Penguins vs. Rangers Game 1 Odds, Pick: Sidney Crosby slated to ... (New York Post)

With the two-way abilities of Sidney Crosby, the Penguins have a potent enough roster to pull off an upset.

The Penguins do project to have the edge at 5-on-5, which should mean that Shesterkin will be the busier of the two netminders over the course of this series. Crosby is coming off another fantastic season and is one of the game’s best two-way centers at this point in his career. Sidney Crosby’s play will go a long way in deciding if Pittsburgh does end up with the better of play at 5-on-5. Shesterkin finished the season with a .935 save percentage and a +34.1 Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx). No goaltender came close to matching Shesterkin’s form throughout the season and it’s hard to imagine that Casey DeSmith will be able to outduel Shesterkin over seven games. That argument, that the Rangers should be a more considerable favorite, does have merit on the surface. Most folks, especially those who don’t bet the NHL regularly, would have expected the Rangers to be a shorter favorite for the series, likely in the -135 range.

The Penguins coaches watched the replay on a monitor at the bench and decided to challenge for goalie interference. With 3:10 left in the third period, the Rangers appeared to take a 4-3 lead on a goal by center Filip Chytil. He tucked the puck into an abandoned net, as DeSmith was taken out of his crease on a collision that included both Rangers forward Kaapo Kakko and Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin, who trailed behind him. You're playing in overtime in the playoffs, are you kidding me?" The officials watched the replay and conferred. The explanation from the NHL Situation Room said: "Video review determined New York's Kaapo Kakko impaired Casey DeSmith's ability to play his position in the crease prior to Filip Chytil's goal. The Rangers received only one power-play in the game. Between the first and second overtimes, Domingue ate a bowl of spicy pork and broccoli, which was intended for a postgame meal for the team. The Rangers dominated early, taking a 1-0 lead on defenseman Adam Fox's power-play goal at 9:19 of the first period. Sidney Crosby set up Jake Guentzel twice for goals to tie the game. To say he didn't expect to enter the game would be an understatement. Despite being ice cold, Domingue made 14 saves in the second overtime and then three more in the third before Malkin won it. He was closing in on Columbus goalie Joonas Korpisalo's 2020 record of 85 saves against the Tampa Bay Lightning when Malkin tipped home a point shot from Penguins defenseman John Marino.

Malkin! Penguins Beat Rangers in 3 OT, Take 1-0 Series Lead (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

The Pittsburgh Penguins got a miserable start to Game 1 of the playoffs, but came away with a 4-3 victory in triple overtime.

Letang got the second assist. Guentzel nearly ended the game — and completed a hat trick — at 17:19 of overtime, when he put a shot off the crossbar behind Shesterkin. They needed 41 of those before Rust, at the left side of the crease, rapped in a feed from Evgeni Malkin to tie it, 3-3. They found the perfect salve for all the bumps and bruises they picked up over the course of the evening, however, rallying from a pair of deficits for a 4-3 triple-overtime victory. New York not only was faster than the Penguins during the early stages of play, but was far more aggressive. NEW YORK — The Pittsburgh Penguins absorbed a lot of punishment from the New York Rangers during Game 1 of their opening-round playoff series Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Game 1 Recap: The legend of LOUIS! Pens win epic triple OT Game ... (PensBurgh)

The Penguins win in triple OT with an Evgeni Malkin goal after falling in a 2-0 hole early. Casey DeSmith leaves the game in 2OT but Louis Domingue comes up ...

- A lot of poise and character shown by the Pens in the second to bounceback. - In fact, the whole top line of the Pens is turning into a huge issue for the Rangers. They tried multiple lines and defense pairs to check them. they were doing the Islanders thing to throw a bunch of board-rattling checks and had the Pens on their heels and the energy going up. New York carried most of the first overtime, with Fox especially being noticeable activating from his defensive position and generating a lot of scoring chances from close to the net. Kakko was being defended by Dumoulin, but clearly did drive into the blue paint of his own volition and it did hinder the goalie’s ability to play the position. A pair of long passes by Bryan Rust and Sidney Crosby had NYR chasing the play and made it easy for Jake Guentzel to tap into the net from right in front and get Pittsburgh on the board. Kakko keeps with the play and is able to pass it out for Filip Chytil to tap the puck into the vacated net. With so much speed, it was easy for Kreider to deke backhand and tuck it in past the left-out-to-dry DeSmith as the Rangers re-took the lead at 3-2. Bryan Rust made a great long pass up for Crosby, who froze the defender in the zone as Guentzel snuck behind Lindgren. Crosby’s pass set Guentzel in alone and the Pens sniper finished the deal. For a jumping off point of the playoffs, it only took one game for a roller coaster of highs and lows. Adam Fox worked out to the right and then floated a shot in to the left past Casey DeSmith. Early in the second, DeSmith didn’t help his cause when he caught and held a puck in his glove but dropped it back into play.

Of all players in the game, no one had more shots on goal at 5-on-5 than Kapanen’s eight. Kapanen also tied for the Penguins’ lead in hits with four. During the second and third periods, the Penguins had a significant advantage in the play. He was rewarded with an assist and “plus” on the winner scored by Evgeni Malkin 5 minutes and 58 seconds into triple overtime. DeSmith, by comparison, encountered only two rebound shots against during the time he was in the game. But go a little deeper, and it gets even more impressive: In 25 minutes and 24 seconds of even-strength ice time together, the Penguins’ top line accounted for 43 attempted shots and allowed only 17 by the Rangers. Kasperi Kapanen was supposed to be one of the Penguins’ most productive players this season. But it was a largely successful outing for the 30-year-old longtime Penguins backup. Domingue was peppered – the Rangers made him stop 17 shots in just over 16 ½ minutes. They had their most eye-popping advantages in the areas of scoring chances. But that doesn’t even scratch the surface in illustrating how dominant the trio was. Yes, they outscored the Rangers 2-0 and outshot them 24-9.

“I just try to look at it one year at a time,” he said. “He has the best of both worlds.” “He’s very good at rest, so when he’s not training, his nervous system is in a really calm state.” For the sake of superstition, it has always made for a salary cap hit of $8.7 million per season. “And then feel ready to go the next day. Crosby still barges into the corners, battles alongside the boards and scores nifty goals — on breakaways and tic-tac-toes, from the back door and behind the net, on one knee and on his behind and off a goalie’s head. Crosby, chosen by the Penguins first overall in 2005 and heaped with expectations to lead the N.H.L. out of its lockout season, played his 1,000th career game in February 2021 and scored his 500th goal one year later. “It’s more years of wear and tear, and on top of that, you’ve got to find ways to adjust your game. Crosby, who has won three Stanley Cups and a boatload of individual awards in a physically brutal game that becomes faster and younger by the year, has been paying attention. His 84 points tied him for the team lead with left wing Jake Guentzel, who is seven years younger than Crosby and played seven more games. “I don’t look at it as he’s peaked and now we’re just trying to slow down that decline,” O’Brien said. Only seven current N.H.L. players have been at it longer than Crosby, and six others came into the league with him in 2005.

Penguins Sink Rangers 4-3 in Triple Overtime to Take Game 1 (The New York Times)

The first N.H.L. playoff game at Madison Square Garden in five years featured just about everything a hockey game could, except for a win by the home team.

Neither team scored in the third period or in the first two overtimes, and there were no penalties either. Their jerseys and skates soaked with sweat, the players appeared to be weighed down. But just as the Rangers appeared to get comfortable, the Penguins found their footing. In the second period, the Rangers picked up where they left off. Kreider faked to DeSmith and buried scored on a backhand for a short-handed goal. Shesterkin was the eighth goalie in N.H.L. history and first Ranger to make more than 70 saves in a game. The Rangers were that team on Tuesday when they lost a triple overtime slugfest to the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-3, in a game that set numerous playoff records. “It was a 4-3 game, but they got the one goal that mattered.” The Rangers and Penguins combined for 151 shots on goal. Shesterkin had a fabulous season but had played in just one postseason game. In retrospect, there were many near misses that could have sent the fans home a lot earlier than 11:48 p.m., when Malkin scored the game-winner. “It’s a playoff game against one of our rivals,” said Penguins right wing Bryan Rust, who had a goal and two assists.

Penguins comeback twice before defeating Rangers in 3OT(!) to win Game 1. We're all a little groggy so here's Pens Points to wake you up.

Casey DeSmith will not be the first unproven goalie to take the ice for the Penguins in the playoffs, in fact, Penguins lore is filed with these kind of stories. For as long as the Penguins are alive in the playoffs, much will be made about this possibly being the last playoff run for Crosby, Malkin, and Letang as teammates. What started out ugly ended beautifully for the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 last night against the New York Rangers. Ron Cook: Penguins' thrilling Game 1 win vs. Rangers had everything (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

The Penguins dressed 12 forwards, six defensemen and two goaltenders Tuesday night for Game 1 of their first-round playoff series against the New York ...

How about Guentzel’s two goals, the first on a chip-in, the second on a beauty of wrist shot? The second was especially terrific, a backhanded pass to Guentzel, who was screaming down the slot. The Rangers had every right to think they won the game at 16:50 of the third period on a goal by Filip Chytil. But a replay review after Mike Sullivan challenged for goaltender interference took the goal away. That hit by Lindgren was one of just 43 by the Rangers, who had a surreal 19 in the first period alone. You knew you were going to get it from the amazing Shesterkin, who led the NHL in goals-against average (2.07) and save percentage (.935) during the regular season. Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust came to life, Crosby after a long playoff slump and Rust after a dreadful finish to the regular season. He stopped 79 of the Penguins’ playoff-record 83 shots. He had to sleep well Tuesday night after also picking up secondary assists on Guentzel’s goals. Domingue’s performance, along with Evgeni Malkin’s deflection of a John Marino shot for the winning goal at 5:58 of the third overtime, made for the most unlikely of finishes and got the Penguins off to a fast start with a road win against a team that had beaten them three times in four games during the regular season. A team that won Game 1 has gone on to win 68.6% of series, according to the NHL. Ryan Reaves had more hard hits — eight in all — than Devin Bush had all of last football season. Domingue might have been a surreal star, but the Penguins had plenty of others.

Penguins flipped their recent playoff script in Game 1 win (PensBurgh)

The Pittsburgh Penguins had the right process and got the result in their Game 1 win.

The expected goals in this game were 7-3 in favor of the Penguins, they controlled the puck in the offensive zone and played their game. The top line of Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel, and Bryan Rust was about as dominant as a line can be. It is the type of winning hockey they played when they were winning Stanley Cups. It is also the exact opposite type of hockey we have seen from this team over the past couple of weeks when they were backing into the playoffs losing most of their games. The Penguins have lost in the First Round three years in a row and have not won a playoff series since defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in the First Round of the 2018 playoffs. After a slow start in the opening 20 minutes the Penguins completely turned the game around in their favor and were overwhelmingly carrying the play. When it happens in the middle of the regular season or early in the season you still have 40-70 games to allow it to correct itself.

How Much Longer Can the Pittsburgh Penguins Keep Doing This? (Slate Magazine)

Playing the New York Rangers on the first night of their 16th consecutive Stanley Cup Playoff run, the Penguins should've gotten sandblasted. They had lost ...

The 2022 playoffs are probably a last hurrah for that iteration of the Penguins. That makes these next games worth appreciating if you’re a fan—and worth tolerating if you’re not, given that your time to shine is coming soon. The horror story the Penguins will try to avoid is that of the Red Wings, whom they lost to in 2008 and beat in 2009 to win this trio’s first Cup. The Red Wings had two premier forwards, Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, and one of the two best defensemen ever, Nicklas Lidstrom. They got old. The only reason to know the end is coming is that it always does. Datsyuk eventually went home to play in Russia. The Red Wings didn’t have a stable of young talent waiting, and they’d spent a lot of salary cap space on their aging stars. The Penguins have had a long list of coaches and general managers during the Crosby, Letang, and Malkin run. But they enjoyed quite a bit of organizational stability at the top, and that has crashed down rapidly in the past year. For years, the Penguins have been near or directly at the bottom of analysts’ rankings of NHL farm systems. They were horrendous in the mid-1980s, and they either tanked well enough or got lucky enough to draft Mario Lemieux, a Quebecois center who became one of the five best players ever and then decided to bail the team out of dire financial straits by becoming a player-owner. Whether the Penguins as we know them come apart in a few weeks or another two or three years almost feels immaterial. Malkin and Letang are both on expiring contracts, and every indication is that the Penguins have a lot of work to do to keep even one of them, let alone both, beyond this spring. But his partnership with Malkin and Letang is on borrowed time and cannot persist much longer, even if the Penguins surprise everyone by conjuring up a way to keep all three next year. In their career span together, the Penguins have won five more regular-season games than anyone else in the NHL and nine more playoff games.
