"It was a great team win." After a foreign substance check in which Bellino stared at Bumgarner during a longer-than-typical examination of his left hand, Bumgarner and Bellino exchanged words. Bellino told a pool reporter that Bumgarner was ejected for directing profanity at an umpire.

Diamondbacks lose Bumgarner and lead, but rally for win on Pavin ... (AZCentral.com)

Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Madison Bumgarner was ejected against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday after the first inning, but the D-Backs won 8-7.

"Didn't have my best stuff but I was just trying to get outs as many outs as I could, you know, with, given the circumstances of what happened in the first inning," Martin said. Bumgarner had given up a leadoff home to the Marlins' Jon Berti and looked unhappy about a couple of close pitches that were not called strikes. Martin and Kyle Nelson combined for 5 ⅔ innings of strong relief, then Lovullo turned it over to his main relievers. Ian Kennedy came on to close out the Marlins in the ninth for the save. But Martin settled down, and the Diamondbacks' offense heated up. It was the second ejection of Bumgarner's career. A rare series sweep in Miami just didn't seem to be in the cards for the Diamondbacks on Wednesday afternoon. Absolutely 100 percent gassed, 20 games in a row," Lovullo said, mentioning how thin the team is in the bullpen. That's our recipe, and I want that to continue," Lovullo said. You don't see that very often," Lovullo said. "This team is a group that fights together, believes in one another and is is engaged every single day. Because they lost that lead in the late innings.

MIAMI -- One of the D-backs' most steady starters, three-time World Series champion Madison Bumgarner was ejected after the first inning of the 8-7 series ...

That didn’t happen on Wednesday, but it didn’t seem to matter. “I don't want to get into it, but the umpires were explaining to me the reason why they [ejected Bumgarner],” Lovullo said. … What led up to that was a little bit probably of Bum being uncomfortable in a certain situation; he said a little bit too much and got ejected. … You guys have all seen it, and you can go back and see it all again, and it’s pretty clear.” But I think he just felt like there was something that didn't make him very happy during that sequence.” The content of the exchange was unclear.

Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner had to be restrained by teammates after he was ejected after one inning of work.

He was targeted, Bellino needs to be disciplined. Many seemed to believe Bellino instigated the pitcher, including Diamondbacks executive and former Major Leaguer Dan Haren. It did appear to be slightly off the plate, but the 32-year-old disagreed.

The veteran pitcher did not take kindly to umpire Dan Bellino's check for foreign substances, and said something that led to an ejection.

There’s been no word yet of further disciplinary action levied against Bumgarner, or any public comments on the incident. Unsurprisingly, Bumgarner didn’t take kindly to Bellino’s decision, and he had to be physically held back by his teammates and coaches. In one of the oddest and most viral moments of the young season, the Diamondbacks pitcher was tossed in the first inning by first base umpire Dan Bellino after getting checked for foreign substances.

Obviously you didn't go into the game with the intention of throwing one inning, so for them to be able to fight and everyone picked me up today, for that to happen that's pretty incredible. Both Bumgarner and the Diamondbacks have been rolling, surprisingly, of late. He then recorded three outs, but wouldn't make it into the dugout before being ejected from the game.

First base umpire Dan Bellino did his job, checking Diamondbacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner's hand just in case there were any foreign substances.

I think he was reacting to Bumgarner's reaction," Johnson said. "Well, there really wasn't a conversation there, as the (MLB commissioner's) report will note," Bellino said of when he was checking Bumgarner's hands. I don't know if I could say anything that would make the situation better," Bumgarner said. And he was ejected from the game after one inning of work. The Diamondbacks, without one of their best starting pitchers, went on to win a wild game at loanDepot Park, 8-7, and leave Florida with a three-game series sweep. Only Bellino and Bumgarner know what was said between them, but the hand check was thorough, one could say.

Madison Bumgarner's Ejection Was Actually About an Umpire's ... (Sports Illustrated)

Arizona's ace could've avoided being ejected Wednesday by simply letting umpire Dan Bellino down softly. Instead, he broke his heart.

That’s too much for Bellino to bear. He’s lying to Bumgarner and himself. Bellino is crushed. When the umpire finally lets go, Bumgarner says something about how long it took for Bellino to see his hand and begins to walk away, and Bellino promptly ejects him. And yes, Bellino should have to answer for being an insecure whiner-baby, especially because he wasn’t even the one who made the ball call that Bumgarner disagreed with; in fact, Bellino wasn’t involved at all. He’s been waiting for this intimate moment with the rugged, bearded Bumgarner, who for years also moonlighted as a rodeo star, for longer than he can remember. The umpire wants this moment to be special. He could have touched Bumgarner’s hands to make sure the pitcher wasn’t cheating and then let him go back to the dugout. One of them is from BetSided managing editor Ben Heisler, who used to cover fantasy and gambling at Sports Illustrated. It captures Bellino feeling MadBum’s hand for the better part of 30 seconds and staring at him. But there was more to the ejection than that. Madison Bumgarner, who started the game for the D-backs, was ejected after the first inning by first base umpire Dan Bellino during what should have been a routine sticky stuff inspection.

Robo umps can't get here soon enough as unhinged humans ... (Deadspin)

Bumgarner ejected for losing staring contest, Scherzer ran on his day off.

Hitters also are timed under the new rule, and I guess the home plate umpire wasn’t satisfied with the readiness of Midland RockHounds infielder Jordan Diaz. He called strike 3 on a 2-2 count despite Diaz having two feet in the box and settling in for a pitch he never saw. In the minors, the new pitch clock is working, it’s cutting down the length of the games. Bumgarner’s ejection was the most egregious of the week and, yes, I’m factoring in Max Scherzer getting tossed for arguing balls and strikes from the dugout. There’s no overseer of rules as thirsty for the limelight as an MLB umpire. It certainly seems like the ejection was preordained, and whatever reaction/reason for disqualification that the first-base umpire was looking for, he got it. No, Triple A isn’t testing out a robo-ump at the moment, but maybe they should be because what happened to Madison Bumgarner on Wednesday was the epitome of entitled behavior.
