Cinco De Mayo: How did the holiday become more popular in the ... (USA TODAY)

Cinco De Mayo commemorates a pivotal moment in Mexico's history. Yet, it has become more of an American holiday than a Mexican one.

"We need to understand what Cinco de Mayo means to our community, and convey that to younger generations, because it is about strength and solidarity." They love Mexican food, they love like the Mexican culture, they love the drinks, the food, the music, everything about it and they just like want a day to be able to have fun with it," Lopez said. "There is this very subversive element to Cinco de Mayo, and that is one of anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism, self-determination and autonomy of Mexican peoples. He views it as a "two-way sword," in that commercialization does take away from Cinco De Mayo, but there's a push to educate people on the holiday's meaning. Meanwhile, there are Cinco De Mayo celebrations throughout Mexico, notably in the city of Puebla, where the battle took place. With family from Tijuana and Enscenada, she added people celebrate because it's a day to celebrate Mexican traditions. That does overshadow, in a way, the people's memory of what Cinco De Mayo represents. However, the people's memory of Cinco de Mayo does survive," Irene Vásquez, department chair of Chicano and Chicana Studies at the University of New Mexico, told USA TODAY. "It becomes a Chicano holiday, in many ways, linked to the Chicano movement, because we discover Mexicans resisting a foreign invader," García said. What started as marketing from beer companies is now a day to get deals on all Mexican products. But many Hispanics and Chicanx people see problems in celebrations. "I just feel like it's Americans that don't want to admit they love Mexican stuff.

The Evolution of Cinco de Mayo: From Regional Holiday to Brewery ... (Wine Enthusiast Magazine)

There are a lot of misconceptions around Cinco de Mayo, from its origins to how it came to be celebrated in the U.S. Here's the real history.

United States for Cinco de Mayo, more than for Super Bowl Sunday or St. Patrick’s Day. The following year, CNN cited Cinco de Mayo as the biggest non-winter drinking day of the year. Anheuser-Busch and Miller both created their own Hispanic marketing departments and began sponsoring Cinco de Mayo events, starting with a three-day festival in Los Angeles in 1989. Enter Cinco de Mayo, which they thought could be positioned as a sort of “ Mexican St. Patrick’s Day,” and, thus, add another day of heavy drinking onto the yearly events calendar. Within four days of victory, Juárez proclaimed that the Battle of Puebla of May 5, or Cinco de Mayo, would be a national holiday forevermore. By the mid-20th century, Mexican immigration was greatly increasing and the Chicano Movement’s push for Mexican American civil rights was picking up steam. The story begins in 1861, when Benito Juárez was elected the 26th president of Mexico after a bitter civil war.

The History of Cinco de Mayo and How It's Celebrated (The New York Times)

There is more to this celebration of Mexican heritage than beer, mariachi bands and wild parties.

Cinco de Mayo continued to be celebrated in the United States, largely thanks to the efforts of those of Mexican descent. He suggested pairing the dish with chalupas, small fried tortillas enjoyed with a variety of fillings; white rice; nopales salad; fried beans; and molotes de plátano, stuffed plantain patties. No. Cinco de Mayo is often mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day in the United States, but Mexican independence is actually celebrated on Sept. 16. Many activists started pointing to Cinco de Mayo as a source of pride, Dr. Lavariega Monforti said. Pedro Reyes, a Mexican food writer and creative director at Paladar, a Mexican company devoted to the development of culinary projects, said that mole poblano, the chocolate-rich version of mole that originated in Puebla, might be a good pick for a Cinco de Mayo-inspired feast. “But where’s the need to mess with my guacamole?” Jessica Lavariega Monforti, the vice provost at California State University, Channel Islands, said that Cinco de Mayo had been celebrated in California every year since its inception in 1863. Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s unexpected victory over France in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Cinco de Mayo literally means “May 5” in Spanish, which is when this celebration of Mexican heritage falls each year. Over time, however, that message of cultural pride seemed to get lost. The victory in Puebla galvanized the Mexican forces but turned out to be short-lived, and France later occupied the country, installing Maximilian I as emperor. U.S. presidents traditionally mark the occasion, too.

There's more to Cinco de Mayo than you might think (The Washington Post)

Ruben A. Arellano is an Indigenous Chicano scholar and professor of history at Dallas College — Mountain View Campus. Today at 6:00 a.m. EDT.

What remained was an Anglicized, corporate shell of an event that was once a vehicle through which the Mexican American community could celebrate the triumphs of both its cultural homeland and its newly adopted one. The Mexican American community of Philadelphia provides yet another example of the holiday’s continued evolution in the United States. The radical politics of the 1960s and ’70s gave way to a more moderate and accommodationist politics — the “Hispanic” age had arrived. After many years of being boycotted, the Coors Brewing Co. wanted “to improve its image among Chicano activists” and became “the largest supporter of the Cinco de Mayo as a holiday event,” according to a history by Antonio Sanchez of Central Washington University. Just like the poor and ill-equipped makeshift Mexican army that defeated a global superpower against all odds, Chicanos also viewed themselves as “underdogs” in the fight for equality and justice. Mexico had abolished slavery after its 1821 independence, so the Mexican residents of California tended to reject the idea of living in a slave society. Celebrations would continue throughout the remainder of the French occupation and beyond. In the meantime, in late 1861, under Napoleon III, France invaded Mexico with the pretense of collecting a debt. The CSA had its eyes set on the West and even Mexico, sparking fear for people living in free-soil Western territories. It occupied territory stretching from its current southern boundaries up to the modern U.S. states of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming. Even though Texas fought its own war of independence, it gets included in the discussion as well. One way those who stayed coped with the changes was to form organizations, such as the “juntas patrioticas Mejicanas” (Mexican patriotic assemblies), throughout the American Southwest. As the Mexican American scholar David Hayes-Bautista has shown, California boasted at least 129 juntas patrioticas Mejicanas by the 1860s. Cinco de Mayo may be best known as an overly commercial holiday, stripped of meaning and reliant on stereotypes about Mexico, at least for the majority of Americans toasting with margaritas.
