The pair performed two Guns N' Roses classics during Underwood's headlining Stagecoach set.

These are musical influences that are all in me and work their way out, and I just decided this time not to get in their way. Of course, most fans know Underwood as a country superstar, but her fandom runs deep in a few different genres. I grew up listening to so many different kinds of music and that is extremely evident in this body of work.

Axl Rose joined Carrie Underwood for duets of two Guns N Roses songs, 'Paradise City' and 'Sweet Child o' Mine,' at the Stagecoach Festival.

The telltale lack of a hug at the end of “Sweet Child” was a tipoff that more was on the way. “Four years ago we had a terrible, terrible set,” TJ Osborne said. And then that was it — no reciprocal Rose-co-fronted version of “Jesus, Take the Wheel” or “How Great Thou Art,” unfortunately, to name two Underwood setlist staples that had already occurred earlier in the set. While Underwood mentioned Judd, the act that preceded her on the main stage, Brothers Osborne, took their tribute a step further. The Stagecoach show was a substantially different one, and not just because of the bucket-list 10-minute cameo by Rose. Gone, of course, were the aerial rope tricks and getting drench while singing in a waterfall. “Did you think we were through?” Underwood bellowed, as her band then broke into a potent and letter-perfect arrangement of the GNR number she’s sung even more often on the road, “Paradise City.”

And she mashed up “Jesus, Take the Wheel” — a bumper sticker in search of a song — with a bit of the Christian hymn “How Great Thou Art” to surprisingly moving affect. Considering how well she sang, you had to wonder if Rose had bitten off more than he could chew by agreeing to join Underwood for two GNR classics near the end of the gig. She found the pathos in the shopworn clichés of “Cry Pretty,” which featured actual fireworks to go along with the metaphorical kind. What’s enabled Underwood to keep connecting even as country music changes around her — beyond the simple spectator-sport pleasure of listening to someone peg a high note, then hold it for ages — is the tricky balance she strikes between earnestness and camp. (Consider that Twain, who headlined Stagecoach in 2017, returned to the desert recently not for Stagecoach but for Coachella, where she appeared with Harry Styles.) The pose makes for dramatic images, as the former “American Idol” winner certainly understands.

Stagecoach 2022: Carrie Underwood and Guns N' Roses vocalist ... (Press-Enterprise)

Country singer Carrie Underwood pulled out all the stops during her third turn headlining the annual Stagecoach Country Music Festival on Saturday night, ...

Earlier in the day on the Palomino Stage, singer-songwriter Cody Jinks put on a high-energy performance, even chugging a beer as his loyal devotees chanted his name. Lee Brice also put on a lively show as the sun set on the festival. She closed with “Before He Cheats” which prompted arguably the loudest audience sing-along ever at this event and capped the tune with even more fireworks than Friday night headliner Thomas Rhett. Since it was so late in her set, numerous fans who were trying to get a head start out of the parking lot stopped in their tracks, threw their hands up in the air and sang along. However, her big moment came when her guitarist started playing “Sweet Child ‘O Mine” by Guns N’ Roses and she brought out GNR vocalist Axl Rose, who wore a pair of pointy cowboy boots. “Don’t you waste it, let’s make the most of it.”

Fittingly, Underwood offered a bit of foreshadowing to her crowd as GN'R's "Welcome to the Jungle" rang out to the Stagecoach audience just prior to her taking the stage for the night. As Ultimate Classic Rock pointed out, Underwood has professed her love of GN'R publicly, telling Jimmy Fallon in a Tonight Show interview in 2020 that she had experienced one of the best nights of her life catching the current lineup perform after wrapping up one of her own tours. From that point on, Rose handled a majority of the song, with Underwood chiming in on the "Where do we go now" portion of the track.

Stagecoach 2022 Day 2 Highlights: Carrie Underwood Welcomes ... (Billboard)

Day two of of Stagecoach on April 30 saw headliner Carrie Underwood welcoming Axl Rose onstage and Brothers Osborne remembering Naomi Judd.

“Thank you for having me back.” He also offered a version of “I Hope You’re Happy Now,” sans his duet partner on the song, Carly Pearce. One of the set’s most tender moments came with “I Drive Your Truck,” as several in the crowd raised cowboy hats and cups in remembrance those they’ve lost. Gesturing to her own summery denim and rhinestone outfit she quipped, “I practice what I preach, people.” She wore a custom denim jacket emblazoned with the word “Carriecoach” across the shoulders as she belted out “Before He Cheats.” So I made a deal and said, ‘If you stop telling lies about me, I won’t tell the truth about you,’ and wrote a song about it,” he said, following it up with “Alcohol You Later.” On Saturday, HARDY followed up “Sold Out” with “Truck” and “Boots,” subtly adjusting the lyrics to, “I went to Stagecoach and got drunk last night.” “This goes out to anybody that’s lost somebody, that’s missing somebody,” before running through “Give Heaven Some Hell.” He gave a shout-out to the United States military and threw his water bottle into the crowd before offering a song that “changed my life forever” — his hit “One Beer.” He paused to challenge the whole crowd to take a drink together and he took a swig from his own beer cup. 8:30 p.m.: “We’re Brothers Osborne and we’re here to f—in party,” TJ Osborne said soon after stepping onto Stagecoach’s Mane Stage. With brother and bandmate John Osborne, the two were undoubtedly guilty of a damn good time, as they sing in their hit “Ain’t My Fault.” The duo rolled into the righteously rollicking “All Night” and from there, party vibes never let up. The lilting “Henry and Sam,” about his two “friends,” a pistol and a rifle. 6:25 p.m.: Meanwhile, over at the Palomino Stage, Americana star Margo Price wielded a tambourine as mightily as a guitar as she offered up songs including “Nowhere Fast” and “Tennessee Song” with a rustic-yet-elegant style that blended elements of country, funk and alt-rock. He ripped through other songs including “Oklahoma City,” “Condemned,” “Something in Orange,” and dedicated “Let You Down” to a fan in the crowd who had a tattoo. He may only have one chart-topper as an artist, but he’s been steadily accumulating a list of hit songs recorded by other artists, from Wallen to Florida Georgia Line. He offered a spiel that he’s done in several of his concerts before offering a rendition of “God’s Country,” a HARDY-penned song that Blake Shelton turned into a hit. it’s God’s country,” before launching into the song and ultimately leading the crowd in a chant of “U.S.A.” His set also offered the fan favorite one-upper “Rednecker Than You,” before closing with “Country as Hell.” He broke out the harmonica for “Travelin’ Man” and closed with “Revival,” letting each of his bandmates take a moment in the spotlight. “I want to make sure that you know that you’re my heroes, too,” she said.
