A U.S. congressional delegation led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised the courage of the Ukrainian people in remarks during a visit to Poland on Sunday.

She added that the delegation brought Zelenskyy "a message of appreciation from the American people for his leadership." Our commitment is to be there for you until the fight is done," Pelosi added. "It's also a war against the world's most vulnerable." "We have to make sure the Ukrainians have what they need to win. Pelosi and a half-dozen U.S. lawmakers met for three hours late Saturday with Zelenskyy and his top aides to get a first-hand assessment of the war effort to date. Poland has received more than 3 million refugees from Ukraine since Russia launched its war on Feb. 24. With the war dragging into its third month, the measure was designed to signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin that U.S. weaponry and other forms of assistance weren't going away. "We are on a frontier of freedom and your fight is a fight for everyone. Her previously unannounced visit came just days after Moscow bombed the Ukrainian capital while the U.N. secretary-general was there. What we have seen in the last two months is their ferocity, their intense pride, their ability to fight and their ability to win if they have the support to do so." "We were proud to convey to him the message of unity from the Congress of the United States, a message of appreciation from the American people for his leadership and admiration for the people of Ukraine for their courage," Pelosi said. "This is a struggle of freedom against tyranny," said Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California. "And in that struggle, Ukraine is on the front lines."

The weapons: Ukraine is making use of weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, provided by the United States and other allies. “We are negotiating,” Lee said at the news conference in Poland. “That’s how democracy works.” Speaking at a news conference in Poland after leaving Ukraine, one of the members of the delegation, Rep. Jason Crow (Colo.), said Sunday that the emphasis of the trip was clear: “Weapons, weapons and weapons,” echoing a recent remark by Ukraine’s foreign minister. They were the first U.S. officials to visit Ukraine since the invasion. Diplomats will begin by making day trips from Poland to Ukraine’s western city of Lviv as a first step in reopening the U.S. Embassy, which was shuttered before the invasion. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson have also made the journey — in addition to the Czech, Polish and Slovenian prime ministers. We’re there for the fight, and you cannot fold to a bully.” A video of the remarks was shared by Zelensky’s office. Despite bipartisan support for Ukraine, some Republicans have said they want to carefully examine the $33 billion figure. In remarks during his unannounced meeting with Zelensky, Johnson said his visit was a show of Britain’s “unwavering support for the people of Ukraine” and pledged further support for the war effort. The lawmakers, in a statement, said Zelensky began the meeting by thanking the Americans for “the substantial assistance that we have provided.” “Let me just speak for myself,” Pelosi said.

The order bearing her name is awarded to women who have achieved significant success in politics and society -- the personification in Ukraine of female strength. That law was originally created to help forces fighting Nazi Germany and reflects the urgency in Congress to support the Ukrainian armed forces. Pelosi, who met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, is the highest-ranking U.S. official to make the trip to the country since Russia invaded.

Pelosi spent “just over three hours on the ground in Kyiv,” according to CNN, before traveling to Poland to meet with President Andrzej Duda and other top officials. “Nothing is going to decrease, everything is going to increase,” Meeks said. Meeting with Zelenskyy, Pelosi told the Ukrainian president, “Our commitment is to be there for you until the fight is done.” As of last month, it also appeared unlikely that President Joe Biden—whom Zelenskyy has requested a visit from—or Vice President Kamala Harris would make a similar trip given the risks. “While other groups of lawmakers plan to travel to nations bordering the conflict like Poland during the upcoming House recess, none planned to travel directly into the active war zone,” according to Politico, which noted that other U.S lawmakers have visited the country in unofficial capacities. Nancy Pelosi paid a publicly unannounced visit to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the weekend and, in doing so, became the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Ukraine since Russia invaded in February. The speaker of the House led an official congressional delegation to the capital of Kyiv on Saturday, the first of its kind since the war broke out.

U.S. President Joe Biden is currently seeking an additional $33 billion in aid to Ukraine and new authority from Congress to seize and sell property linked to wealthy allies of President Vladimir Putin. Pelsi on Friday termed the aid package “historic” and vowed to pass it as soon as possible. “Our commitment is to be there for you until the fight is done,” Pelosi told Zelenskiy in the video. “When we return to the United States, we will do so further informed, deeply inspired and ready to do what is needed to help the Ukrainian people as they defend democracy for their nation and for the world,” Pelosi said. “Our delegation traveled to Kyiv to send an unmistakable and resounding message to the entire world: America stands firmly with Ukraine,” Pelosi said in a statement released by her office on Sunday. President Volodymyr Zelensky showed footage of Pelosi’s visit on his Ukrainian-language Twitter account early Sunday. “Thank you for helping to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state!” he tweeted. U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met Ukraine’s president on Saturday in a previously unannounced visit to Kyiv, telling him that “your fight is a fight for everyone.”

The Mariupol City Council said in a statement on Telegram that, due to security reasons, the evacuation of civilians from other parts of Mariupol was postponed until Monday morning. Saviano Abreu, a spokesman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told The Washington Post on Sunday afternoon that efforts to get people out of the industrial complex were “still on track and ongoing.” The weapons: Ukraine is making use of weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, provided by the United States and other allies. Ukrainian authorities have estimated that at least 20,000 people have been killed and more than 300,000 of the city’s 450,000 residents have fled. Zelensky confirmed Sunday that the first group of more than 100 people from the plant was headed to “Ukrainian-controlled” territory. According to the BBC, the commander of a national guard brigade, Denis Schlega, said at least 500 wounded soldiers and several hundred civilians are inside the plant. We’re going to stay here and continue our mission until the end,” the commander said. She added: “We need to restore the territorial integrity and the sovereignty of our country. New satellite images show numerous buildings flattened at the sprawling complex, which also has a vast underground network of tunnels that have provided shelter to civilians and troops alike. The United Nations confirmed Sunday that an operation to evacuate civilians from the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol was underway. Both Pelosi and Lee, a member of the House Appropriations Committee, said Congress would move forward on the Ukraine security package “soon” but did not specify a timeline. And we owe it to the people who bravely defend our country and to the people who’ve fallen defending our country.”
