Celtics vs. Bucks score: Live NBA playoff updates as Boston tries to ... (CBSSports.com)

The Milwaukee Bucks went into Boston on Sunday and handed the Celtics a stunning 101-89 defeat in Game 1 of their second-round series.

Now it's up to the Bucks to figure out how they can get their shots off against Boston just as Boston adjusted to them in Game 2. But Boston changed up its game plan defensively in a way that took away the 3s Milwaukee lives off of on offense. Yet in Game 2, the Celtics took 43 3s and the Bucks took just 18. Grant Williams (6), Jaylen Brown (6) and Jayson Tatum (5) all made more 3s in the game than the Bucks did as a team (3). Boston outscored Milwaukee by 51 points from deep, but what's more, that hot shooting helped the Celtics find easier points in the first half. Those 18 3-point attempts are by far the fewest of the Mike Budenholzer era in Milwaukee. Under his coaching, the Bucks had never taken fewer than 22 in a game before Game 2. Milwaukee ranked fifth in the NBA by taking 38.4 3s per game in the regular season. The Bucks went into Boston on Sunday and handed the Celtics a stunning 101-89 defeat in their series opener. If it plays the low-energy offense it did in the second? Milwaukee's defense -- already geared around protecting the paint and sacrificing 3s -- took things to another level in the opener by starting Bobby Portis alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Brook Lopez. The idea was to put so much size on the floor that the Celtics would be baited into shooting nothing but jumpers. Boston rebounded with a win at TD Garden, and they did so without the services of Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart, who sat out with a right thigh contusion. Boston was hot from the start, outscoring Milwaukee 65-40 in the first half. Bucks score, takeaways: Boston bounces back vs.

Antetokounmpo, after two straight poor shooting performances, will likely play better when the series shifts to Milwaukee. And the Bucks defense, gashed in the first half, held Boston to 18 points in the third quarter and just 44 points in the second half. He made eight of his 11 shots in the third. Antetokounmpo, who collected a triple-double in Game 1, was held to 2-of-12 shooting in the first half. Giannis Antetokounmpo was the only Bucks player to score more than 20 points—and he needed 27 shots to get his 28. He made 10 of his 20 shots, five of his 10 threes and handed out eight assists. “We felt like we let them off the hook,” Udoka said. I knew we would come out with the right effort to tonight.” It was 65–40 at the half. It was 18–3 midway through the first quarter. The scorer but not the scorer. He made 11 of his 18 shots, six of his 10 threes and held Celtics-killer Jrue Holiday to 19 points on 7-of-20 in Boston’s 109–86 win. BOSTON — He is the other J. This was evident in the first half Tuesday when Giannis missed 9 of his first 10 shots and finished with just five points in the half. Ainge also drafted both of the Williamses, and Smart, and essentially laid the foundation for this crew If the Celtics win the title, somebody should sneak a ring, or at least show some respect, to the architect. In the first round, they put the cuffs on Kevin Durant and the Nets. This round, the challenge is a two-time MVP, and Giannis didn’t hurt them Tuesday. They’re on an epic postseason run from a defensive standpoint, but you knew this. On more than a dozen possessions, the ball touched multiple hands and the Celtics were extremely patient while finding the right shooter at the right spot, even if the process came tantalizingly close to a shot-clock violation. Middleton could make all the difference between the Bucks defending their championship and never getting the chance. Middleton has yet to resume practice; he was originally projected to miss two weeks which, if that stays true, would put him back on the floor in a few days. And so: In addition to the defense he supplied, Williams added 21 points, making 6 of 9 from deep in what was his finest postseason performance. Williams dug his sneakers in and simply didn’t move once Giannis tried to back him down in the first half, when Giannis missed 9 of his first 10 shots. Also, the Bucks only took 18 attempts from beyond the arc (the lowest of the Mike Budenholzer coaching era) to Boston’s 43. Hard-working and clever, he has developed into a reliable 3-point shooter, where he’ll mostly try from the corners. He provided a layer against Giannis, as did Al Horford, with sneaky good defense by using smarts to steer clear of foul trouble.

Jaylen Brown bounced back big in Game 2: 7 takeaways from ... (Boston.com)

Jaylen Brown and the Celtics bounced back in a big way in Game 2, beating the Bucks 109-86 to even the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The fact that Antetokounmpo still finished with 28 points is a testament to the former MVP, but the Celtics can be encouraged by how difficult they made things for perhaps the best player in the world. 7. The Celtics looked like a team that weathered its first real storm in Game 1 and came out the other side intact. Antetokounmpo is as crucial to his team offensively as Kevin Durant was to the Nets, but Antetokounmpo’s game looks more exhausting — if Durant needs a bucket, he can always pull up from 3-point range. You want to continue to channel that adversity, channel the things you’ve had to overcome all year into that game, because it’s just one.” Much of the discrepancy is by design — the Bucks give up 3-pointers, and the Celtics clearly opted to prioritize 3-point defense while letting Grant Williams and Al Horford guard Giannis Antetokounmpo 1-on-1 — but the Celtics could feel a lot more comfortable if they weren’t so reliant on their jump shots falling. 4. Antetokounmpo scored just two points in the first quarter, but he exploded for 18 in the third. 3. Grant Williams has a lot of room to grow as a player and it’s unclear exactly what direction his game will take next. “Sometimes passing up open shots to get a great shot is what we kind of like to do,” Brown said. But many of the worst issues that presented themselves in Game 1 were resolved. They moved the ball more consistently and created great looks instead of decent ones. That was our first loss in the playoffs so far, so getting accustomed to losing is something that we don’t want to do, but in a good way, how you respond is everything. “That was our first true test in the playoffs, how you respond,” Brown said.

The Celtics turn the tables on the Bucks in a 109-86 win to even their ... (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)

The Celtics went 20-for-43 from three-point range and 38-for-80 overall while also creating problems for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday.

After scoring 12 points in Game 1, he scored 17 in the first quarter on 6 of 7 shooting as the Celtics took a 32-21 lead after one. And while the Celtics went nearly five minutes without a field goal in that Bucks run, that wasn’t going to continue throughout. The Celtics took a heavy blow from the Bucks in Game 1 and repaid that favor as soon as the game tipped off, jumping out to a 18-3 lead in opening six minutes of the game. The Bucks also only made two of their 8 three-pointers and allowed 15 Celtics points off nine turnovers. “He made some high degree of difficulty shots, got ’em out of the gate. But there were a couple plays in late third quarter and in the fourth quarter, it felt like maybe we could’ve got it inside of 10 and just find a way but we didn’t. So, we’ll look at the film and see how we can be better going into Game 3.” The Bucks were just 1-for-4 from behind the three-point line in the third, so while they trimmed a 26-point deficit to 16 in the heart of the quarter they couldn’t quickly make up the deficit. The Celtics were led by Jaylen Brown and his 30 points while Jayson Tatum added 29. So while the Bucks halved a 26-point third-quarter deficit with 3:13 to go, they were forced into having to take difficult two-point baskets, and frankly ran out of time to complete such a comeback. They did just that in a 109-86 victory over the Bucks on Tuesday night, evening their NBA Eastern Conference semifinal series at 1-1. After missing 32 of their franchise-record 50 three-point attempts, the Celtics went 20-for-43 from behind the arc. “I think they came out with intensity as we expected – but they did it at a high level,” Bucks guard Pat Connaughton said.

Celtics ride big first half to 109-86 victory over Bucks, even series 1-1 (CelticsBlog)

The Celtics rebounded from a Game 1 loss, suffocating Giannis Antetokounmpo. Jaylen Brown scored 30 and Grant Williams stepped up on both ends of the floor.

With six minutes to go, Brown had just one made field goal in the second half after scoring 25 in the first half. The Celtics offense was executing to a tee as the second quarter wore on, and the defense was in peak form. Antetokounmpo as a screener was working wonders for Milwaukee, as they pounded inside to chip away at the lead. Tatum struggled through the first three quarters, but was active on defense and kept the ball moving. After another and-one opportunity for Antetokounmpo, Tatum responded with an and-one chance of his own, resetting the lead to 19. The occasional over-passing and lethargy on offense allowed Milwaukee to creep slowly back into the game. In the first seven minutes of the third quarter, Boston scored just seven points. A Brown three, his fifth straight, stretched the lead to 65-40, which Boston carried into halftime. Three-point shooting was the key to the Celtics’ early lead, as Boston started 5-for-6 from deep. The tandem of Grant Williams and Al Horford was giving Antetokounmpo fits. Boston came out of the gates blazing hot, especially Jaylen Brown. Brown had seven of the Celtics’ first nine, attacking early. Al Horford had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to go along with a game-high four steals.

Celtics present complex defensive puzzle for Giannis, Bucks (FOXSports.com)

The Bucks have a difficult code to crack, as Boston's defense has already made its adjustments, Yaron Weitzman writes.

But right now, it looks like the Celtics have figured out how to both slow Giannis and prevent the Bucks from jacking 3s. For example, they registered just six fast break points in Game 2, after racking up 28 in Game 1, a trend they can likely reverse if they can force some more Celtics misses, especially from deep. Jrue Holiday is a fantastic all-around player, but he doesn’t have Middleton’s ability to generate shots or draw out a defense. What might be most impressive, though, is that the Celtics seemed to expect this sort of performance. The bad news is that, thanks to an MCL strain that will keep Middleton out for the entire second round, it’s not one the Bucks can lean on in their current matchup against the Boston Celtics. BOSTON — There were many reasons the Milwaukee Bucks were able to finally break through last season.

Back to Celtics basketball: 10 Takeaways from Boston Celtics ... (CelticsBlog)

That quote was from Jaylen Brown postgame after the Boston Celtics beat the Milwaukee Bucks to even their second round series at 1-1. Brown was spot on.

9. The Bucks made a couple of mini-runs in the fourth quarter, but Boston kept making plays to keep that at bay. He attacks, forces help and finds Jayson Tatum for the layup: The Bucks tried to counter Boston defending Antetokounmpo 1-on-1 by using him as a screener. Al Horford and Grant Williams again combined as the primary defenders on Antetokounmpo and they again held up very well. Because of Horford and Williams’ ability to contain Antetokounmpo without help, Ime Udoka abandoned the double-team strategy. We’ll hit on this more later, but Boston did a good job in the first half of pushing the ball. Brown scored 25 points in the first half, and he did it in a variety of ways. On this one, Boston used most of the shot-clock. On the next trip, Tatum was called for a somewhat dubious offensive foul. On three straight possessions late in the third quarter, Tatum seemed to remember he’s bigger and better than Wesley Matthews. This is a shot the Celtics can get with regularity against the Bucks base defense. In Game 2, the 2022 Celtics showed up.

Grant Williams (right) drew an offensive foul the hard way against Giannis Antetokounmpo. By Chad Finn, The Boston Globe. May 4, 2022 | 11:17 AM.

The Celtics, of course, were playing without the current Defensive Player of the Year, Marcus Smart, who was out with a quadriceps contusion. But Williams, just as he did against the Nets’ Kevin Durant in the first round, continued making Antetokounmpo earn every inch of space on the parquet, even as Giannis treated him like his own personal crash-test dummy. It was hardly a surprise when he awakened in the second half, scoring 23 points, including the Bucks’ first 8 of the third quarter as they scrambled to make a game of it — he’s such a special player that you have to assume the onslaught of points is coming at some point. Pretty much the only surefire way to stop Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo would be to construct a Green Monster-sized wall in front of the basket. He was right in the middle of the Celtics’ offensive onslaught to start the game, hitting a 3 to put them up 15-3 with 6½ minutes left in the first quarter, then drilled another two minutes later to build the lead to 23-8. Jayson Tatum finished with 29 points, with many of his buckets, including a shot-clock-beating 3-pointer with a little more than four minutes left, coming down the stretch.

3 overreactions to Celtics' Game 2 shellacking of Bucks (ClutchPoints)

Here are three overreactions to the Celtics' blowout win over the Bucks in Game 2 of their NBA Playoff series.

Boston certainly looked the part of a team that was seizing momentum, especially considering their margin of victory without Smart. However, the Bucks, who have battled and shown fight without Khris Middleton, aren’t just going to be pushovers. Yes, Boston was playing with a big lead and could take their foot off of the gas pedal. It’s clear that Boston has figured something out — and Williams is a huge part of it. The results were promising on Tuesday night, as Antetokounmpo struggled from the field once again, shooting 11-of-27 after going 9-for-25 in Game 1. Boston rained 3s down on the Bucks while holding them to just 86 points, a playoff low for Milwaukee. What’s impressive is that such a stout defensive effort occurred with Marcus Smart, who missed Game 2 with a thigh injury, on the bench. Such a beatdown is bound to be accompanied by plenty of things learned about both teams.
