The person was likely killed in the 1980s based on items found in the barrel, Las Vegas police said.

“Most of the body was fully intact, and we have recovered the entire body,” Spencer said. The worsening megadrought is causing water districts to restrict usage. He did not give further details about the person’s identity or how the remains ended up in a barrel at the bottom of Lake Mead. Last month, water levels at Lake Mead dropped so low that an original water valve not seen since 1971 was exposed. “I would say there is a very good chance as the water level drops that we are going to find additional human remains.” The levels are so shallow that a barrel containing skeletal remains was found Sunday immersed in mud, reports KLAS-TV in Las Vegas.

It points to water conservation efforts that it says since 2002 have cut regional consumption of Colorado River water by 26% while the area population has increased 49%. “Without the third intake, Southern Nevada would be shutting its doors,” said Pat Mulroy, former longtime chief of the Las Vegas-based water authority, who is now a consultant. Drilling began in 2014, amid projections that the lake level would continue to fall due to drought. On Friday, the level was 1,055 feet (321.6 meters) _ about 30% full. The water is not there,” Metropolitan Water District of Southern California spokesperson Rebecca Kimitch said this week. “While this emphasizes the seriousness of the drought conditions, we have been preparing for this for more than a decade,” said Bronson Mack, water authority spokesman.

It's really odd in the sense that had the lake never receded, we would never have discovered the body,” a police lieutenant in Las Vegas said, ...

Witnesses called the National Park Service, which responded and confirmed that the contents inside were in fact human remains, Lieutenant Spencer said. His shirt and belt were the only thing we could see over his decomposing bones.” Rangers with the National Park Service find one or two bodies at Lake Mead every year, he said, “so it’s not uncommon to work a homicide out at the lake.” It’s clear that the person “died as a result of a homicide,” he said, but he would not share how that was determined. Recent conditions have resulted in more significant water level declines. While the sun shined on nearby boaters floating in the water, they peeked their heads inside and discovered a skeleton.
