A 'Grey's Anatomy' scandal and the downsides of 'lived experience' (The Washington Post)

When personal experience is treated like a professional trump card, it becomes an invitation to fraud.

Because it was a current and ongoing thing, Finch’s “lived experience” topped even that of other writers in the room, leading actual cancer survivors to avoid weighing in on potential cancer-based plotlines. The second is whether the lived experience that claims to inform such authenticity is more valuable than, say, standard research. Rather, it was about whether Cummins had any right to tell the story, whether her lived experience aligned with the book’s depictions of the refugees fleeing cartel violence in Mexico. You really have to read the whole series, but the short version is this: A writer on Shonda Rhimes’s hit hospital drama seems to have invented not only having cancer but also having been the survivor of abuse, lifting the life story of a woman she met in therapy and then married. You see that at work in Vanity Fair’s two-part series on Elisabeth Finch, a writer for “Grey’s Anatomy.” Finch used the various dramas and illnesses she claimed to have suffered to fuel her career. The desire for authenticity in the arts is understandable.

In fact, it’s one of the loose ends that fans want the writers to resolve before the show ends. And it seemed that he might go the distance and remain the only other doctor to start as an intern with her. That said, Karev disappears in Season 16, and his wife Jo fears the worst. Instead, she states she came to an agreement with Rhimes to spend more time with her adopted daughter Naleigh, per Entertainment Weekly. Heigl has since told GMA she regrets the drama she caused in that period but has not returned. Writers have done their best to give fans a taste of Cristina’s presence with texts between her and Mer over the years, including mentions of what the fabled doctor is now up to. However, Heigl did not return on-screen for that event and has not been on the show since her initial departure. She shone in another two seasons before being written off at the same time as April Kepner (Sarah Drew). We see sweet moments with her and Sofia, as well as some new love interests for the pediatric surgeon. The orthopedic surgeon was a fan favorite from Season 2 until Season 12 when she left Grey-Sloan for New York. Most viewers blamed the cut on the LGBTQ storyline between Smith’s character and Callie, though show creator Shonda Rhimes denied that in a statement to Entertainment Weekly. Others blamed it on the way fans complained about several aspects of Erica’s character. Smith’s departure from the show was sudden — the actor became a series regular in season 5 but was gone by the seventh episode, according to IMDb. According to the actor, “I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant [the honor,]” Good Morning America reported. However, one year later, she asked the awards show to withdraw her name from consideration a second time.

Grey's Anatomy: 10 Hidden Details Redditors Found In The Series (Screen Rant)

Grey's Anatomy is the gift that keeps on giving, and the show's hidden messages and cinematic parallels require a full-on Reddit investigation.

Redditor mmfq-death posted about a possible shoutout to the long-running CW show, Supernatural. The fan shared that in Grey's season 4, "A guy comes into the hospital with his son showing up with someone's severed arm in a bag. It's incredible to think that the shows' writers were in cahoots, since they aired on different networks. Another Redditor realized that there more be even more Rhimes Easter eggs to be discovered throughout the show's 18 seasons. So, they had to go out of their way to film this there as an easter egg to the fans." Reddit user studiouscub caught a subtle nod to the show's iconic creator Shonda Rhimes in Season 6. Redditor whitekat29 responded, "It's the bridge that leads to the chief's office." Other Redditors with experience in constructing film and theater sets confirmed that it can be a common practice to add random details to set pieces that make the crew smile. ConspiracyRick saw even more allusions to early seasons in the storyline surrounding a new batch of Grey-Sloane interns. "This was the first thing I thought about when Burke gave her Switzerland..." Redditor shmoobel noticed that Meredith and Christina's time in Minnesota— in Season 18 and Season 9, respectively—weren't just similar in location but in the hospital setting that the show used. I'd rather be picking up trash off the side of the highway." Could this foreshadow Christina returning to her old stomping grounds sometime in the next season or two?

"I have the right to leave," said Meredith, agitated. "I have earned the right to leave. "I wasn't suggesting we stay here forever," Nick responded. "Okay, fine. I researched. I worked. I stayed. "You won't be okay. I'm going to take that offer." "You know, there was a time where being my student meant something," Webber told resident Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli), while Meredith was beside them. "Meredith Grey, back in neuro, pissing people off," Addison responded. "So how much is David Hamilton offering you?"

Grey's Anatomy Couples That The Show Should've Explored ... (Screen Rant)

Amelia Shepherd & Stephanie Edwards ... Reddit user magicwemade pitched their take on a pair whose friendship and solid working relationship could have blossomed ...

Would it have transformed Tom into the kind, supportive character he was when Tom and Teddy worked as a couple on Grey's Anatomy? Catherine and Richard's relationship was undoubtedly more complicated than hers would have been with Tom, and Catherine's support of Webber as both her husband and head of the hospital's residency program is still a clear conflict of interests. Perhaps it was the characters' age gap, their resident and attending relationship, or the fact that they were each in so many other entanglements — Owen with Christina, Amelia, and Teddy, and April with Jackson, Matthew, then Jackson again. This certainly isn't one of the worst reasons couples have broken up on Grey's Anatomy, which is a change of pace for Grey's typically brutal splits. Though Teddy and Owen's marriage seems to be on the rocks these days, it doesn't seem like April will come back from Boston to whisk him off his feet. The writers definitely should have given him a fair shake through a relationship with someone at the same stage of life as him. This means April and Riggs could still end up together—though fans of Jackson and April's reconciliation might have strong feelings about this. Before his untimely death, Deluca fans shipped him with another high-powered surgeon who wasn't Meredith Grey. Oncer93 came to the conversational thread with several answers prepared for who the resident could have ended up with. Though some of Andrew Deluca's best moments on Grey's happened with Meredith, their relationship crumbled under the stress of their unequal power dynamic. Still, there are plenty of potential couplings that the show's writers didn't dream up, and Reddit viewers had a few suggestions for couples that should have been. Redditor Spritti33 added to the thread to throw out a pairing that had palpable sexual chemistry in nearly every scene they shared together. Carina, of course, had a beautiful but brief relationship with Arizona, which is still one of Grey's fans' favorite same-sex pairings. Thankfully, she wasn't sacrificed to the Grey's gods, and instead, left the medical profession to pursue new adventures in her life.

Grey's Anatomy Recap: Malcontents Under Pressure — Plus ... (TVLine)

Our recap of Grey's Anatomy Season 18, Episode 16, reveals what happens when Kate Walsh's Addison returns again to Grey Sloan.

“How could you be this stupid?” marveled Winston. “How could I be this stupid?” More pressing was the question of what they were going to do about it now. What he had to get into his head and keep there was that the program he was trying to save was old and broken. Did Owen really want to draw the military’s attention to himself when he’s been helping dying veterans end their lives on the DL? He didn’t care, he just wanted to — and did — save the arm. Thinking fast, Owen utilized a technique that the military had been testing when he and Teddy were in Iraq to keep the arm viable. So “what’s the new way to train surgeons?” With the Webber Method, he’d tried to answer that question and failed. Richard took shots at Mer every chance he got, prompting her to marvel during surgery, “When did it become a thing that you owe the hospital you trained in?” Of course it was more than that for Mer and Grey Sloan. As Addison put it, somewhere along the line, Grey had “become some kind of hospital mascot.” As if that wasn’t bad enough, he flatlined in the O.R. Owen performed CPR to save his life, but the patient was too unstable to undergo the 10-hour surgery to reattach his arm. “I’m done being the superhero,” said Miranda. “If Meredith Grey can go away, then so can I.” And to be clear, Bailey wasn’t quitting or even taking a leave, she hastened to add. “Can we just take a moment and honor her?!” Later, after Addison broke the news to Tovah, Levi tried to ease the patient’s pain by reciting the Mourner’s Kaddish with her. Later, Bailey informed Jordan — in front of Catherine — that she was transferring him back to the clinic in Minnesota. If she was unable to save the surgical residency program, he might be “orphaned,” so to speak, and “I want to protect your future.” Besides, she added, “you can still learn from Meredith Grey there!” That evening, Todd and Link helped Jo figure out that she could keep her OB residency and still grant Bailey’s request by “moonlighting” for her. As Addison returned to Grey Sloan to check on Tovah, who was feeling inexplicable pressure in her belly at 11 weeks pregnant with her late husband’s baby, Dr. Montgomery found Meredith being given a hard time right and left about leaving the hospital when it needed her most. She could talk to Laura’s brother, sure, but not about medical stuff, and this felt like a request that she couldn’t deny.

Grey's Anatomy Season 18 Episode 16 Recap "Should I Stay Or ... (Celebrity Myxer)

Recap of Grey's Anatomy Season 18 Episode 16. Bailey faces an unhappy Catherine who is facing audits & Dr. Addison Montgomery returns!

18 18 Teddy is worried that they won’t agree on the approach, but they agree to try therapy. Owen says all they need to do is love Leo, and suggests that they can get a therapist for themselves instead of Leo. He refuses to tell Leo that something is wrong with him. Owen works on the arm, but Teddy warns him that the procedure has only been done in the army, and Owen doesn’t need to grab their attention right now. Miranda hands him transfer papers to send him back to Minnesota. When Dr. Wright asks if he did something wrong, Miranda says it’s the opposite, that he’s the best student, and deserves to be somewhere where he is guaranteed a residency spot and a future. Teddy tells Owen that Leo is just confused, and that they should get him a therapist. Addison encourages Richard to find a new way to teach the residents, to look into the future instead of the past. Addison tells Richard and Meredith to act like adults and get over their tantrums to help the patient. Wendell tells them that he gave them the beta model, and wants to give them the real deal. Owen goes along with it, but Teddy tries to remind Leo that he’s a boy. On Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Episode 16, Miranda deals with the wrath of Catherine Fox as Grey Sloan tumbles down all around her.

'Grey's Anatomy' Season 18 Episode 16: Probation Blues (RECAP) (TV Insider)

Grey Sloan only has days to save its residency program, and that means big shakeups on the employee roster.

But it doesn’t work for Maggie ( Kelly McCreary) and Winston, and Wendell later confesses to his brother that he just found the HeartPatch online and took out a loan to buy the whole supply. And Addison teases her old colleagues about the probation and jokes about Meredith ( Ellen Pompeo) taking a job in Minnesota to continue her neuro research. But Nick contends that he was only suggesting that they stay long enough to save the residency program. It’s called the HeartPatch, and it’s a wireless EKG patch that is supposed to beam cardio info to the physician’s mobile device. They decide to stay in Seattle… but just for a little while. It’s broken,” she tells Richard. “You gotta stop reminiscing about the past and look toward the future.” He tells her she shouldn’t come to Minnesota: He doesn’t want her to resent him if it doesn’t work out. Nico reminds him that Levi asked him to leave when Nico checked in on him. And at the end of the episode, Bailey tells Catherine she’s taking a vacation day or two. Meanwhile, Addison ( Kate Walsh) is back at Grey Sloan in this episode with Tovah (Meryl Hathaway), her uterine transplant patient. “I want nice to be my type,” Jo replies.) And over dinner at Joe’s, Todd suggests that Jo do both career tracks, and Link agrees. “Hopefully you’ll return the favor.”

Grey's Anatomy: Addison Returns To Seattle, But How Long Will She ... (Cinema Blend)

Addison's return to Grey's Anatomy did not go quite how the surgeon hoped, so is her time in Seattle finished?

It would be quite a shame to invite Kate Walsh back on the show after all this time and then have her character leave so close to such a milestone. While this pregnancy failed — as important as it was to the patient — the transplanted uterus was able to be saved, so I think Addison’s got more work to do. Addison may have saved the episode with her quippy one-liners, but after a tragedy in the operating room, how much longer will she stick around Seattle?

Grey's Anatomy recap: So Meredith is staying in Seattle ... (EW.com)

In the latest Grey's Anatomy episode, Meredith seems to question her decision to move as Addison Montgomery returns to Seattle.

He just wants to be here and help her fix the residency program. How is she disloyal to those around her when she's given her heart and soul to Grey Sloan? This is her decision, and she's made it! As Owen processes the idea of Colin losing a limb, he realizes that there is a chance to save the arm. Yup. The man sitting in the bed inhaling and exhaling in real life is a flatline on the monitor. Nick ( Scott Speedman) quickly pivots and claims he didn't mean for his Seattle visit to be a permanent one. Back in the hospital, Winston (Anthony Hill) and Maggie ( Kelly McCreary) have to mask their annoyance when Wendell (Rome Flynn) peddles a new heart monitor to a team of gathered doctors. If Meredith can go away, so can Bailey. Of course, she's not going to quit, but she will take a few days of vacation. As Catherine picks her jaw up off the floor, Bailey corners Jo ( Camilla Luddington) and begs her to come back as a general surgeon attending. All you have to do is slap a patch on your patient's arm, and all sorts of data will whiz straight to your phone. And by golly, Addison Freaking Montgomery will bring all the generations together in the OR to help this woman. It's his only shot at survival if the residency program is pulled, and Bailey doesn't want that on her head. With the residency program on probation, she wonders if she should take her groundbreaking transplanted uterus patient Tova to a more reputable hospital.
