' Sam Kerr volley after Chelsea win ... (The Guardian)

Kerr scored twice against Manchester United in a decisive 4-2 win, with her manager calling her second goal 'world class' amid Chelsea's title celebrations.

“I said: ‘We’re not winning yet, it’s 2-2 not 3-2.’ But that’s confidence then, and I think once that set in, these guys know better, it was a good response from the dressing room.” “I wanted to give the team the opportunity to try and see if we could dig something out. I said: ‘Come to Chelsea and you’ll win trophies,’ and I can sit here confidently and say we both made the right decision. “I really nearly did make subs [on] 30 minutes,” she said. Her second was even more special, controlled with her chest before she turned and looped a volley over the United goalkeeper Mary Earps. “The second one was world-class, it was outrageous, audacious,” the manager, Emma Hayes, said.
