The former LSU legend reportedly signed a three-year, $33 million deal with the New Orleans Saints. There's still some language in the contract that needs to be ...
Mathieu signing with the hometown Saints is about as big of a slam dunk move New Orleans could possibly make. More importantly he’s been a team captain everywhere he’s been: Arizona, Houston, Kansas City, and he’ll surely be one with the Saints. In nine seasons he’s been an All-Pro three times, made three Pro Bowls, won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs and made the NFL’s 2010 All-Decade team.
That means the Kansas City Chiefs could've afforded to re-sign Tyrann Mathieu but decided to go in a different direction.
“The one thing that’s clear is his genuine love and passion for this city, for this locker room and just being here. Going by his accolades and numbers, such a suggestion may seem implausible. “A guy like that who is a bigger guy that can actually line up and play over a slot, play over a tight end, and can also play deep,” Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi said, “that was something that was appealing to us and our defense.” He also battled knee soreness last season. I think the one thing that just jumps off the screen when you listen to him talk is he loves playing and living in Kansas City.” In an exclusive interview with The Kansas City Star a couple of months later, Mathieu said he was “heartbroken” the Chiefs did not re-sign him and that he would’ve accepted a deal similar to Reid’s, which, of course, he did with New Orleans.
Mathieu and New Orleans reportedly agreed upon a three-year deal that will pay him $33 million, $18 million of which is guaranteed.
Schefter reported on Sunday that the Saints were prepared to pursue him aggressively after failing to draft a safety this weekend, and it seems those efforts have been successful. He previously played for the Arizona Cardinals, who drafted him, and spent one season with the Houston Texans in 2018. Mathieu turns 30 later this month and is entering his 10th season in the league.
Three-time All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu is expected to sign with the New Orleans Saints, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday.
Beginning in 2018 with the Houston Texans, Mathieu's been part of four consecutive division titlists. Heading into his 10th NFL season, Mathieu adds even more leadership to a veteran-heavy Saints defense. Rapoport adds that the Saints were always the favorite to land Mathieu, who also met virtually with the Eagles.
Tyrann Mathieu, the four-time Pro Bowl free agent safety, has agreed to contract terms with the Saints, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
We have a lot of confidence in K’Von [Wallace] … and we'll continue to look at that position.” We have a lot of confidence in Marcus. Marcus played really good football for us last year. “I think where we are at the safety position – we have a lot of confidence in Anthony,” he said.
With a draft class that includes heavy investment at safety, the door is now unofficially closed on any Tyrann Mathieu reunion in Kansas City.
They also have smart veterans and intriguing prospects vying to round out the depth chart. The Chiefs now have three starting-caliber safeties who are all 25-and-under and should grow with reps and experience together. That sort of significant investment is the same range they picked Thornhill. That doesn’t even include Nazeeh Johnson’s selection in the seventh round as a prospect from Marshall.

“But that’s probably the exception to the rule rather than the rule.” But I’m telling you right now, based off what Dennis Allen has done with this defense, when a quarterback comes to the line of scrimmage, you’re not gonna be able to tell who’s playing free and who’s playing strong. It won’t hurt to inject a bit of fan enthusiasm after the departures of Payton and quarterback Drew Brees, among others, in recent years. The Saints set an NFL record with 58 total starters used during the season because of injuries and COVID-19 issues. And that’s why he’s consistently around the football -- because he sees things so fast, and he is so smart as a veteran player to identify what down and distance, formation, personnel and game situation are telling you. But suddenly, over the course of five days, they have filled their three biggest needs by adding Mathieu and drafting Ohio State receiver Chris Olave and Northern Iowa offensive tackle Trevor Penning in Round 1 of the draft.
