Jon Rahm Holds On In Mexico For First Win Since 2021 U.S. Open (Sports Illustrated)

A Sunday 69 was the Spaniard's highest score at the Mexico Open, but he never trailed en route to his seventh PGA Tour win.

The victory moves him a little closer to Scottie Scheffler in his bid to reclaim the No. 1 ranking, and he’ll have a chance to do so at the PGA Championship in three weeks. Instead of waiting for Kitayama and Cameron Champ to finish, Rahm quickly stepped in and closed the deal. He did well to punch that out just over a waste area and into the fairway. His wedge to the 15th came up short and his chip ran 5 by the hole. Well ahead of him, Wu holed a 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole to join him at 16 under. It was a pretty stressful weekend, all the way to the end.”

Golf World Reacts To Jon Rahm's Win On Sunday (The Spun)

The 2022 Mexico Open turned out to be another day at the office for Jon Rahm as he got the win and some momentum for the PGA Championship.

It would be fun to see Rahm and Scheffler go head-to-head with a major on the line. The 2021 PGA Tour season saw Jon Rahm finish as the top earner on the tour. His 27th-place finish at the Masters last month was his worst finish at any major since 2019.

2022 Mexico Open leaderboard, grades: Jon Rahm goes wire-to ... (CBSSports.com)

Rahm found himself back in the win column on Sunday after a sensational performance at Vidanta Vallarta.

After converting an eagle opportunity from just inside 60 feet on the par-5 14th, Tony Finau backed it up with yet another par breaker on the following hole. Unable to take advantage of the easy par-5 18th, Brandon Wu settled for a final round of 8 under 63. They will wait anxiously, but with Rahm's birdie on the par-5 14th, the duo will likely come up short as the lead has been pushed to 17 under. The one remaining shot which could have tripped him up, Jon Rahm has found the putting surface with his tee shot on the dangerous par-3 17th. Still not quite on the putting surface, he lied three just off and was able to get up and down for his seventh title on the PGA Tour. Leading wire-to-wire, this has been a long time coming as Rahm had gone 11 months without a victory worldwide. "They say in Spain that kids come with a present under their arm and the second one has already given me the present. That is what we saw the first two days in Mexico, and even though he played his final 36 holes in 3 over and fell off the eventual pace, his name was on the leaderboard over the weekend. From his comments at The American Express to his responses to questions about his putting woes, a weight has now been lifted from his shoulders. Rahm has a long way to go in terms of sharpness with his short game, but in between the ears, he may be closer than it appears. Tiger Woods was the best to ever do this, and while I am surely not comparing the two, leading wire-to-wire without his best stuff makes Rahm's seventh title on the PGA Tour all the more impressive. Major season is all about peaking -- you hear players talk about it ad nauseum -- and most of the time we assume they mean physically, honing in on various aspects of their games or practicing specific shots needed for a major championship test. It wasn't pretty at times, as Rahm let numerous chances fall by the wayside, but the accomplishment of victory is nevertheless encouraging.

Jon Rahm was a beast off the tee with his Callaway driver, allowing him to win the Mexico Open in wire-to-wire fashion.

Still, the outcome was iffy until Rahm provided some breathing room with an 11-footer for birdie on the par-5 14th with his Odyssey White Hot OG Rossie S that he first put into play last season. For Rahm that meant going to the company’s new Rogue ST Triple Diamond LS driver—a very low-spin club—with 10.5 degrees of loft and an Aldila Tour Green 75 TX shaft, which is a bit on the heavy side for PGA Tour players. Though Rahm didn't exactly coast to his first victory of the season, he grabbed a one-shot win over Kurt Kitayama, Tony Finau and Brandon Wu for his first title since the U.S. Open last year at Torrey Pines.

Mexico Open: Jon Rahm holds on to claim one-shot victory and ... (Sky Sports)

The 27-year-old Spaniard held off late charges from American duo Tony Finau and Brandon Wu to finish on 17-under 267 and claim his seventh PGA Tour title.

A couple of those great par putts early on helped out a lot and the one putt from outside five feet that finally went in on 14 was a huge booster." It wasn't my best putting weekend but I stayed aggressive and I think the shot on 17 showed that. Finau also put himself in the mix when he followed up an eagle at the 14th, holing a 56-foot putt from off the front of the green, with a birdie at the next to get to 15 under, but he then missed birdie chances at the next two holes.

Jon Rahm hangs on to win Mexico Open for first victory since U.S. ... (ESPN)

Jon Rahm pulled out of a four-way tie on Sunday for a one-shot victory in the Mexico Open, his first win since the U.S. Open last summer.

The victory moves him a little closer to Scottie Scheffler in his bid to reclaim the No. 1 ranking, and he'll have another opportunity at the PGA Championship in three weeks. Instead of waiting for Kitayama and Cameron Champ to finish, Rahm quickly stepped in and closed the deal. And then Finau went birdie-eagle-birdie to get in the mix and capped off his 63 with a birdie to make it a four-way tie. He did well to punch that out just over a waste area and into the fairway. The relief and satisfaction was evident when he tapped in for par on the final hole at Vidanta Vallarta for a one-shot victory. Kitayama, playing in the final group with Rahm, got up and down from right of the green on the par-5 12th to tie.

Jon Rahm leads from start to finish to win Mexico Open (Golf.com)

Jon Rahm shoots a two-under 69 to win the Mexico Open by one shot. It's his first victory since last year's U.S. Open.

Rahm, Kitayama, Wu and Finau are at 16-under, Riley is at 15-under, and Champ, Wise and David Lipsky are at 14-under. — Kitayama birdies the 661-yard, par-5 12th after hitting his third shot, from just right of the green, to 4 feet, and he moves into a share of the lead. — Wu birdies the 470-yard, par-4 16th — he’s seven-under for the day — and he moves into a share of the lead. Rahm hits his drive left and toward the penalty area, but it hits a cart and bounces back toward the fairway — but he doesn’t hit the green with his second shot and he bogeys the hole. — Rahm birdies the 302-yard, par-4 7th on a 7-foot putt, and he maintains his one-shot lead. — Rahm birdies the 584-yard, par-5 6th after hitting the green in two — his first birdie of the day — and through six holes, he leads by one.

Laser-focused Jon Rahm enjoys family victory at Mexico Open at ... (pgatour.com)

VIDANTA VALLARTA, Mexico – Inside the ropes, Jon Rahm maintains a laser focus.

Inside the ropes, Rahm doesn’t waver from the desire to extract as much from his game as he possibly can. It can be lonely out here, so for him to have that, it’s a benefit.”Jon Rahm celebrates his Mexico Open victory with his wife Kelley and son Kepa. (Macarena Marañón/PGA TOUR) Yes, I might let some anger out and I might say some things, but I’m always hopeful and I’m always positive. I know I have my good qualities, but she’s a heck of a person. I think it’s so cool that he’s getting this experience at this point in his career. “He’s very good at separating work and the personal life,” said Hayes, a veteran caddie who has worked alongside Rahm since 2016. For him to be in the prime of his career and continue to be in his prime, and to be able to share that with his wife and kids, is going to be really cool.” At Torrey Pines, Kepa was just 2 months old and spent most of the post-victory celebration in his mom’s arms. Rahm is known as one of the game’s foremost competitors. Several players wait to have families until their careers have moved well past the peak stage. Perhaps the only factor that can provide a crack in Rahm’s competitive armor is family. “I could only think, ‘I’d better two-putt this to make sure we can enjoy this moment.’”
