Bruins owe Game 3 win to Derek Forbort's fantastic defense, penalty ... (NBC Sports Boston)

The Bruins were very appreciative of Derek Forbort's defensive effort, especially on the penalty kill, in their Game 3 win over the Hurricanes.

These guys stepping up in Lindholm's absence was a huge factor in the Bruins getting their first win of Round 1. Forbort played an exceptional game in all situations, but the penalty kill is where he really shined. Sometimes those guys who eat pucks and play hard like that don't get the credit they deserve, but it's great that he's getting the recognition because you don't win without guys like that." Those are the guys you win with in the playoffs. You need to have guys who are willing to put their body on the line and risk getting hurt every night if you want to go deep. "He's one of those guys who plays the game that guys don't want to play.

BOSTON — It's a huge compliment when one of the most respected players in the NHL compares you to Carey Price and Tuukka Rask.

“It was one of the things I learned at a young age, trying to follow in the footsteps of Scott Gomez. When I first turned pro, I learned from Scotty that we take care of our own. “He’s a true Bruin.” The sky’s the limit for Sway.” “He’s a good Alaskan kid with a good family. “It was the first time I was able to shoot on him, and I was like, ‘Holy (expletive). This kid’s pretty good.’ You realize this kid is a stud. Swayman and Ullmark quickly built chemistry this season and it was evident the tandem was working. “He’s consistent and a good pro for a young guy. Both turned pro in the Bruins organization. “That’s his demeanor and that won’t change,” Cassidy said. He showcases his 6-foot-3 and 200-pound frame with athleticism in the crease. “He reminds me of Tuukka. He reminds me of Carey Price with that calm demeanor. “That was special,” he said of his first playoff start.

The glass was replaced later in the period. Foley was alert as he was escorted off the ice. You have to be able to have guys that are willing to put their bodies on the line every night and risk getting hurt every night if you want to go deep and he’s a huge reason. He has the drive and the will, the want to be a great player for this team. And I think he was excited for the opportunity.” With the Bruins holding a 3-1 lead late in the second period, Forbort blocked three straight shots by Andrei Svechnikov on a power play. Forbort blocked a career-playoff-high nine shots, including six on the penalty kill. And those are the guys that you win with in the playoffs. “I thought he played great,” Brad Marchand said. The farther we go along, some of that will get tested, obviously, for a young guy. “And playoffs is a whole other level.” “And I think that will change.

Bruins takeaways: B's bounce back with impressive Game 3 win vs ... (NBC Sports Boston)

Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak finished first and second, respectively, in scoring for the Bruins during the regular season, but both of them were held ...

This was the pivotal play of the game as it fired up both the Bruins and the crowd. The Bruins allowed two power-play goals in their Game 2 defeat. The Bruins not only killed off that penalty, they tallied a shorthanded goal to even the score. Marchand and Pastrnak both picked up assists on Taylor Hall's power-play goal in the third period that increased Boston's lead to 4-1. Boston's first line (plus Hall) responded Friday night, and that resurgence must continue if the B's are going to even the series this weekend. But the Bruins responded with four unanswered goals and protected that lead with strong penalty killing and a very good performance from rookie goalie Jeremy Swayman.

Marchand’s go-ahead goal, in particular, counted as the first time the Bruins had a lead against Carolina all season. “It’s two great hockey teams facing each other in the playoffs.” David Pastrnak gave the Bruins some insurance with a power-play tally at 14:53 of the second. The B’s got their first lead of the entire series on Marchand’s early second-period goal. Vincent Trocheck scored the game’s first goal at 9:17 of the first after a shot from the point produced a big rebound. “When [DeBrusk] and [Coyle] made that play shorthanded to get us back in the game, it just changed our whole demeanor,” Marchand said.

Kind of been a little while since I've felt that into a game," said Marchand. "I think the importance of the situation that you're in, it hit us all. It's a good lesson for us to continue to learn and again, we need to keep playing like that." Puts his body in harm's way," said Marchand. "You have to be able to have guys that are willing to put their bodies on the line every night and risk getting hurt every night if you wanna go deep. That's what makes a well-run machine, and I think that was good." I think he was excited for the opportunity, gotta give him a lot of credit." "He really showed his value tonight," said Cassidy. "He's a popular guy. It took a while and a lot of patience, so it was a big one and hopefully we can take over from now." "I think our group is good at that because of the veteran guys that have been around. He made, obviously, a great play and way to stick with it." I think it felt good to know that we can come back in those situations, we can respond the way we have in the past. Feeling Special: In addition to Coyle's shorthanded marker and a perfect 5-for-5 showing on the penalty kill, the Bruins' power-play finally broke through for a pair of goals in five opportunities. "Some of our guys have been through a lot," said Cassidy. "I am getting farther along myself with some different series.

Recap: Bruins surge on special teams to top Hurricanes, 4-2, in ... (Stanley Cup of Chowder)

The Bruins netted two power-play goals and a shorthanded tally in their win over Carolina!

The Hurricanes began to press and eventually cut into their deficit with under nine minutes remaining with a long shot from the blue line by Jaccob Slavin. The B’s held on for the last few minutes with Pyotr Kochetkov pulled and took Game 3. The fourth line was physical throughout the 60 minutes and helped draw penalties and the top six forwards added three tallies with one 5v5 goal and two power plays. In particular, Derek Forbort was an unsung hero with the numerous blocked shots he sacrificed his body for and not allowing Carolina to get many shots through. The Bruins had many players contribute tonight in different ways. Carolina continued to carry the play and executed better puck movement in the offensive zone. (We wish the official all the best!) That goal have the Bruins some energy and life back. The Bruins cushioned their lead at 4:08 of the third period with their second power-play goal of the night. The official needed medical attention which delayed the game. For the Bruins, they responded after a slower start than they intended to open the game with. The PK, along with the power play obviously, contributed largely to the win tonight.

The Bruins offense finally broke through against a stingy Hurricanes defense in Game 3, and that could provide a huge mental boost for the B's as this ...

Therefore, the Bruins cannot rely on special teams to provide the bulk of their scoring. One area still a bit concerning for the Bruins offensively is their 5-on-5 production. This sequence was the turning point in the game as Boston captured the momentum and never gave it back. The Bruins' puck movement was crisper, their zone entries were cleaner, they won more faceoffs and they were more aggressive in getting pucks on Carolina's rookie netminder. It feels good to put up a few goals tonight, but we have to prepare again the same way that we did but even better, and try to do it again." The way they play above guys and create turnovers all over the ice.

Need to Know: Bruins vs. Hurricanes | Game 4 (NHL.com)

BOSTON - The Bruins are back in their opening-round series against the Carolina Hurricanes, but they are keeping things in perspective as they gear up for ...

"I think last year when we brought him in, we used him there," said Cassidy. "And there's a little more creativity in this game when he goes to the middle. Wagner, meanwhile, landed two hits and a shot on goal in 9:32 of ice time in his return to the lineup. We'd like to think it wouldn't - guys are of high character in our organization - but it happened and he didn't have that attitude at all. "Chris just showed a willingness to get involved and play to his strengths," Cassidy said of Wagner's 11-hit output against the Maple Leafs. "If someone gets hurt or we need a boost, can you go in and do what you your resume says you can do? "He's like, 'I'm going to earn my spot if there is one.' And sure enough, Game 3, there was one. From there, it just became second nature I guess," said Forbort. "Everyone on our team is willing to block shots, especially at this time of the year. It doesn't really matter - if anything, it gives me confidence if I have to go back to the right side or play the right side." He's been on the right most of the year. So, it's stay in the moment…that was the thinking." "When you go back and forth, I think most guys can handle it if they've done both like he has. Craig Smith was on the right side with Taylor Hall and Erik Haula. While they hope that momentum is now on their side after a 4-2 victory in Game 3 on Friday night, they still trail their first-round matchup, 2-1.
