Clutch catch against Pitt in the bowl game. He can – and should – be moved around the formation and offenses need to take advantage of his versatility to wear lots of hats. At the Senior Bowl, he largely worked as a fullback and that’s the best home for him. He’ll be a versatile option, primarily working as a fullback but capable of moving around the offense. Heyward is about the least surprising pick the Steelers could’ve made. The team is officially announcing him as a FB.

The Steelers addressed gaps in their offensive line and linebacker groups in free agency but should look towards the draft to add depth to positions that have been plagued by injury in recent years. Pittsburgh lost other core veterans to free agency, including wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster to the Chiefs. It remains to be seen if cornerback Joe Haden and safety Terrell Edmunds will return to the team. Pittsburgh used its 24th overall pick in last year’s draft on running back Najee Harris out of Alabama. The rookie racked up over 1,600 total yards on a league-high 381 touches.

For the past three months, Colbert had maintained a calm and steady demeanor every time he was asked about retirement and preparing for his final draft. “And he’s just the latest.” Once again, the Steelers proved they like to keep it all in the family when they used their sixth-round pick to select Michigan State fullback/tight end Connor Heyward, the younger brother of their All-Pro defensive end. It will be a resounding success if Pickett can add to the trophies that sit not far away. ... There were four when we got here and you knew the task,” he said, taking a deep breath and pausing even longer. Austin, who is 5-foot-8, 170 pounds, has the complete opposite build of the receiver the Steelers drafted on the second round, George Pickens (6-4, 197). “You think about DMR,” he started again, a reference to late Steelers chairman Dan Rooney, who hired Colbert, a North Side native, to replace Tom Donahoe. “And being able to add to that room means a lot.

Pittsburgh is hoping that Stephon Tuitt returns after he missed the entire 2021 season. Pickens enjoyed a breakout freshman season at Georgia. During the 2019 season, Pickens caught 49 passes for 727 yards and eight touchdowns. Leal filled the stat sheet during his final season with the Aggies. Last fall, Leal racked up 8.5 sacks to go with 12.5 tackles for loss. Knows how to beat press at the line and has the length/quicks combination to become outstanding in that area eventually. Despite the injury, Pickens returned for the end of the Bulldogs' 2021 season. During his final season at Pitt, Pickett also threw for a school record 4,319 yards while completing 67.2% of his passes. Pickett will look to develop a quick rapport with his new teammates in Pittsburgh that includes receivers Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool, running back Najee Harris and tight end Pat Freiermuth. That receiving corps will also include Pickens, who caught 14 touchdowns during his first two seasons with the Bulldogs. Pittsburgh ended Day Two of the draft by adding a young force to their defensive line in Leal, who racked up 8.5 sacks last season. While he doesn't have an elite arm, he showed throughout the season that he has the ability to throw deep outs, and the ball had both velocity and accuracy. Pickett announced himself on the college scene after leading the Panthers to a shocking upset win over second-ranked Miami during his freshman season.

4 biggest Steelers takeaways from days 1 and 2 of the NFL Draft (Still Curtain)

The Steelers were sending a message with their draft picks on the first two days of the draft. Here is what they were telling us.

Granted, there will be a QB competition; however, It’s not like the Steelers will be trying to swing a trade for Aaron Rodgers at this point. The Steelers already addressed the offensive line via free agency. With Chase Claypool or Diontae Johnson likely moving to the slot, Pittsburgh drafted an X-receiver in George Pickens to free up Claypool or Johnson to move to the inside.

Derek Watt played only 6% and 7%, respectively, of the Steelers’ offensive snaps the past two seasons. The Steelers have two assured tight ends in Pat Freiermuth and Zach Gentry, along with a No. 3 in strong blocker Kevin Rader. The addition of Connor Heyward could make Watt expendable, especially in light of the $4.7 million salary-cap hit he’s due. Cameron Heyward and T.J. Watt were All Pros this past season, with outside linebacker Watt winning the NFL’s defensive player of the year award. Heyward is the younger brother of Steelers All-Pro defensive lineman Cameron Heyward. His role evolved to the point he is considered an H-back or fullback-type tight end who can be a special-teamer and versatile chess piece on offense.

The Steelers selected tight end Connor Heyward with the No. 208 overall pick in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft on Saturday.

Connor plays with a fierceness of a Steeler. The tight end owns strong hands and barrels through contact. The Steelers now boast four sets of brothers, with two Heywards, two Watts (T.J. and Derek), two Edmunds (Terrell and Trey) and two Davises (Carolos and Khalil). The two are sons of the late Craig "Ironhead" Heyward, a former NFL fullback who played for the Saints, Bears, Falcons, Rams and Colts from 1988-1998.

It’s hard not to love what the Steelers did, adding a quarterback who can someday be the face of the franchise, if not right away while adding weapons to help him grow and develop chemistry with. Leal can learn on the job while not being expected to fill a major role right away. Pickett was described as the most pro-ready QB in the draft class and even if the Steelers are sold on Mitch Trubisky, you can’t blame them for taking a chance on another prospect with sky-high potential. Over the years the Steelers have done a great job of identifying lesser-known players, fitting them into their defensive front, and watching them thrive. Tuitt at 28, is the youngest of the group, while Heyward (33) and Alualu (34) aren’t getting any younger. That’s not what happened at all, with Pitt’s Kenny Pickett lasting all the way until the Steelers were on the board.

Kevin Colbert ends final Steelers draft by doubling up at QB, WR ... (TribLIVE)

Kevin Colbert didn't get emotional in the war room as he was preparing to make the final pick of his 23rd NFL Draft with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“It’s been 38 years we’ve been doing this,” Colbert said. With his final draft concluded, Colbert was looking forward to heading home to wife Janis and “see where life goes.” “You’ve got to keep bringing youth,” Colbert said. “Only time will tell.” “I’ve enjoyed every moment of it, and I don’t know what is next. The Steelers also took a step toward restocking an aging defensive line by taking the 6-4, 283-pound Leal in the third round. The absence of players drafted at those positions was offset by moves made in free agency. We’ll never lose sight of that, but it means a lot.” “The last pick, we hope it’s the best pick,” Colbert said. Colbert is taking a similar approach with his future as he hopes to remain with the Steelers in a reduced capacity. “You think about DMR,” Colbert said, referring to the late Dan Rooney. “Being able to add to that room means a ton, but that doesn’t mean it’s over. “It’s not in his DNA,” Tomlin said.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected Memphis WR Calvin Austin with their 4th Round pick in the 2022 draft.

Austin’s ability to work all three levels of the field and handle punt-return duties increases his odds of becoming a Day 3 pick. He has the rapid-fire foot quickness and loose hips to take on a more complex route tree as an NFL slot target. He has proven he can handle the catch-and-run duties necessary in Memphis’ quick game. There have been numerous thoughts and debates regarding what the team will do in Round 1 of the NFL Draft. With their first pick on Day 2, the Steelers took George Pickens, wide receiver from Georgia, which took the pass catcher off the team need list.
